Original article 1199 that students taught through blended learning tend to demonstrate higher motivation and better academic outcomes than those in fully traditional settings. According to the U.S. Department of Education (2020), learners in blended environments performed better, on average, than those receiving only face-to-face instruction, with an effect size of +0.35. In grammar instruction, where repetition, practice, and real-time feedback are essential, blended learning platforms offer students increased autonomy and control over their pace of learning. It also allows for the incorporation of multimedia materials—such as quizzes, animations, and grammar games—that can simplify difficult concepts and reinforce understanding. The importance of learner autonomy has become increasingly evident in modern education, especially in language learning. As Little (1991) stated, autonomy is not only a condition for effective learning but also a goal in itself. By allowing learners to take responsibility for their learning process—through online modules, selfassessments, and interactive resources—blended grammar teaching encourages independent thinking and long-term skill development. This article aims to explore the impact of the blended learning approach on teaching English grammar, focusing particularly on how it enhances student autonomy and performance. The study will analyze classroom-based practices, evaluate learner engagement, and provide insights into the practical benefits and challenges of implementing blended learning in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) grammar instruction. LITERATURE REVIEW The implementation of blended learning in language education has gained momentum due to its ability to merge the advantages of both traditional and digital learning environments. Scholars have investigated its role in enhancing grammar acquisition, promoting learner autonomy, and improving overall academic performance. Graham (2006) defines blended learning as “the combination of face-to-face instruction with computer-mediated instruction,” a definition that has been widely accepted in pedagogical research. This dual-mode format enables more interactive, individualized learning experiences that can cater to the specific needs of EFL learners [1]. Several studies emphasize the benefits of blended learning in improving grammar instruction. According to Al-Jarf (2005), students in blended English grammar classes outperformed their peers in conventional classes due to greater engagement and accessibility to resources outside the classroom [2]. Similarly, Alemi and Sadeghi (2014) found that blended learning environments led to more accurate grammar usage in both writing and speaking tasks, highlighting the approach’s effectiveness in both comprehension and application [3]. Learner autonomy has also been closely linked to the blended learning model. Benson (2001) points out that learners benefit when they have control over the content, pace, and style of learning, which is often facilitated through digital platforms [4]. In the context of grammar teaching, digital modules enable students to revisit complex topics and engage in self-paced practice, fostering a deeper understanding of grammatical structures. Moreover, Dziuban, Moskal, and Hartman (2018) argue that blended learning supports diverse learning preferences and fosters a more student-centered environment [5]. The incorporation of visual and auditory materials such as grammar tutorials, interactive quizzes, and collaborative tasks increases student motivation and active participation, both of which are critical for mastering grammatical rules. Despite these advantages, challenges persist in implementing blended learning. Issues such as digital literacy gaps, lack of institutional support, and student resistance to new learning models have been reported (Vaughan, 2010) [6]. However, with proper guidance and resources, these barriers can be effectively addressed. In sum, existing literature confirms that the blended learning approach not only enhances grammar instruction but also promotes greater student autonomy and engagement. These findings serve as a foundation

Original article 1200 for the current study, which seeks to examine the practical application of blended learning in an EFL grammar classroom and assess its impact on learner performance and independence. METHODOLOGY This study adopted a qualitative and quantitative mixed-methods design to explore the impact of the blended learning approach on students’ grammar performance and autonomy in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) settings. The research was conducted at a university in Uzbekistan where English grammar is a core component of the foreign language curriculum. A total of 60 first-year undergraduate students participated in the study. They were divided into two groups: an experimental group (30 students) that received grammar instruction through a blended learning format, and a control group (30 students) that received traditional face-to-face instruction only. Both groups were taught the same grammar topics over a 6-week period, covering areas such as verb tenses, conditional sentences, and passive voice. The blended learning model used for the experimental group combined in-class grammar lessons with online learning components through Google Classroom. Digital materials included video explanations, interactive grammar exercises, self-assessment quizzes, and peer discussion forums. Students were encouraged to complete tasks independently and reflect on their learning process. To assess grammar proficiency, both groups completed pre-tests and post-tests designed to evaluate their understanding and application of grammar rules. Additionally, a learner autonomy questionnaire was administered before and after the instruction period to measure changes in students’ ability to manage their own learning. Interviews with a sample of 10 students from the experimental group were also conducted to gain deeper insights into their experiences with blended learning. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software. Descriptive statistics and paired sample t-tests were used to determine any significant differences in grammar performance between preand post-test scores. Responses from the autonomy questionnaire were analyzed for patterns, and interview transcripts were thematically coded. This methodological approach provided a comprehensive understanding of how blended learning affects grammar learning outcomes and the development of learner autonomy in the EFL context. RESULTS The data analysis revealed that the blended learning approach had a positive impact on both students' grammar performance and their level of autonomy in learning English. First, the grammar test results showed a significant improvement in the experimental group's performance from the pre-test to the post-test. The average pre-test score for the experimental group was 61.3%, which increased to 83.7% in the post-test. In contrast, the control group showed a smaller improvement, with pre-test and post-test averages of 62.1% and 71.4%, respectively. A paired sample t-test indicated that the improvement in the experimental group was statistically significant (p < 0.01), suggesting that the blended learning model contributed more effectively to grammar acquisition than traditional methods. In terms of learner autonomy, the questionnaire results demonstrated noticeable progress in the experimental group. Before the intervention, students reported low to moderate levels of self-directed learning skills, with many relying heavily on teacher instructions. After six weeks of blended instruction, students displayed increased confidence in managing their learning, setting personal goals, and using digital resources independently. The mean autonomy score for the experimental group rose from 2.8 to 4.1 on a 5-point Likert scale, while the control group's increase was minimal (from 2.9 to 3.2). Qualitative data gathered from student interviews further supported the quantitative findings. Most interviewees stated that the blended format allowed them to review grammar materials at

