56 THE SYNTACTIC FEATURES OF ONOMATOPOEIA IN THE CHINESE LANGUAGE Tashmukhamedova Dildora Azizi qizi, Doctorate student of Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies [email protected] Abstract. This article examines the syntactic functions of onomatopoeic words in the Chinese language. Opinions of prominent Chinese linguists on onomatopoeia are presented, and their functions in sentences are analyzed with examples. The perspectives reflected in Modern Chinese Grammar are also discussed. Keywords: onomatopoeia, syntax, sentence constituents, subject, predicate, attribute, adverbial. Onomatopoeia, or sound-imitative words, play an important role in many languages by connecting human auditory perception to linguistic expression. In Chinese, a language particularly rich in phonological symbolism, onomatopoeic words do not merely replicate sounds but also perform distinct syntactic functions. Their use extends beyond stylistic ornamentation, and they frequently operate as integral parts of grammatical structure. Chinese linguists have debated the precise classification of onomatopoeia within syntax. While some have considered them marginal, functioning only as stylistic devices, others have highlighted their ability to serve as full-fledged syntactic constituents. Building on Modern Chinese Grammar and supported by practical examples, this study examines the various syntactic positions that onomatopoeic words can assume. 1. Onomatopoeia as Adverbial and Predicate Modifier. One of the most common functions of onomatopoeia in Chinese is its use as an adverbial that modifies the predicate verb. In this role, the particle 地 is often used to connect the onomatopoeia to the predicate, though in colloquial contexts this particle may be omitted. 桌上的闹钟的嗒的嗒地在静夜里清脆地响着。 (The alarm clock on the table rang clearly in the quiet night, with the sound described by the onomatopoeia.) 抢叭了一声 这抢是朝天放的,为了吓跑围过来的狗熊。 (A sudden gunshot was heard, fired into the sky to frighten away the approaching bears.) In such examples, the sound does not simply accompany the verb but becomes an essential element of how the action is perceived and interpreted. 2. Onomatopoeia as Attribute. Onomatopoeia also appears in attributive constructions, where it modifies nouns. In such cases, the particle 的 is typically employed to link the onomatopoeia to the noun, adding vividness to the description. 我躺着,从船底潺潺的水声,知道船还在走着。 (While lying down, I realized the boat was still moving from the murmuring sound of the water beneath it.)
57 This usage highlights the descriptive capacity of onomatopoeia, which brings auditory imagery directly into the nominal phrase. 3. Onomatopoeia as Predicate. In certain contexts, onomatopoeia itself functions as the predicate. Here, the sound event is not merely a modifier but the central occurrence of the sentence. 她们轻轻划着船,船两边的水,哗,哗,哗。(They rowed the boat gently, while the water on both sides splashed rhythmically.) Such usage demonstrates the autonomy of onomatopoeic expressions in Chinese, showing that they can carry the predicative weight of a sentence. 4. Onomatopoeia as Complement. Onomatopoeic expressions often serve as complements, especially in resultative constructions. In these cases, they usually appear with the particle 的, emphasizing the sensory result of an action. 火车从这里经过的时候,窗户都被震得哗啦哗啦的。 (When the train passed by, the windows rattled noisily.) Here, the onomatopoeia intensifies the impact of the action, shifting focus from the event itself to its auditory effect. 5. Onomatopoeia as Subject. Although less common, onomatopoeia can also function as the subject of a sentence. When nominalized, a sound expression becomes the central entity of discussion. 自然喽,我的叽哩呱啦是出了名的,厂里谁不知道? (Naturally, my loud chatter is well known—who in the factory doesnʼt know it?) This rare function reflects the adaptability of onomatopoeia, which can transcend its imitative origins to occupy the role of subject in a clause. Onomatopoeia as an Independent Component. Onomatopoeia often appears as an independent component within discourse, typically marked off by punctuation or quotation marks. Such cases highlight the immediacy and autonomy of sound in narrative contexts. “笃!笃!笃!”声音那么沉闷,就同我的心情一样。(“Tok! Tok! Tok!” The sound was as dull as my mood.) Whether regarded as separate sentences or as sentence components, these forms emphasize how onomatopoeia integrates auditory perception into linguistic structure in ways that cannot be achieved by ordinary words. The syntactic diversity of onomatopoeia in Chinese illustrates its role as more than a stylistic device. Onomatopoeic words function as adverbials, attributes, predicates, complements, subjects, and even independent units. They bring immediacy to description, strengthen the connection between sound and meaning, and vividly convey sensory experiences within the structure of a sentence. From a cognitive perspective, onomatopoeia reflects the human capacity to map perception directly onto language. By integrating sound into grammar, Chinese demonstrates how syntax can accommodate sensory experience. The findings of this study highlight the importance of onomatopoeia in both theoretical linguistics and applied language studies, including second-language pedagogy. Future research could
58 expand this discussion to pragmatic functions and cross-linguistic comparisons, further clarifying the universal and language-specific roles of onomatopoeia.
