Love your Data! FAIR and Open Science in Action [Workshop]

Wilbrandt, Jeanne

Abstract

Context This face-to-face workshop was given on 2025-10-21 in the context of the 1st Open Access Day of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, Czech Republic. Abstract The creation of FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) data and metadata following the ideals of Open Science and Open Access is based on individual research data management (RDM), essentially actions of love towards ones own (meta)data. This interactive workshop briefly introduces reasons to talk about RDM, the basics of RDM, the FAIR principles (using my FAIR card deck), and Open Science. One of the most crucial aspects of good RDM is documentation. While documentation can come in many shapes and forms, e.g., as enrichment with project metadata, labelling files, or describing a procedure, it is important to recognize that conveying information to the next user (thereby ensuring reusability) is not always trivial. We illustrate the many necessary considerations in a self-experiment: we write and reuse assembly instructions for a vehicle made from building blocks as an analogy to sharing data documentation. Given well documented data, publishing it can still be a challenge, especially when considering best practices of folder organization as suggested by repositories. Here, folder structure templates can be very helpful, so the recently developed* a folder structure template (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.15835125) is presented. Additionally, the newly developed Knowledge Transfer File (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.17341188) is introduced as a tool to facilitate handover when leaving a working group. With these two instruments, project starts and ends can be structured more efficiently. * Demerdash, Dockhorn & Wilbrandt (in rev.)