Some students emphasized the usefulness of digital tools and the flexibility of the online components, which encouraged them to take more responsibility for their learning. One student shared, “I used to wait for the teacher to explain everything, but now I try to solve grammar problems by myself first.” In summary, the results suggest that implementing a blended learning approach in teaching English grammar not only improves academic performance but also fosters greater learner autonomy, a key component in successful language acquisition. DISCUSSION The findings of this study affirm the growing body of literature supporting the effectiveness of blended learning in English language education. The significant improvement in grammar performance among the experimental group indicates that blending face-to-face instruction with digital resources provides learners with a more flexible, interactive, and student-centered environment. These results align with previous research suggesting that blended learning enhances both knowledge retention and learner engagement [1][2]. One of the key observations in this study is the increase in learner autonomy. Students who engaged in the blended learning environment showed a marked improvement in their ability to take charge of their own learning process. They became more comfortable using supplementary grammar tools, such as interactive quizzes, video lessons, and grammar games, outside of the classroom. This supports the claim that blended learning environments promote independent learning behaviors and foster self-regulated learning strategies [3]. The qualitative data from interviews also highlight the positive perception students had towards the blended approach. Many found that being able to review materials at their own pace contributed significantly to their understanding. This reflects the benefits of asynchronous learning, where students can revisit grammar explanations and practice exercises multiple times until they grasp the concept fully, an advantage not always available in traditional classroom settings. However, some challenges were noted. A few students reported initial difficulty adapting to the digital components of the blended approach, citing issues such as lack of digital literacy or limited access to technology. These challenges suggest the importance of ensuring all students have adequate support and resources when implementing blended learning strategies. In essence, the study demonstrates that the blended learning approach is not only an effective tool for improving grammar performance but also a valuable method for cultivating learner autonomy. It offers a more individualized and flexible pathway to language acquisition, which may be especially beneficial in diverse and large classrooms where meeting every student’s needs in a traditional format can be challenging. Future research might explore the long-term impact of blended learning on other language skills such as writing or speaking and investigate how different learner profiles respond to various types of digital tools. Nevertheless, this study contributes to the growing evidence that well-designed blended instruction can enhance both academic outcomes and learner independence in EFL settings. CONCLUSION This study highlights the effectiveness of the blended learning approach in enhancing both grammatical competence and learner autonomy among EFL students. By integrating traditional classroom methods with digital tools, students benefited from greater flexibility, repeated exposure to grammar content, and opportunities for self-directed learning. The improved academic performance of the experimental group confirms that a blended approach can significantly enhance learning outcomes compared to conventional methods alone. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that blended learning not only supports academic success but also

Original article 1202 nurtures essential skills such as time management, critical thinking, and self-motivation—traits that are crucial for lifelong learning. Despite minor challenges, such as initial technological barriers, the overall response to the blended model was positive, with students expressing higher engagement and satisfaction. These findings suggest that language educators should consider implementing blended models in grammar instruction to meet the evolving needs of 21st-century learners. With appropriate planning, teacher support, and technological infrastructure, blended learning can serve as a powerful pedagogical strategy in foreign language education. References 1. Alammary, A.
