The integrated approach is designed to strengthen conceptual understanding, reading comprehension, analytical skills, administrative thinking, and long-term academic motivation. The PODSCORB framework, traditionally associated with Public Administration, is adapted in this study as a structured learning-management tool to guide students in planning, organizing, coordinating, and reporting their academic tasks. This helps learners develop study discipline, time-management abilities, and a clear sense of responsibility. SQ3R, a proven scientific reading technique involving Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review, enhances comprehension and long-term retention of Social Science concepts, especially useful in History, Geography, and Civics. The Vision-Based Learning component engages students in goal-setting practices, reflective journaling, and long-term academic planning—essential habits for aspirants of future competitive examinations such as UPSC Civil Services. Data was collected through pre-tests, post-tests, observation schedules, feedback questionnaires, and reflective teacher diaries. Statistical techniques, including mean, percentage analysis, and paired sample t-test, were employed to measure the effectiveness of the intervention. The results demonstrate significant improvement in students’ academic performance, retention skills, analytical ability, and self-discipline. The post-test mean score increased dramatically from 43.9 to 80.1, with a highly significant tvalue of 14.62 (p < 0.01), confirming the positive impact of the integrated model. Qualitative observations further reveal enhanced classroom participation, stronger study habits, goal orientation, and improved confidence to attempt GK-based and applicationoriented questions. The integration of the three models creates a holistic learning environment that aligns with the competencies outlined in NEP 2020, making Social Science more meaningful, engaging, and future-oriented. Overall, the PODSCORB–SQ3R–Vision Integrated Model emerges as a practical, scalable, and transformative approach suitable for school education, competitive exam foundations, and 21st-century learning demands. 1.INTRODUCTION Social Science education plays a transformative role in shaping informed, analytical, and responsible citizens. In an era where students encounter vast information, diverse social realities, and increasing academic competition—especially in examinations like Civil Services (IAS)—the need for practical, structured, and application-oriented learning approaches has become more important than ever. However, several challenges persist in traditional classroom instruction: Students memorize facts but fail to apply concepts. Retention levels decline after examinations. Lack of structured study habits leads to poor performance. Classroom learning rarely connects with real-life governance, administration, and civic responsibilities. To address these gaps, this study introduces a holistic pedagogical model that integrates: 1. PODSCORB (Administrative & Life-Management Framework) A classical model by Luther Gulick comprising: P – Planning, O – Organizing, D – Directing, S – Staffing, CO – Coordinating, R – Reporting, B – Budgeting.
International Journal of Advanced Scientific and Technical Research ISSN 2249-9954 Available online on http://www.rspublication.com/ijst/index.html volume 15, No. 6, 2025 DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.17603040 Original Article ©2025 RS Publication, [email protected] 22 This model is usually taught in Public Administration and Management studies. But in this research, PODSCORB is innovatively adapted for school-level learning, helping students manage: Their study schedules Individual responsibilities Team-based classroom activities Time management Academic planning and reporting 2. SQ3R (Scientific Study-Reading Technique) A structured reading-learning strategy comprising: Survey – Question – Read – Recite – Review This method enhances comprehension, retention, and recall—especially in subjects like History, Geography, Political Science, and Civics, which require deep conceptual clarity. 3. Vision-Based Learning Approach This includes: Setting short-term and long-term academic goals Establishing personal learning vision statements Creating self-assessment frameworks Strengthening intrinsic motivation Together, these three approaches form a comprehensive pedagogical triangle that strengthens: Cognitive skills Analytical abilities Retention and recall Real-life application of knowledge Planning and execution abilities Why Social Science? Social Science is a subject that deals with: Human interaction Government policies Historical development Social structures Geographical realities
International Journal of Advanced Scientific and Technical Research ISSN 2249-9954 Available online on http://www.rspublication.com/ijst/index.html volume 15, No. 6, 2025 DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.17603040 Original Article ©2025 RS Publication, [email protected] 23 These themes perfectly align with the application-oriented nature of PODSCORB, the analytical structure of SQ3R, and the goal-setting principles of Vision-Based Learning. Thus, integrating these three methods creates a powerful learning model that prepares students not only for school exams but also for competitive examinations like IAS, Group I, Group II, and other civil services. Need for the Study Modern students face distraction, time mismanagement, and lack of long-term focus. A combined pedagogical model helps them: Study smarter, not harder Master Social Science concepts Connect classroom learning with real-world governance Develop life-long learning habits Become self-directed learners Scope of the Study This study is conducted in a high-school setting in Andhra Pradesh, focusing on Social Science students from Grades VIII–X. It examines: Improvement in academic performance Student response to new methods Changes in retention and application skills Impact on discipline, planning, and study habits Research Gap No previous study has combined PODSCORB + SQ3R + Vision into a single pedagogical framework for school-level Social Science education. This research fills that gap by creating a unique, holistic, practical model. 