Our evaluations count! Conveying obligation in English. SDGE of the Egramint project

Garcia-Pastor, Maria Dolores

Abstract

The instructional grammar sequence Our Evaluations Count! Conveying Obligation in English adopts an explicit, form-focused multilingual instructional approach aimed at enhancing young EFL learners' metalinguistic awareness and promoting cross-linguistic transfer among English, Spanish, and Catalan. This didactic sequence was developed as part of a funded research project (ref. PID2019-105298RB-I00), known by its acronym EGRAMINT (Enseñanza gramatical interlingüística). It comprises a series of tasks structured around three pedagogical phases—observation, manipulation, and systematization—as defined by the project’s instructional prototype. In the observation phase, learners' attention is drawn to modal verbs expressing obligation in English through the analysis of short internet reviews. Working in pairs, children reflect on the form, meaning, and function of these verbs, fostering awareness through dyadic interaction. The manipulation phase engages students in using these modal verbs through multiple-choice activities and consciousness-raising tasks. These activities provide opportunities for controlled output, rule discovery, and pattern recognition, encouraging learners to explore and internalize grammatical structures. In the systematization phase, learners are encouraged to apply their knowledge in meaningful, yet controlled contexts. They complete two key tasks:i) writing a brief negative review based on a given positive version, and ii) completing an interactive cloze activity that requires negotiation and discussion to determine appropriate answers. These tasks aim to promote both reflective engagement with the target forms and deeper understanding of the review genre, ultimately supporting the development of accuracy and automaticity in usage. The final task in the sequence involves the independent production of a review, where students use modal verbs of obligation more freely. This is followed by peer revision with a specific focus on the use of modal verbs. Finally, learners complete a metalinguistic report, designed to help them consolidate their understanding and reinforce grammatical knowledge gained throughout the sequence.

Egramint - PID2019-105298RB-I00 1 OUR EVALUATIONS COUNT! OUR EVALUATIONS COUNT!
