Recommendations of the GI for Conducting Student Thesis Papers in Industry ECSS 2024, Malta, October 2024 Jörg Desel FernUniversität in Hagen
A Word of Introduction •What are ‘External Theses’ and how can the GI Recommendations help to guide them? •According to the GI, “External theses are thesis papers that students complete as part of their studies in a non-university setting.” •They are “an opportunity to foster and facilitate interactions between companies and universities.”, •and, they involve by definition “the participation of an external partner (outside of the faculty) in defining the tasks and supervising the thesis.” •What don’t they cover? •“The (…) recommendations do not apply to thesis work conducted at university-affiliated research institutions“ -e.g. Fraunhofer institutes, FZI etc.
Differences Between the Types of Higher Education Institutions •External vs. Internal thesis papers •External thesis papers are more common at universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen) and at vocational academies (Berufsakademien) •Internal thesis papers are more common at research-oriented universities •The GI-Recommendations are thus: •primarily aimed at universities •guidelines for students, professors and corporate partners for carrying out external theses successfully •Can facilitate a productive exchange of knowledge that benefits all parties.
Acknowledements •Who are the Authors of the recommendations? •Ralf Reussner •Bernd Voigt •Special thanks go to the following contributors from the University of Oldenburg for large parts of the text: •Prof. Dr. H.-J. Appelrath† •Dr. Grawunder •Contact: Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V. (GI), Ahrstraße 45 53175 Bonn (www.gi-ev.de)

WHAT IS AN INDUSTRIAL PH.D.? REGULATED AT STATE LEVEL 2011/2023 "Doctorado Industrial" (Industrial Ph.D.) applies to programs whose candidates take part in industrial research work or experimental development projects connected to their theses. These projects must be hosted by a company or Public Administration other than a university. They can be carried out exclusively at said company or Public Administration, or as a joint effort between those and the university. The Ph.D. candidate's work is supervised by a thesis tutor appointed by the university and a supervisor appointed by either the company or the Public Administration. Tutors can also be thesis advisors according to the Ph.D. Rules and Regulations for Doctoral Studies in Spain. ECSS 2024, 28-30 October, Malta
PURPOSE OF AN INDUSTRIAL PH.D. The aim is to promote the training of PhDs in an industrial environment at companies or at Public Administrations. This training consists of experimental development or industrial research projects to be undertaken as part of their Ph.D. thesis. Stimulate the creation of new companies and enhance the research and development capacity of the participating companies. Contribute to strengthening the country's competitiveness and economy. ECSS 2024, 28-30 October, Malta
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS? IN ORDER TO OBTAIN THE INDUSTRIAL MENTION IN THE PHD THESIS a) An employment or commercial contract of the Ph.D. candidate of al least one year during the thesis development by a private or public sector company or by a Public Administration other than the university. b) Participation of the PhD candidate in an industrial research or experimental development project hosted by the employing company or Public Administration (other than a university). The project must be directly related to the PhD thesis of the candidate, who is required to provide a scientific and technical progress report as proof of this attachment. The report will be subsequently validated by the university. c) An agreement must have been signed between the entity, company or public administration and the university for the academic development of the doctoral thesis, which will establish, as a minimum, the obligations of the parties and the industrial property right that may be generated.