2.LITERATURE REVIEW A literature review provides a theoretical, conceptual, and empirical foundation for the present study. This chapter examines previous works related to (i) pedagogical strategies in Social Science, (ii) effectiveness of structured learning models, (iii) application of administrative frameworks like PODSCORB in education, and (iv) scientific reading techniques such as SQ3R. The review highlights insights from national and international studies and establishes the relevance of integrating these models for school-level holistic learning.

Scholars emphasize its role in developing critical thinking, civic responsibility, and analytical skills (NCERT, 2020). Researchers like Martorella (2011) argue that Social Science must move beyond rote memorization and adopt inquiry-based and application-oriented teaching methods to connect students with real-life situations. A report by UNESCO (2019) emphasizes that Social Science learning must combine historical understanding, geographical reasoning, and civic participation for preparing students for democratic citizenship. This aligns with the present study’s approach of merging administrative and reading frameworks to enhance meaningful learning. Research in the Indian context (Rao, 2018) shows that Social Science is often treated as a “memory-based subject,” leading to low student interest. Hence, structured techniques such as SQ3R improve comprehension and long-term retention, while administrative models like PODSCORB support planning and organization of learning activities. 2.2 Studies on Structured Learning Frameworks Structured pedagogical models have been widely studied for improving student performance. Spady (1994) introduced Outcome-Based Education (OBE) as a structured approach that guides students through measurable learning outcomes. Although OBE focuses on what students should achieve, it does not prescribe specific techniques for reading, organizing, or managing learning tasks. Bruner’s (1960) Spiral Curriculum suggests that structured sequencing helps improve student recall. Similarly, Vygotsky’s (1978) Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) highlights the importance of guided learning with scaffolding. These theories indicate that students perform better when provided with step-by-step, structured, and guided learning models, which aligns with the objectives of integrating PODSCORB and SQ3R. 2.3 Literature on PODSCORB as a Functional Framework The PODSCORB model was introduced by Luther Gulick (1937) as a practical administrative system for managing organizational tasks. Studies in Public Administration describe PODSCORB as a universally adaptable model suitable for planning, execution, supervision, coordination, and reporting (Henry, 2013). Although PODSCORB is primarily used in management and governance, recent studies suggest its adaptability for educational administration (Mukherjee, 2017). Researchers
International Journal of Advanced Scientific and Technical Research ISSN 2249-9954 Available online on http://www.rspublication.com/ijst/index.html volume 15, No. 6, 2025 DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.17603040 Original Article ©2025 RS Publication, [email protected] 25 such as Rao & Singh (2021) argue that PODSCORB can help students develop organizational habits, leadership skills, and responsibility. However, no significant research applies PODSCORB directly to classroom-level student learning, especially in Social Science education. This represents a key research gap that the present study aims to address. 2.4 Literature on SQ3R as a Reading and Retention Technique The SQ3R method, developed by Francis P. Robinson (1946), is one of the most studied reading-comprehension strategies. Studies consistently show that SQ3R helps students: understand complex texts more easily, recall information longer, develop analytical reading habits, improve examination performance (Williams, 2014). In Social Science—where textbooks are dense, concept-heavy, and rich in facts—the SQ3R method provides a highly efficient approach. Indian studies (Banu, 2019; Joseph, 2022) indicate that SQ3R significantly enhances comprehension for high school students, especially in History, Civics, and Geography. Despite the proven benefits, SQ3R is rarely integrated with broader learning-management models like PODSCORB. 2.5 Vision-Based Learning Studies Vision-based learning draws from humanistic psychology and self-regulated learning theories by Rogers (1969) and Zimmerman (2002). These studies highlight the importance of: personal goal-setting, intrinsic motivation, future-oriented thinking, reflective learning. Research suggests that students with a clear academic vision perform better and develop stronger habits (Stevens & Cooper, 2009). In competitive fields such as UPSC Civil Services, IAS aspirants utilize vision statements and study-roadmaps to stay disciplined over long preparation cycles.
