Early-print-fragments-BOMPAC
Abstract
This dataset was created by the Books of the Medieval Parish Church (BOMPAC) project (2021–2025). The project systematically produced and edited metadata on medieval parchment fragments reused by the Swedish tax administration as covers for account booklets between c. 1540 and 1630. The dataset presented here focuses on fragments of incunabula and early sixteenth-century printed books. It includes all relevant fragments preserved in the National Library of Finland, Helsinki, as well as most surviving fragments of the Missale Aboense (Turku missal, 1488) found in other collections. The dataset was designed especially to study the fragments' reuse as covers of account booklets, and its structure reflects this purpose.

1 Readme: Early-Print-Frs-BOMPAC dataset This dataset was produced as part of the ERC-funded project BOMPAC (Books of the Medieval Parish Church, Grant number 948497), 2021–2025. Dataset DOI: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.17037953 Creators: Seppo Eskola (data curator) Susanna Rämö (data collection, data editing) Contributors: Jaakko Tahkokallio (PI, supervision of data creation) Maria von Hertzen (data editing) Notes on the present dataset: This dataset was created by the Books of the Medieval Parish Church (BOMPAC) project. The project has systematically produced and edited metadata on most medieval parchment fragments reused by the Swedish tax administration as soft covers for account booklets between c. Most fragments are preserved as loose leaves, but some Missale Aboense fragments survive in three bound copies "reconstructed" from former account covers (held by: National Library of Finland, Helsinki; Jyväskylä University Library; and the National Library of Sweden, Stockholm). In addition, the dataset includes one similar reconstructed and bound copy of the Manuale Aboense (1522), preserved in the National Library of Finland. Concerning the fragments bound as codices, it should be noted that their itemisation focused on identifying covers rather than fragments. Most fragments in the dataset remain uncatalogued, although systematically organised. The itemisation of the fragments was carried out by research assistant Susanna Rämö (MA), who also collected data on the early modern account markings found on the fragments. The data were then organised and edited by the contributors listed above. It should be emphasised that this dataset was compiled specifically to support research within the BOMPAC project; it represents research data rather than library catalogue data. The fragments listed come from the following archives and libraries: Kansalliskirjasto, Helsinki (National Library of Finland): 996 fragments Jyväskylän yliopiston kirjasto (Library of the University of Jyväskylä) 137 fragments Kungliga biblioteket, Stockholm (The National Library of Sweden) 95 fragments Kansallisarkisto, Helsinki (The National Archives of Finland) 1 fragment Total: 1229 fragments
2 Description of data: The dataset is provided both as a .csv and MS Excel file. They consist of a header row, 1,229 data rows, and fourty-three columns. Each data row represents a single fragment. The data columns are described below. Columns: Row_id Row numbering Fragment_number See below * Work Name of work Author Author of work Printer Name of printer Printed_in_century Century of printing Printed_in Year of printing Printed_in_end Later year of possible printing time frame Printed_in_comment Comments on previous General comments Any general comments Inc_or_print Division between incunabula and sixteenth-century prints Language Language Material Binary division between parchment and paper Category Division between liturgical and non-liturgical fragments Genre_or_type Genre or type of book Type_hierarchy_1 Book type categories Type_hierarchy_2 Book type categories Type_hierarchy_3 Book type categories Institution_abbreviation Holding institution abbreviation Institution Holding institution Fragment_signum_unofficial An unofficial shelfmark for the fragment based on the columns that follow Collection_1 Shelfmark information Collection_2 Shelfmark information Box Shelfmark information Protective_sheet Shelfmark information Quire Shelfmark information Page Shelfmark information Cover_in_unit Number of cover within box/sheet/etc. Cover_composition_1 See below ** Cover_composition_2 See below ** No_of_leaves Number of leaves No_of_leaves_comment Comments on previous Account_markings_presence Marked 'no' if no account markings are present Account_area Broader region of the place mentioned in account headline Account_province_simplified Province of the place mentioned in account headline

The numbering, however, follows the example of the system used by the Medeltida pergamentomslag database. The database refers to fragments with a number in one of two series, the first starting from 1 and the second from 20000. The fragments in this dataset have been given numbers starting from 50001. ** The Cover_composition columns describe the fragments as account covers. The first one labels the fragments as either 'covers', meaning the fragment constitutes a cover or the main part of one (e.g. front leaf) by itself, or 'non-covers', meaning the fragment is a lesser part of a cover (back leaf, narrow strip etc.). The second column then expands on this, labelling 'covers' as 'primary', if they constitute the main part of a cover but not the whole cover (otherwise field left empty), and 'noncovers' as 'non-primary' if they form a significant part of a cover (e.g. the back leaf) or 'support' if the fragment is merely a strip or other smaller piece (possibly used to, e.g., support a binding). *** The columns 'Bailiwick_nro' (1 & 2) refer to bailiwicks using the numbering system introduced in the classical work by J. A. Almquist Den civila lokalförvaltningen i Sverige 1523-1630: med särskild hänsyn till den kamerala indelningen, I-IV, (Stockholm 1917-1923). This work can be found online at BOMPAC's Doria site: https://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi-fe2022033026181. The second column provides secondary or possible alternative numbers if necessary.
4 List of datasets published by the BOMPAC project The BOMPAC project has produced several datasets on the Swedish-Finnish medieval fragment collections and related sources. The fragments are, for the most part, included in one of two databases: i) Medeltida pergamentomslag (MPO; https://sok.riksarkivet.se/mpo) of the Swedish National Archives and ii) Fragmenta membranea (FM; https://fragmenta.kansalliskirjasto.fi) of the Finnish National Library.
