Codebook | EMOTIONS Project – S2W1 | 2 EMOTIONS PROJECT OVERVIEW Study 1 Study 2 Wave 1: S1W1 Wave 2: S1W2 Wave 1: S2W1 Wave 2: S2W2 Wave 1: S1W1 T1 ESM T2 T3 ESM T4 T1 ESM T2 T3 ESM T4 Note. Date format: DD/MM/YYYY, S1W1 = Study 1 Wave 1 (all other study waves are abbreviated analogously). S2W1 TIMELINE Note. ESM report = completed ESM (i.e., state) survey, S2W1 = Study 2 Wave 1. NOTES ON THE DATA SETS The trait data set of S2W1 subsumes trait measures administered in S2W1 only. Thus, each row corresponds to a unique participant. The state data set of S2W1 subsumes state and trait measures administered in S2W1. Thus, data is provided in long format (i.e., with one row of data per ESM report). We excluded data from the trait and state data set in the cases of (a) disagreement with conditions of participation, (b) missing data on all relevant variables, (c) participants under minimum required age, (d) test users, (e) duplicates. Moreover, we applied two additional exclusion criteria uniquely to the state data set, namely (f) incomplete state surveys and (g) state surveys completed too close to each other. For details on data exclusion, please refer to Section 2.4.2 of our data paper (Ryvkina et al., 20221). Moreover, from the trait and state data set shared on OSF, we removed the following variables for the sake of data anonymization: code, gender, gender_specification, age, higher_ed_semester, higher_ed_field. However, except for code, all excluded variables can be explicitly requested. 1 Ryvkina, E., Kroencke, L., Geukes, K., Scharbert, J., & Back, M. D. (2022). Dear participant, Welcome to the EMOTIONS-C study! Thank you very much for choosing to participate. We are currently in a challenging societal situation due to the coronavirus outbreak (Covid-19). However, this situation also offers a unique opportunity for research to gain new insights into the behavior and emotional well-being in times of crisis. Therefore, we cordially invite you to participate in the EMOTIONS-C study. The study seeks to gain a better understanding of human behavior and emotional well-being during the coronavirus pandemic. With your participation, you enable important insights into the coronavirus outbreak and the associated social and emotional consequences. Our aim is to work with you to make a scientific contribution to the successful management of this and similar crisis situations. The EMOTIONS-C study consists of two parts: In the first part of the study, you will be asked to complete a longer questionnaire that asks you to make some evaluations of the coronavirus pandemic and of yourself as a person. In the second part of the study, you will be asked to complete a short questionnaire (approx. 2 minutes) about your emotional well-being and your social interactions via smartphone (email) six times a day for two weeks. At the end of May, you will receive comprehensive feedback on your behavior and emotional well-being during the coronavirus crisis. We appreciate your interest and your support.
Once again, thank you for your participation in the EMOTIONS-C study over the last two weeks! To complete the study, we will ask you to answer a number of general questions about your experiences during the period of the coronavirus outbreak as well as general questions about attitudes and selfdescriptions. Please answer all of these questions as well, once again with full concentration. This will help us to obtain complete and meaningful data sets that will enable us to gain optimal insights into the coronavirus outbreak as well as into social interactions, emotions, and managing crises in everyday life. Your EMOTIONS-C Team DATA QUALITY CONTROL In addition to data exclusion, we performed data quality checks to scrutinize the trait and state data set for conspicuous responding. In particular, we identified outliers9 on various data quality metrics, namely intraindividual response variability (IRV), longstring, trait and state survey completion time, and responses to variables with open answer format. The variables associated with each data quality check (e.g., the data quality metric itself and a variable flagging outliers on the respective data quality metric) are listed in the following.
