1 Readme: Raw-metadata-BOMPAC dataset This dataset was produced as part of the ERC-funded project BOMPAC (Books of the Medieval Parish Church, Grant number 948497), 2021–2025. For the most part, these fragments are listed in either the Medeltida pergamentomslag (National Archives of Sweden) or the Fragmenta membranea (National Library of Finland) database. The databases can be found at https://sok.riksarkivet.se/mpo (MPO) and https://fragmenta.kansalliskirjasto.fi (FM). The present dataset contains the project’s research metadata in only lightly edited format. In many cases, the data is incomplete and a work-in-progress. It is nonetheless published here comprehensively to facilitate future research. The dataset consists of the following files (data files given both in .xlxs and .csv format): FM data: 1. More detailed descriptions are included further below or, for some files, in separate readme files. 1. Files concerning the Fragmenta membranea database The official Fragmenta membranea database list fragments only as reconstructed codices. The first dataset (FM-Mss-BOMPAC) follows this same structure, while expanding and enhancing the available metadata. Additionally, the dataset re-organises the uncatalogued part of the collection (319 DIG shelfmarks) into c. 250 reconstructions and provides them with new preliminary shelfmarks (format: F.m.Temp.XXX). For the second file (FM-Frs-BOMPAC), the project itemised each fragment in the FM collection and provided them with enhanced metadata through working on the fragments. The third file (FM-Institutional-Data) provides the institutional metadata of the FM collection as provided to the project by the National Library of Finland (in 2021). Finally, for FM, the fourth file (FM-Covers-and-Bailiffs-Records-BOMPAC) lists the connections between the FM fragments and the accounts they used to cover to the extent that the project was able to establish. 2. Files concerning the Medeltida pergamentomslag database Concerning the MPO, the project was first provided with the database’s institutional metadata by the National Archives of Sweden. This data was then reworked by Dr. Holger Kaasik with the aim of facilitating research on the MPO collection. This work produced the fifth file (MPO-Holger-Kaasikedit), and his work is described in detail in file six (MPO-Commentary-Holger-Kaasik). The table produced by Kaasik was then further worked on and expanded by the project, resulting in the seventh file (MPO-BOMPAC). 3. The Early-Prints-BOMPAC file Finally, the eighth file contains the project’s metadata on fragments of incunabula and earlysixteenth-century printed books. Descriptions file by file: 1. FM-Mss-BOMPAC See separate readme file. 2. FM-Frs-BOMPAC See separate readme file. 3. FM-Institutional-Data The institutional metadata of the FM database as provided in 2021. 3 4. FM-Covers-and-Bailiffs-Records-BOMPAC A data file with six columns (listed below) and 7,292 data rows. Each row refers to an account in the collection of early modern accounts at the Finnish National Archives (Voudintilit/Fogderäkenskaper). The account references are provided as numbers or as numbers with letters (usually referenced in literature as, e.g., “KA 1453”). For each account, the shelfmark of the corresponding fragment cover is provided (when known). The identifications are not always certain, and any possible alternative suggestions are provided in the final column. MPO-Holger-Kaasik-edit For a description of the creation of this file, see the next one. 6. MPO-Commentary-Holger-Kaasik (text) A detailed description of the process of re-working the institutional MPO metadata resulting in the previous file. 7. MPO-BOMPAC A dataset based on expanding the data in MPO-Holger-Kaasik-edit. A few dozen columns have been added and are marked as “GEN II” on row 1. Many of the added columns only simplify data in another column. The main additions are the “Account history” and “Row control” sections. The ‘Account history’ section provides data on the early modern reuse of the fragments. This data derives from several sources, including the MPO, manual examination of fragments, and two seventeenth-century catalogues on the accounts the fragments cover. These catalogues provide information on the reuse of the fragments as well as the past archival provenance of the accounts (and fragments). They are preserved at the Swedish National Archives, see “Stockholm, Riksarkivet, Kammarens ämbetsarkiv, D II Ser I:1” and “Stockholm, Riksarkivet, Kammarens ämbetsarkiv, D II Ser I:4”. The ‘bailiwick’ column refers to bailiwicks using the numbering system introduced in the classical work by J. A. Almquist Den civila lokalförvaltningen i Sverige 1523-1630: med särskild hänsyn till den kamerala indelningen, I-IV, (Stockholm 1917-1923). The ‘Row control’ columns enable the exclusion of superfluous datarows which are nonetheless included for clarity. These include, e.g., double or triple entries of a single fragment. 8. Early-Prints-BOMPAC This data has been published previously by the project, as printed fragments are a category that sometimes warrants being considered on its own. The data is, however, also included here to provide the projects basic data comprehensively in one place.
