The dataset was prepared for publication within the NFDI4Memory FAIR Data Fellowship at the Leibniz-Institut für Europäische Geschichte (IEG) Mainz.
Research question(s) The dataset was created to answer the following research questions: 1) How did the street naming in Lviv emerge and evolve from the late 14th to the 18th century? 2) What linguistic and cultural patterns can be observed in the historical urbanonymy (street names) of a multiethnic city such as Lviv? 3) To analyse the etymology and duration of the use of street names, identifying the stages of their development from descriptive phrases (which I call "proto-names," such as "the street going to the Armenian church") to established, proper names (like "Armenian Street") where possible. Sources The data is based primarily on archival and published Latin and Polish records of Lviv’s municipal documentation. A full bibliographical list of sources is included alongside the dataset. I. The collection process involved systematic extraction and transcription of street names from medieval and early modern municipal and tax records, followed by their translation into Ukrainian and English. Each entry was dated and referenced. The data was subsequently cleaned, standartised, and structured for integration into digital formats, enabling its use in mapping and further digital humanities analysis. Data Structure Internal structure The dataset represents street names of late medieval and early modern Lviv in the 14th–18th centuries, recorded from various historical sources (mainly, city council books and tax registers). Each record corresponds to one street name (hodonym) as attested in a specific document, and contains information about its historical variant and reference to the archival or printed source. The data is structured as a relational table with unique identifiers for each record and normalized fields for comparison across different sources and languages.
Data quality and cleaning The data was entered manually based on archival transcriptions and published registers. During the cleaning process: ·spelling variants and orthographic differences were standardized; ·uncertain readings or illegible fragments were added in brackets ([]); ·locations were verified against corresponding researches based on later (Austrian) registers and maps. Data Enrichment To enhance interoperability and accessibility, street names were transliterated and translated into modern Ukrainian and English; historical coordinates were matched with modern map layers using QGIS. For convenience, two datasets are provided: a bilingual translation (UkrainianEnglish) version and an English-only version, the latter ensuring compatibility in case of encoding problems with Ukrainian characters. Additionally, a geopackage file (Lviv_streets.gpkg) accompanies the dataset, containing spatial layers visualizing street names from the 14th–18th centuries. Variables and values Variable Description Type / Values str_id Unique record identifier Integer str_name Street name as it appears in the source *Standardized form (modernized spelling) Text str_date Street record date or year Text str_translate_eng/ua Translated street name Text str_source Archival or bibliographic reference Text source_page Page (in a published source), sheet (in archival sources) Text source_case The number of the court case in which the street name is used * The numbers of court cases in the folios were delivered in the 18th-19th centuries, so they are not authentic, but are nevertheless provided for ease of use and searching for street names, because several street names are often used on one sheet (especially in sources of this type). Open QGIS and load the geopackage file Lviv_streets.gpkg. It contains two layers: ·Lviv_streets_str_object1 — visualization of street names from the 14th–16th centuries ·Lviv_streets_str_object2 — visualization of street names from the 17th–18th centuries 2. Join the table to the spatial layer: ·Right-click the layer (e.g. Lviv_streets_str_object1) → Properties → Joins → Add Join. ·Set Join field = id and Target field = id. ·Apply the join to link all records by their unique identifier. 3. To add a modern basemap: · Go to Plugins → Manage and Install Plugins... ·Find and install QuickMapServices. ·Then open Web → QuickMapServices → OSM → OSM Standard to display the modern city map under the historical layers. Ethical issues The dataset does not include personal data or sensitive information. All historical materials are in the public domain. Ethical considerations mainly concern: ·proper citation of archival and printed sources; ·transparent documentation of editorial interventions (translation, reconstruction); ·FAIR data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) applied to ensure responsible data sharing.
