Abstract
This article examines the linguopragmatic characteristics of emojis and memes in digital discourse, focusing on English and Uzbek online communication. The study analyzes how visual and verbal elements in emojis and memes function as pragmatic markers, conveying emotions, irony, and cultural values. Comparative analysis reveals that English and Uzbek users employ emojis and memes differently to express politeness, humor, and social stance. The research concludes that emojis and memes are not only expressive tools but also linguistic signs that reflect sociocultural identity and digital etiquette.

In modern digital platforms, users rely on emojis to express emotional attitudes and on memes to create humor and social commentary [1]. The rise of these semiotic tools demonstrates how language adapts to technological contexts and new forms of interpersonal communication.

However, cultural and linguistic factors influence how these symbols are interpreted. Therefore, analyzing their linguopragmatic functions comparatively provides valuable insights into intercultural digital communication. LITERATURE REVIEW Scholars such as Dresner and Herring (2010) note that emojis serve pragmatic functions similar to gestures in spoken discourse, marking emotional stance and discourse relations [2]. Memes, according to Shifman (2014), represent cultural units that spread humor, ideology, and shared identity in online communities [3]. In the Uzbek context, researchers (Karimova, 2021; Rakhimova, 2022) emphasize the growing influence of social media on linguistic creativity and pragmatic strategies, including emoji-based politeness and meme humor [4][5]. Comparative studies (Derks et al., 2008; Alshenqeeti, 2016) show that English users tend to employ emojis for emotional clarification, while users of Eastern cultures, including Uzbek speakers, often use them to soften requests or maintain group harmony [6][7]. The linguopragmatic approach, rooted in Leech’s theory of politeness (1983) and Grice’s cooperative principle (1975), offers an analytical framework for understanding how emojis and memes serve pragmatic goals beyond literal meaning [8][9]. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION 1. Linguopragmatic Functions of Emojis In both English and Uzbek digital discourse, emojis serve as substitutes for paralinguistic cues (tone, gesture, facial expression). Their main pragmatic functions include: Emotional expression: can be represent positive or negative emotions. Irony and sarcasm: can alter the literal meaning of text, signaling humor. Politeness: Uzbek users often add soften requests (e.g., “Jo‘natsangiz, iltimos”), whereas English users prefer “please” or “thanks” for the same purpose. Table 1. Memes as Pragmatic and Cultural Texts Memes blend linguistic, visual, and cultural codes. Their humor relies on shared background knowledge. For instance, the English meme “Keep calm and carry on” evolved into global templates (e.g., “Keep calm and study hard”), while Uzbek equivalents often use local idioms: “Sabir qil, hammasi o‘tadi”. Memes in English discourse often convey individual irony, while in Uzbek discourse, they reflect collective humor and moral commentary. Example comparison: English meme: “When Wi-Fi drops during a meeting ” — expresses frustration with modern dependency. Uzbek meme: “Internet ketdi, hayot to‘xtadi ” — adds national humor reflecting similar digital habits. 3. Cultural and Pragmatic Differences English digital discourse emphasizes individual expressiveness and sarcastic humor. Uzbek discourse prioritizes group harmony, respect, and empathic expression. These tendencies show that digital symbols mirror sociocultural norms embedded in each linguistic community. Comparing the two cultures, we can see that both English and Uzbek users employ emojis and memes to express emotions and attitudes, but their purposes differ slightly. English digital discourse tends to be more direct and individualistic, using humor and irony as social tools. Uzbek users, however, often prioritize politeness, emotional warmth, and collective values when communicating online. This shows that digital communication is not only about technology — it also mirrors the deeper cultural norms of each society. CONCLUSION The comparative analysis of emojis and memes in English and Uzbek digital discourse demonstrates that these semiotic elements function as linguopragmatic tools that enrich online communication. They carry emotional, interpersonal, and cultural meanings beyond their visual form. Emojis act as digital gestures, while memes serve as vehicles of cultural humor and collective identity. The study concludes that understanding their use enhances intercultural digital literacy and pragmatic competence. Future research should focus on corpus-based analysis of social media
