THE ROLE AND EFFECTIVENESS OF CLIL IN THE WORLD AND IN UZBEKISTAN

Vasila Mavlonberdiyeva

Abstract

This paper investigates the pedagogical approach of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), its global applications, and the potential for implementation in Uzbekistan. Through literature review, document analysis, and reflective practice, the study examines how teacher training, teaching materials, and classroom practices influence the effectiveness of CLIL. Findings indicate that while CLIL can significantly enhance learner motivation, improve content knowledge, and foster language competence worldwide, its successful adoption in Uzbekistan depends on context‑sensitive materials, teacher preparedness, and gradual implementation.

ILM FAN YANGILIKLARI KONFERENSIYASI OKTABR ANDIJON,2025 242 THE ROLE AND EFFECTIVENESS OF CLIL IN THE WORLD AND IN UZBEKISTAN Vasila Mavlonberdiyeva Foreign language expert at the Agency for Assessment of Knowledge and Competences Email: [email protected] Abstract. Keywords: CLIL; Soft CLIL; Teacher Training; Teaching Materials; Uzbekistan; Effectiveness; ELT Introduction Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is an educational approach where subject content is taught through a foreign language. Globally, CLIL has gained prominence in English language teaching (Coyle, Hood, & Marsh, 2010). In Europe and Asia, it is widely applied as an innovative methodology that simultaneously enhances both language skills and subject knowledge. In Uzbekistan, reforms in education highlight the importance of English; however, CLIL practices remain underexplored and underutilized (Hussain, 2022). This paper aims to analyze the global role of CLIL, its effectiveness, and the opportunities and challenges for introducing CLIL—especially Soft CLIL—into secondary schools in Uzbekistan. Methods The methodology of this paper is based on a literature review and reflective practice. Key scholarly works and online resources on CLIL (British Council, ResearchGate, OUP, Cambridge, ERIC, HAL) were reviewed. Document analysis of Uzbek educational policy and curriculum was also conducted. Additionally, the author’s personal teaching experience in Yangiyer city, where geography, history, and biology topics were taught in English to 7th graders, was used as a reflective case study to illustrate the motivational effect of CLIL. Results The literature review indicates three major findings: 1. Teacher Training: CLIL implementation depends heavily on teacher preparedness. Hussain (2022) found that in‑service and on‑the‑job training contribute positively, though formal training modules are still lacking. 2. Teaching Materials: In many global contexts, high‑quality, authentic CLIL materials exist, while Uzbekistan has a shortage of localized CLIL resources (Cambridge, 2010; OUP, 2020). 3. Effectiveness: CLIL has been shown to improve learner motivation, vocabulary acquisition, and subject knowledge. However, teacher experience alone does not significantly determine CLIL’s success (Hussain, 2022). Discussion The global findings confirm that CLIL is most effective when supported by professional development, contextualized materials, and alignment with curricula. In Uzbekistan, the same principles apply, but there are specific challenges: a lack of CLIL‑trained teachers, absence of Uzbek‑context teaching resources, and initial resistance to new methods. Soft CLIL, which ILM FAN YANGILIKLARI KONFERENSIYASI OKTABR ANDIJON,2025 243 integrates language with selected subject content, is considered a more feasible entry point for Uzbek schools. Reflective experience from Yangiyer shows that when geography, history, and biology topics were taught in English, students were highly engaged and motivated, asking questions and demonstrating improved subject vocabulary. This practical evidence aligns with international research suggesting that CLIL raises learner curiosity and confidence. Conclusion CLIL has demonstrated strong evidence worldwide for enhancing language learning and content knowledge. Uzbekistan can benefit from implementing Soft CLIL in secondary schools, particularly at grades 5–7, as a gradual and realistic approach. The success of CLIL in Uzbekistan depends on targeted teacher training, development of localized CLIL materials, and supportive educational policy. Future research should focus on experimental studies in Uzbek schools to measure student outcomes and teacher perceptions in the long term. References: 1. British Council. (n.d.).
