Mapping the Stars: A Bibliometric Analysis of IUCAA's Research Impact (1989–Present)

Sahu, Hemant Kumar

Abstract

This study presents a bibliometric analysis of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, from 1989 to the present. Drawing on data from IUCAA's Annual Reports, Khagol bulletin, NASA ADS, Scopus, and Web of Science, it examines over 4,200 publications and 62,000 citations to track research output, impact, and collaborations. IUCAA has shown a steady 6.8% annual growth in publications and holds an institutional h-index of 92. Thematic analysis highlights strengths in gravitational waves, dark matter, and space instrumentation, with increasing contributions to major missions such as LIGO-India and Aditya-L1. Notable faculty contributions include work by Prof. Jayant V. Narlikar (quasi-steady-state cosmology), Prof. T. Padmanabhan (dark energy), Prof. Somak Raychaudhury (dark matter in clusters), Prof. Tarun Souradeep (LIGO-India), and Prof. Durgesh Tripathi (SUIT on Aditya-L1). Infrastructure like the IUCAA Girawali Observatory and the SARATHI HPC cluster, which contributed 15% to LIGO's computational load, underpin this growth. Collaboration networks show 78% of publications involve international partners, such as ESA and Caltech, with strong national leadership in projects like AstroSat. The study underscores IUCAA's role as a model for research excellence through faculty leadership, strategic infrastructure, and global collaboration.
