Introduction. The Turkic world is endowed with a rich and diverse cultural heritage, one of its most prominent layers being decorative-applied art. Crafts such as ornamentation, carpet weaving, wood carving, ceramics, metalwork, miniature painting, and calligraphy have historically played a crucial role in the everyday life, worldview, and traditions of Turkic peoples. The applied arts of the Uzbek people constitute an integral part of the cultural heritage of the Turkic world. For centuries, they have been one of the leading branches of Eastern artistic schools. The establishment of the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan in 1997 marked a new stage in the systematic study, preservation, and promotion of national and Turkic decorative-applied art. This article examines the activities of the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan between 1997 and 2024, analyzing its contributions in education, scientific research, international cooperation, and exhibition practices. Historical Background and Formation (1997–2000). The Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan was established on January 23, 1997, by a Presidential Decree. This decision was a logical continuation of the post-independence policy aimed at reviving and developing national cultural values. In its early years, the Academy focused on supporting masters of applied art and creating conditions for their creative work. Traditional schools of craft were revived, including the Bukhara jewelry school, the Rishtan ceramics school, the Khiva woodcarving school, and the Samarkand miniature school. Between 1998 and 1999, exhibitions of decorative-applied art were organized in Tashkent and various regions, many of which showcased the unity and common features of Turkic traditions. Expansion of Activities and International Relations (2000–2010). From the early 2000s, the Academy expanded its international cooperation: • Joint exhibitions with TURKSOY were held in Tashkent, Baku, Astana, and Ankara, dedicated to the art of Turkic peoples. • Uzbek artists actively participated in international symposiums and exhibitions under the theme “Artistic Heritage of the Turkic World.” • Research directions specifically focused on applied art were established within the Academy. During this period, the works of Uzbek masters such as S. Rakhimov (ceramics), A. Haqqulov (jewelry), and H. Boltaboyev (wood carving) gained international recognition and were presented as an essential part of the shared artistic heritage of the Turkic world. Research, Education, and Museum Policy (2010–2020). The 2010s marked significant development in scientific research and education within the Academy: • The Kamoliddin Behzod National Institute of Arts and Design and other affiliated institutions trained a new generation of specialists in the fields of fine and applied arts. • Academic councils were established to develop postgraduate and doctoral studies in the field of art history.
SCIENTIFIC AND THEORETICAL CONFERENCE “DECORATIVE AND APPLIED ART OF THE TURKIC WORLD: HISTORY, MODERNITY, AND FUTURE PROSPECTS”, OCTOBER 23, 2025 169 • Monographs, catalogues, and albums dedicated to “Uzbek Artistic Heritage” and “Applied Arts of the Turkic Peoples” were published. • In 2017, the exhibition activities of the Academy expanded with the active role of the Gallery of Fine Arts of Uzbekistan and regional museums. These activities not only promoted national traditions but also highlighted common elements within the artistic culture of the Turkic world. Contemporary Stage and Future Perspectives (2020–2024). In recent years, several new directions have emerged in the Academy’s activities: • Digital technologies: electronic catalogues of Turkic decorative-applied art are being developed. • Online exhibitions: during the pandemic years of 2021–2023, several international online exhibitions were organized. • Youth creativity: “Creative Schools” were established to support young artists and craftsmen. • International forums: in 2022, Tashkent hosted the “Turkic World: Art and Cultural Heritage” forum, where the Academy acted as one of the initiators. Future perspectives include: • Organizing joint biennales and festivals with Turkic countries; • Establishing a unified electronic database of Turkic decorative-applied art; • Expanding interdisciplinary scientific research; • Increasing Uzbekistan’s role as a cultural hub of the Turkic world. Conclusion. Since its establishment in 1997, the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan has played a leading role in both developing national art and presenting it as an integral part of the cultural heritage of the Turkic world. The different stages of its activities — formation, expansion, research, and modernization — have significantly contributed to the evolution of Turkic decorative-applied art. Today, the Academy continues to combine heritage preservation with international cooperation and youth education, creating a strong foundation for the future of Turkic art and ensuring that its traditions remain alive and inspiring for generations to come.
