COGNITIVE ANALYSIS OF PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS IN ENGLISH AND UZBEK LANGUAGES Ibragimova Maftuna, Master's Student at AIU 1. Abstract This article explores the cognitive aspects of phraseological units in English and Uzbek languages. The study focuses on how these units reflect cultural and conceptual worldviews, analyzing their similarities and differences from a cognitive linguistics perspective. The research highlights metaphorical and metonymic processes underlying phraseological units and their role in shaping linguistic and cultural identity. 2. Introduction Phraseological units (PUs) represent an essential component of any language, as they encapsulate cultural wisdom, traditions, and worldviews. Cognitive linguistics provides a valuable framework for analyzing how phraseological expressions emerge and evolve within different linguistic and cultural contexts. This paper examines the cognitive mechanisms behind phraseological units in English and Uzbek, focusing on metaphorical and conceptual mappings that shape their meanings. 3. Cognitive Linguistics and Phraseology Cognitive linguistics emphasizes the connection between language and human cognition, particularly how meaning is structured in the mind. Phraseological units are closely linked to conceptual metaphors and metonymies, which enable speakers to understand abstract concepts through familiar experiences. 4. Comparative Analysis of English and Uzbek Phraseological Units 1. 1. Metaphorical Phraseological Units - **Time as Money**:

(*Time is gold.*) - **Life as a Journey**: - English: 'He is at a turning point in his life.' - Uzbek: 'U hayot yo‘lida burilish yasadi.' (*He made a turn on the road of life.*) 2. 2. Metonymic Phraseological Units - **Heart as Emotion**: - English: 'To break someone’s heart.' - Uzbek: 'Yuragi sinmoq.' (*The heart is broken.*) - **Head as Intelligence**: - English: 'To have a good head for business.' - Uzbek: 'Uning boshi biznesga ishlaydi.' (*His head works for business.*) 5. Cultural Reflections in Phraseological Units Although many cognitive processes are universal, cultural influences shape phraseological meanings uniquely. Uzbek phraseology is deeply rooted in Islamic traditions, hospitality, and collectivism, while English phraseology reflects individualism and pragmatism. For example, Uzbek has many expressions related to hospitality, such as 'Mehmon otangdan ulug‘' (*A guest is greater than your father*), which has no direct equivalent in English but reflects the high status of guests in Uzbek culture. 6. Conclusion The cognitive analysis of phraseological units in English and Uzbek languages reveals both universal and culture-specific elements. While metaphorical and metonymic processes underpin phraseology in both languages, cultural values influence the way these expressions develop and are used. Studying these cognitive mechanisms enhances cross-linguistic understanding and contributes to the broader field of cognitive linguistics and intercultural communication.
