100 Years of Quantum Mechanics Literature – A New Baseline Ludwig Schreier (Dated: May 31, 2025) “For I was conscious that I knew practically nothing...” – Plato: Apology of Socrates 22d A qualitative survey of the literature on quantum mechanics (QM) has been conducted. The survey includes works published since 1921. Several criteria were introduced to refine the list of literature to include only QM textbooks. As of May 31, 2025, the list contains 403 entries. It is probably the most comprehensive cross-publisher list of QM literature available today. It is essentially a small database. Experienced readers and researchers can expand their libraries or knowledge about authors and textbooks. The method, data sources, analysis, and limitations of the survey are briefly discussed. Keywords: Quantum Mechanics, Quantum Theory, Literature, Textbooks, Archive I. SYNOPSIS This article is organized into the following sections: Method, Scope, Sources, Analysis, Quality, Outlook, and Summary. The method behind the survey is outlined briefly. The "Scope" section provides details on the scope and tailoring of the survey. The Analysis and Quality sections discuss aspects related to the search data. The article concludes with an outlook and a summary. The references are not citations, but rather a list of books. A. Footnotes Please note that this article uses footnotes. References are reserved exclusively for the resulting QM textbooks. II. METHOD The following survey was conducted manually, meaning the references are based on a human search. No sophisticated search software or service was used; however, literature databases were accessed. A search string was entered, and the results were retrieved, analyzed, and managed by Zotero. The tool also relies on other databases, such as WorldCat. Additional data transformation was required based on the data format, etc. Certain attributes, such as ISBNs and page counts, had to be reworked manually. See the quality assessment section later on for more information. The analysis section discusses aspects of the search approach and results. First, however, the scope of the survey is discussed. III. SCOPE Due to the popularity of quantum mechanics and the vast number of publications, the survey had to be tailored. The main goal was to compile a list of textbooks published since the 1920s. The set should be centered in QM. This means excluding popular science topics such as “quantum healing,” etc., and focusing on the real physical teachings of QM. Journal articles, papers, dissertations, and other publications were excluded. The scope was modified for special cases and limited to specific QM developments. Some of the textbooks have been in use for a very long time and have served as learning materials for physicists in the past and present. Many of these textbooks can be considered reference books. These books have also been translated or transferred between publishers. The exact history is not always available. This means that the search is limited. Certain quantum mechanics (QM) topics are excluded, such as quantum dots, quantum information, and quantum technology (see the criteria below). These books may contain an introductory chapter on QM/QT but focus on a specific topic, such as new theories or technologies. Topics such as functional analysis (Hilbert spaces) are closely related to QM and have been included, albeit with limited search depth. Other limitations include books on nuclear or atomic physics (models, spectroscopy, reactors), history, and so on. The level of the textbooks ranges from undergraduate to graduate. A list of object categories (ignored, limited, or avoided) is provided in the following subsection. A. Review & partial inspection A walk-through review of the search results was performed. The results were checked, but not every book was fully reviewed. A qualitative approach is helpful here because most literature from before the 1980s was better reviewed qualitatively. B. Sets of criteria Note: Sets overlap; no hard boundaries were intended. Attributes are in random order. An extra T stands for Theory. Definitely included: 2 •Quantum Mechanics (QM), Quantum Theory (QT) •Mathematical QM, Foundations, Concepts •Applications, Theory, Quantization •Modern, Advanced, Handbook, Intermediate, Introduction •Non-relativistic QM •Major scientific publishers (only) Limited, but some include: •Lesser known publishers •Other languages or origins, e.g. German and Russian, USSR •Adv. and Frontiers, GroupT, ScatteringT, Problems •QED, QFT, Relativistic QM, Algebras •Nuclear, Atomic, ShellT, WaveT/Functions, Particles, Angular Momentum, Spin, MatrixT •Q-Stats/Statistical-Q, OperatorT, ManyBody •QM as Part of Series or Volumes, QM Reviews, Lectures, Lecture Notes, History, Philosophy •RenormalizationT, PerturbationT, Solid State-Q, GaugeT •Hilbert Space, H-Methods, Q-Magnetism, FieldT, FunctionalT, PathintegralT •Greater Asia, India, etc., QM chapters of encyclopedias •New or planned releases from 2022, partially included Avoided or skipping: •Tutorials, Solution Manuals, Exercises, Short Courses, Collected Papers, Notes, Lectures •Q-Optics (Coh/Decoh), Q-Chem, Q-Comp/Prog, Q-Elect, Q-Grav, Q-Entropy, Q-Crypto, Q-Chaos, QCD •Q-Dots, Lasers, Q-Semi, Q-Graphene, Q-BandT, Molecular, DFT, Nonlinear, Phase Space, Operational-Q •Q in Medicine, Q-Symmetries, Q-Information, Potentials, Q-Liquids, Collision, Q-MonteCarlo •Birth, Pop Science, Schr¨odinger Cat, Q-Legacy, Non-Scientific, Simplified, Demystified, Trends, etc. •Bose-Einstein, Q-Gas, Categories, Q-Biology, QModels, ML/AI, Q-Materials •University lecture notes, self-hosted (without ISBN, DOI) IV. SOURCES OF TEXTBOOKS The first task of the survey was to identify textbook literature sources suitable for QM/QT. In the course of the survey, the database was iterated several times. A. Challenges There are specific challenges with book sources. For instance, due to mergers, acquisitions, or other arrangements, such as distribution agreements, some databases may include content from other publishers. For example, a search for Wiley may include Princeton University Press. Conversely, Elsevier acquired Academic Press (AP), yet not all books are available under the Elsevier brand. A larger number of books have been made available digitally (via Optical Character Recognition (OCR) or other methods), but some have been left behind as original AP publications. These books are not included in search databases and are not available as e-books or reprints. They have been manually aggregated. Some publishers are far from the typical "search and find" method. For example, Mir Moscow1. Manual browsing of major publishers (Elsevier, Springer, Taylor & Francis, and Wiley) was the chosen method, but manual interpretation of the results was often necessary. For example, some non-QM titles were found in the QM category and had to be ignored. About one-third of the items had to be checked manually. Reverse lookups of ISBNs were done sporadically to confirm items. Sometimes new ISBNs were introduced for older books, etc. See the quality discussion below for more details. Some books were added based on the authors’ experience with and knowledge of QM literature. Despite the aforementioned challenges, the author believes that a sophisticated collection of QM textbooks has been researched and sets a new baseline. Finally, some books will be missing. The author apologizes if valuable textbook sources were omitted due to ignorance. B. V. ANALYSIS Some basic statistical analysis was performed on the search results. This analysis addresses missing or inaccurate data. It also addresses information that is available but slightly incorrect (e.g., publication date). See Quality for more details. All databases were accessed from German networks without a login account to ensure unbiased, unfiltered results. VI. QUALITY Important authors are included in the list. Contrary to preferences such as “best book,” “cheapest,” “shortest,” or “most advanced,” etc., answering these questions was not the intention. If available, the number of pages depends on the edition and type of book; therefore, it is a qualitative indicator but not part of the resulting list. ISBNs usually work well, but despite careful checking, some do not work, are incorrect, or point to other editions. Some ISBNs are newly inverted. In this case, identifying an item may produce poor results. Depending on how entries are counted, the year may be shifted by ±1 (e.g., November 1978 may be listed as 1979 for reasons of the publication process or otherwise). Nevertheless, the aggregated bibliography has been carefully checked for errors. For example, added dots “.” at the end of titles and misspelled author names have been corrected to the best of our ability. I tried to use the print names as they appear on the covers. The core attributes primarily included are author, title, year, ISBN or DOI, publisher, and edition. Having more than one ISBN usually means there are multiple print types (softcover, hardcover, e-book). Most new works from the last decade have a DOI assigned. Many works from 1970 onwards have been assigned an ISBN. Some classic works have been reprinted, republished, or digitized, as mentioned above. It is worth noting that several books published by Dover Publications are based on books published over five decades ago but have newer publication dates. VII. OUTLOOK Future survey activities could include refining the scope of the search, searching databases7, and providing an advanced description of the results. Other ideas could include deriving actual content based on this list, such as a survey of mathematical QM books. Additionally, identifying items by QM framework (traditional, logical, algebraic, and operational approaches) in relation to the 7For example, https://www.doabooks.org or https://www.mdpi.com/books 4 available literature would be a task. Of course, new literature is always being prepared and will be added, so maintenance is suggested. VIII. SUMMARY A qualitative survey of quantum mechanics textbooks was conducted. The collection includes textbooks for all levels of expertise and covers major publications since 1921. The collection also includes Russian and German titles. To arrive at a final set, the scope had to be adjusted. The selection criteria and manual reworking of items provided some qualitative insights. Students or researchers looking for quantum mechanics textbooks are welcome to take a look at the resulting list. This set provides access to QM discoveries beyond typical search engine results. A. Final words QM literature can be examined from many perspectives. Finally, as a tip, some older books have been digitized and archived on the Internet Archive, including the classic books of Tomonaga. IX.