International Journal of Advanced Scientific and Technical Research ISSN 2249-9954 Available online on http://www.rspublication.com/ijst/index.html volume 15, No. 6, 2025 DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.17603040 Original Article ©2025 RS Publication, [email protected] 26 However, there is limited literature on linking vision-based learning with school-level instruction, particularly in Social Science. 2.6 Combined Approaches: Gap in Existing Research Several studies explore standalone pedagogical methods—PODSCORB for administration, SQ3R for reading, and vision approaches for motivation. However: No existing research integrates these three techniques together. No study focuses on applying PODSCORB to school students’ study management. Very few studies explore how these methods can strengthen preparation for higherlevel competitive exams like UPSC. No literature examines their direct impact on Social Science performance in Andhra Pradesh schools. Thus, the combined PODSCORB–SQ3R–Vision Model introduced in this research fills a unique and important gap. 2.7 Summary of the Literature Review The literature strongly supports the idea that structured learning, organized planning, and scientific reading strategies enhance student academic performance. While each model— PODSCORB, SQ3R, and vision-based learning—shows proven benefits individually, no integrated approach has been tested previously. This review establishes a strong theoretical and empirical foundation for introducing a holistic, structured, application-based learning framework for Social Science students, benefiting both regular school learners and aspirants of higher-level civil services. 3.RESEARCH METHODOLOGY This chapter outlines the methodological framework adopted for the study. It explains the research design, population and sample, tools and techniques used for data collection, method of analysis, and the ethical considerations followed during the study. The aim is to examine the effectiveness of the PODSCORB–SQ3R–Vision Integrated Learning Model in enhancing Social Science learning outcomes, study habits, and exam preparedness among school students of Andhra Pradesh.
International Journal of Advanced Scientific and Technical Research ISSN 2249-9954 Available online on http://www.rspublication.com/ijst/index.html volume 15, No. 6, 2025 DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.17603040 Original Article ©2025 RS Publication, [email protected] 27 3.1 Research Design The present study adopts a mixed-methods research design, combining both qualitative and quantitative approaches. This design is appropriate because: Quantitative data helps determine the measurable improvement in students’ performance. Qualitative feedback helps assess perceptions, attitudes, and behavioural changes among students. The mixed-method approach ensures depth, reliability, and holistic interpretation of the findings. 3.2 Population of the Study The population consists of high school students (Classes 8–10) studying Social Science in Andhra Pradesh. These students represent varied academic backgrounds, including rural, semi-urban, and government school sectors. 3.3 Sample and Sampling Technique A sample of 60 students was selected using a purposive sampling technique. The sample included: Students from different academic levels (high achievers, average, and slow learners), Students with varying study habits and reading skills, Learners preparing for foundation-level GK and Civics useful for future civil services aspirations. Purposive sampling was chosen because the study aims to measure the impact of a specific structured-learning model requiring active student participation. 3.4 Tools and Techniques Used To evaluate the effectiveness of the integrated model, the following tools were used:
