SEHRENE Project Roll-up

Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação; Setiawan, Septian Sigit

Abstract

This is a SEHRENE project roll-up to support dissemination and communication activity of the project. Showcasing the project in an informative and engaging visual. The SEHRENE project (Store Electricity and Heat foR climate Neutral Europe) is a research and innovation action developing a novel integrated Electrothermal Energy Storage (ETES) system up to TRL4. The core technological innovation involves a first prototype consisting of a High-Temperature Heat Pump (HTHP) (10kW, aiming up to 200ºC and an advanced Thermal Energy Storage (TES) (20 kWh) based on lattice structures. Running from January 2024 to June 2027 with a budget of over €3.5 million, the project aims to maximize the technical, economic, and environmental performance of the ETES, with strong expectations to significantly reduce CO2 emissions and avoid Critical Raw Materials (CRM) compared to lithium-ion batteries.

The team aims to maximizing technical, economic and environmental performance of the ETES while developing a strong numerical approach with digital twins and Energy Management System (EMS). Store Electricity and Heat foR climatE Neutral Europe This project is funded by the European Union under the Grant Agreement no. 101135763. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or European Climate Infrastructure and Environment Agency (CINEA). Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them A design of High Temperature Heat Pump (HTHP) up to 200°C with a first prototype of 10 kW at lower temperature. New Thermal Energy Storage based on lattice structures increasing energy density up to 30% vs the SoA with a great compatibility with PCM for global durability. Extending the concept by upscaling the design of the ETES to 3 use cases with expected CAPEX below 350€/kWh. Strong expectation on environmental issues by reducing CO2 emission (targeting up to 15 Mt/year by 2040), avoiding the use of critical raw materials (CRM), resulting in a more favorable life cycle assessment (LCA) compared to lithium-ion batteries.
