Minimum selling prices of lyocell staple fiber from blends of wood pulp and second-gen agriculture feedstocks. Mapping pathways for upscaling the production of lyocell fibers using second-gen feedstocks Tooba I. Qureshi, Luana Dessbesell Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems, Aalto University, FI-00076 Aalto, Espoo, Finland. Introduction Results Conclusions Goal: to identify the potential of agriculture second-generation feedstocks for lyocell staple fiber production. Price assumptions (EUR/ton): - Wood dissolving pulp: 916 +\- 50% - Oat husk dissolving pulp: 1354 +\- 50% - Wheat straw dissolving pulp: 663 +\- 50% - Hemp pulp (market price): 2212 +\- 50% - Risk assessments at early stages support strategic planning which influences economic feasibility and upscaling. - Lyocell from second-gen feedstocks presents similar order of magnitude MSP of wood. - Wheat straw appears to be the most promising second gen. feedstock assuming blending is technically feasible. Next Steps: Detailed TEA and process modelling utilizing Aspen to study the effects on mass and energy balances comprehensively and support industrial scale setup. Risk assessment with stakeholders from various parts of the value chain. Goal and Scope [1-12] [13-22] Gap: Wood dissolving pulp price has a major contribution to the production cost of lyocell fibers. There is a lack of feasibility studies to assess the potential of alternative feedstocks. Preliminary top 3 technical and market risks from a lyocell producer perspective. Estimated available feedstock volume in Europe (million tonnes) Minimum selling price sensitivity for selected second-gen feedstocks alternatives to wood.
