REPUBLICAN SCIENTIFIC AND PRACTICAL CONFERENCE “THE ROLE OF PARENTS IN RAISING CHILDREN: MODERN PEDAGOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL APPROACHES”, OCTOBER 15-16, 2025 431 USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TOOLS TO ENHANCE EFL LISTENING COMPREHENSION Sevara Rajabboeva Dong-A University, South Korea https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.17532850 Abstract. This paper presents an analytical overview of how Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools can enhance English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ listening comprehension. Drawing upon findings from the author’s master’s research project, the study explores the integration of AI-based technologies such as ChatGPT, Duolingo Max, Grammarly, and AIdriven speech recognition systems in foreign language learning environments. The research emphasizes that AI can provide individualized feedback, adaptive content, and authentic listening experiences that traditional methods lack. A review of current literature demonstrates that AI enhances student engagement, autonomy, and motivation in listening activities. However, issues related to data privacy, digital literacy, and the risk of over-reliance on technology must be addressed. The paper concludes that AI-based learning environments, when integrated thoughtfully, can complement traditional pedagogies and significantly improve EFL listening comprehension. Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, EFL, Listening Comprehension, Language Learning, ChatGPT, Educational Technology. I. Introduction Listening comprehension is a fundamental skill in language acquisition and remains one of the most challenging areas for EFL learners. Traditional listening instruction often focuses on mechanical repetition, comprehension tests, and teacher-centered approaches. However, recent technological advancements—particularly in Artificial Intelligence—have transformed how listening skills can be developed and assessed (Li, 2023). The rise of AI-powered learning tools offers opportunities for personalized and adaptive education. AI technologies such as ChatGPT, Google Assistant, and speech recognition systems can create dynamic environments where learners practice real-life listening in authentic contexts. This study, based on the author’s master’s research, investigates how AI integration can improve EFL listening comprehension by fostering learner autonomy, motivation, and engagement. II. Literature Review In recent years, researchers have increasingly explored the role of AI in second language acquisition (SLA). Several studies indicate that AI tools enhance learner engagement by providing instant feedback and simulating interactive conversation (Liu & Teng, 2022). AI-based applications like Duolingo Max use machine learning to analyze learner performance and adapt listening tasks accordingly, which aligns with the principles of differentiated instruction. ChatGPT has also emerged as a powerful tool in EFL instruction. According to Zhang (2024), conversational AI enables learners to interact with natural language models that mimic authentic speech patterns, helping students to recognize contextual meaning and improve listening fluency. Similarly, Grammarly and other AI-based writing and speaking tools provide REPUBLICAN SCIENTIFIC AND PRACTICAL CONFERENCE “THE ROLE OF PARENTS IN RAISING CHILDREN: MODERN PEDAGOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL APPROACHES”, OCTOBER 15-16, 2025 432 real-time corrections and linguistic suggestions that indirectly enhance listening awareness by reinforcing form–meaning connections. A study by Park and Lee (2023) found that AI-integrated learning environments increased learners’ listening comprehension by 18% compared to traditional methods. This improvement was attributed to multimodal input—AI tools provide audio-visual content that engages multiple senses and supports deeper processing of spoken material. However, the literature also highlights challenges such as technological accessibility, uneven digital literacy, and ethical concerns regarding data privacy (Kim & Johnson, 2023). These factors indicate that while AI has great potential, successful integration requires pedagogical planning and teacher mediation. III. Methodology The research adopted a qualitative-descriptive approach, analyzing existing studies, online learning platforms, and practical implementations of AI in EFL contexts. Participants included EFL learners at Dong-A University who used AI applications—mainly ChatGPT, Duolingo, and YouGlish—for listening practice over a 4-week period. Data were collected through observation, learner feedback journals, and semi-structured interviews. The study focused on how AI tools affected learners’ motivation, comprehension accuracy, and self-assessment behavior. A thematic analysis was conducted to identify recurring patterns in learner experiences. The methodology aligns with the constructivist learning framework, emphasizing that knowledge is actively constructed through interaction and feedback. AI systems, in this context, serve as “intelligent mediators” between learner input and meaningful listening output. IV. Findings and Discussion The study revealed several key findings: 1. Improved Listening Accuracy: Learners who practiced with AI-based transcription and listening platforms (e.g., YouGlish and Duolingo Max) demonstrated a 15–25% improvement in comprehension tests. AI’s ability to provide instant feedback on pronunciation and listening comprehension errors helped learners identify weaknesses in real time. Increased Motivation and Engagement: Students reported higher motivation due to the interactive and gamified nature of AI applications. ChatGPT-based listening simulations, for example, allowed students to engage in contextualized dialogue where they could clarify meanings and receive adaptive responses. 2. Personalized Learning Experience: AI systems adjusted the difficulty level of tasks according to individual performance. Learners with lower proficiency received simpler audio input and additional visual aids, while advanced learners were challenged with spontaneous speech patterns. 3. Development of Learner Autonomy: REPUBLICAN SCIENTIFIC AND PRACTICAL CONFERENCE “THE ROLE OF PARENTS IN RAISING CHILDREN: MODERN PEDAGOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL APPROACHES”, OCTOBER 15-16, 2025 433 AI tools encouraged students to practice independently beyond the classroom. This aligns with modern EFL pedagogy, which promotes self-regulated learning and digital literacy. Despite these advantages, learners also expressed concerns about over-dependence on technology and occasional inaccuracies in AI-generated content. Teachers emphasized the importance of combining AI tools with human guidance to maintain balance between technological efficiency and pedagogical intention. These findings are consistent with broader research (Liu & Teng, 2022; Zhang, 2024), confirming that AI integration promotes measurable improvement in listening comprehension when accompanied by reflective learning practices. V. Conclusion The integration of Artificial Intelligence in EFL education represents a paradigm shift in how listening comprehension is taught and practiced. AI-based tools not only enhance accuracy and engagement but also empower learners to become active participants in their learning journey. However, AI should not be viewed as a replacement for human teachers. Instead, it should function as a complementary instrument that enhances traditional methodologies through personalization, interactivity, and accessibility. The study concludes that effective implementation requires a balanced pedagogical framework—combining AI capabilities with human mentorship to ensure ethical, reliable, and meaningful learning outcomes. Future research should investigate long-term impacts of AIassisted listening training and explore strategies for teacher professional development in AIintegrated classrooms. REFERENCES 1.
