ALIGNED D1.2 – Description of scientific methods (Task 1.5 Framework for socio-economic assessment)

Tschulkow, Maxim

Abstract

Methods for socio-economic assessment The open-source models, assessing the sustainability of technologies and products within the bio-based sectors, consist of a set of tutorials and excel-based tools: · Model description for techno-economic assessment for technologies within the bio-based sectors The document consists of a brief description of the theoretical basis and a tutorial of how to use and calculate the economic indicators using the Excel-based TEA model. · Tool for techno-economic assessment (.xlsx file) The Excel-based tool contains the TEA model for calculating the economic feasibility and indicators of technologies with the aim to compare them with other alternative technologies. · Model description for the quantification of social indicators within the bio-based sectors The document consists of a brief description of the theoretical basis and a tutorial of how to use and quantify the social indicators using the Excel-based quantification model for social indicators. · Tool for the quantification of social indicators (.xlsx file) The document contains the Excel-based model for the quantification of social indicators to of technologies or products with the aim to compare them with other alternative technologies or products. · Model description for Stochastic multi-criteria decision analysis The document consists of a brief description of the theoretical basis and a tutorial for using the excel-based, stochastic multi-criteria decision analysis model and rank alternatives considering all aspects of sustainability. · Tool for stochastic multi-criteria decision analysis (.xlsx file) The document contains the excel-based stochastic multi-criteria decision analysis model to consider all sustainability indicators and rank the alternatives (e.g., technologies or products) accordingly. · File with change log List of changes compared to the previous version

Stochastic multi-criteria decision analysis description_ALIGNED_V2 Excel file • Fine-tuning the Excel file (all sheets): o have been made cleaner and clearer, o Increased the understanding and readability by using different colors and the sustainability-specific indicators, see below. o Adjusted from very general indicators (e.g. indicator X) to more sustainabilityspecific indicators (e.g. GHG (greenhouse gas emissions) for each pillar of sustainability to make it more tangible and understandable and less theoretical for the sustainability audience. o The product number has been increased from three to four products (product A, B, C, and D). • Sheet: Input parameters and results: o Added another field for the uncertainty levels (sigma) to better distinguish between the mean and the sigma values. o Added a weighting scheme that allows the user to adjust the weighting of indicators based on their preference. ▪ Note that the sheet ‘weights (w)’ has been linked to the weighting scheme, adjusting the model to the chosen weightings. o Improved the ranking diagram and added 4 diagrams to show the probability of rankings among different products. ▪ This improves the understanding of the results and makes the user aware of the probabilities of ranks. ▪ The interpretation and result field has been adapted to the new version. • Sheet: weights (w): o Has been adapted from random weights to chosen weights that are defined in the Sheet: Input parameters and results. Description: The description of the Excel file has been adapted to the new Excel file version and its more sustainability-specific indicators.
