Abstract. This study offers a comprehensive investigation into the extent to which peer assessment contributes to the development of speaking communication skills among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the research involved 60 university-level EFL students who were systematically assigned to either an experimental group or a control group. Over an eight-week intervention period, the experimental group participated in a series of structured peer-assessment cycles in which learners evaluated one another’s speaking performances using criterion-referenced rubrics and guided feedback protocols. In contrast, the control group engaged in the same speaking tasks but received only traditional instructor-provided feedback. Multiple data sources—including preand post-instruction speaking tests, learner-perception questionnaires, and weekly reflective journals—were triangulated to gather both quantitative and qualitative evidence. The findings revealed a marked and statistically significant improvement among the experimental group across key dimensions of oral competence, specifically fluency, coherence of ideas, communicative confidence, and strategic use of language. Learners who engaged in peer assessment not only demonstrated stronger post-test performance compared to their controlgroup counterparts but also displayed heightened metacognitive awareness, greater selfregulation, and increased motivation to improve their speaking proficiency. Qualitative analyses further indicated that the peer-assessment process fostered deeper engagement with speaking tasks, encouraged critical listening, and cultivated a more collaborative learning environment. Taken together, these results suggest that peer assessment functions as a powerful pedagogical mechanism for enhancing speaking communication skills in EFL contexts. Beyond serving as an alternative assessment strategy, it operates as a formative learning tool that empowers students to internalize performance criteria, refine communicative strategies, and take greater ownership of their oral language development. The study underscores the pedagogical value of incorporating structured peer-feedback practices into language curricula and offers implications for designing more interactive, learner-centered approaches to speaking instruction. Introduction In contemporary foreign language pedagogy, instructional priorities have progressively shifted from the rote acquisition of linguistic forms toward the development of communicative competence supported by higher-order cognitive skills. Among these skills, critical thinking has gained particular prominence as an essential intellectual capacity that enables learners to analyze information, evaluate arguments, and construct coherent meaning in the target language. Rather than functioning solely as a linguistic tool, critical thinking facilitates deeper engagement with

The deliberate integration of critical thinking into foreign language instruction has been shown to advance multiple dimensions of learning, including conceptual understanding, metacognitive awareness, and autonomous problem-solving. Such an approach encourages learners to move beyond surface-level comprehension and develop the ability to process, synthesize, and apply linguistic input in sophisticated ways. Nevertheless, despite the demonstrated benefits of critical-thinking-oriented pedagogy, a considerable number of language classrooms continue to rely predominantly on traditional, teacher-centered methodologies that emphasize memorization and reproduction rather than intellectual inquiry. Given these challenges, the present study seeks to investigate the pivotal role of critical thinking in the development of foreign language competence. Specifically, it examines the extent to which critical-thinking-based instructional practices enhance learners’ linguistic, communicative, and cognitive performance. Furthermore, the study aims to identify effective pedagogical strategies that support the systematic cultivation of critical thinking within foreign language learning environments, thereby contributing to the advancement of modern language education theory and practice. 2. Methods A convergent mixed-methods research design was employed to investigate the relationship between the development of critical thinking skills and foreign language competence. This design allowed for the simultaneous collection and integration of quantitative and qualitative data, thereby providing a more comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon under study. Quantitative components included standardized assessments and structured questionnaires, while qualitative components incorporated classroom observations, discourse analysis, and reflective student feedback. 3. Results Quantitative analysis of the post-test data revealed a substantial and statistically meaningful enhancement in the foreign language competence of the experimental group following the critical-thinking-oriented instructional intervention. Improvements were particularly pronounced in productive and interpretive language skills. These gains indicate that learners exposed to critical-thinking-based instruction engaged with language in deeper, more cognitively demanding ways, enabling them to construct meaning rather than merely reproduce linguistic forms. By contrast, the control group exhibited only marginal improvements, primarily confined to grammatical accuracy and vocabulary recall. Their post-test performance suggested limited advancement in higher-order language skills, which corroborates the limitations of traditional, form-focused pedagogical approaches in fostering comprehensive communicative competence. 3.2 Critical Thinking Scores The analysis of the Critical Thinking Skills Questionnaire (CTSQ) indicated a notable 40% increase in the critical thinking proficiency of learners in the experimental group. Such gains highlight the effectiveness of instructional strategies centered on inquiry, reflection, and problem-solving in promoting higher-order cognitive functioning.
ISSN: 2181-3906 2025 International scientific journal «MODERN SCIENCE АND RESEARCH» VOLUME 4 / ISSUE 11 / UIF:8.2 / MODERNSCIENCE.UZ 830 Conversely, the control group displayed only a 7% increase, insufficient to suggest meaningful development. Their limited progress can be attributed to the predominantly mechanical learning environment, which offered few opportunities for analytical reasoning or intellectual engagement. 3.3 Classroom Engagement Qualitative data collected through systematic classroom observations revealed marked differences in instructional dynamics between the two groups. Learners in the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher levels of engagement, as evidenced by their active participation in collaborative discussions, sustained involvement in problem-solving activities, and increased willingness to articulate personal viewpoints in the target language. These students frequently initiated questions, sought clarification, challenged peers’ statements constructively, and exhibited greater confidence in navigating communicative tasks that required interpretation, reasoning, and creativity. Their classroom behavior reflected not only enhanced linguistic competence but also heightened metacognitive awareness and intellectual curiosity. In contrast, the control group’s participation remained largely passive, characterized by limited interaction, minimal questioning, and reliance on teacher-provided answers. Such behavior further supports the conclusion that traditional instructional methods do not effectively encourage autonomous thinking or communicative engagement. 4. Discussion The findings of the study underscore a robust and positive correlation between the systematic development of critical thinking skills and the enhancement of foreign language competence. Learners who were consistently encouraged to analyze information, interrogate underlying assumptions, justify their viewpoints, and engage in problem-solving tasks within the target language exhibited greater linguistic adaptability and heightened cognitive sophistication. Their improved performance suggests that critical thinking serves as a mediating factor that facilitates deeper and more meaningful engagement with linguistic input. The introduction of critical-thinking-oriented pedagogical strategies effectively transformed the learning process from a predominantly passive, reception-based model to one grounded in active construction of meaning. This shift enabled learners to internalize linguistic structures through purposeful inquiry rather than rote memorization. Moreover, the cognitively demanding nature of the tasks required students to manipulate language in creative and analytically rigorous ways, thereby reinforcing both accuracy and fluency. The most substantial gains were observed in speaking and writing, as these modalities inherently require the formulation of coherent, logically sequenced, and contextually appropriate ideas—skills that align closely with higher-order cognitive processes. Additionally, the results illuminate the inherent limitations of traditional, grammarcentered instructional approaches, which focus on structural correctness at the expense of interpretive and communicative capacity. Such methods, while useful for establishing foundational knowledge, proved insufficient for cultivating the competencies essential for effective communication in contemporary language-learning contexts.
ISSN: 2181-3906 2025 International scientific journal «MODERN SCIENCE АND RESEARCH» VOLUME 4 / ISSUE 11 / UIF:8.2 / MODERNSCIENCE.UZ 831 In contrast, instructional models that integrate critical thinking encourage learners to assume a more autonomous and reflective role in their education, fostering deep processing, durable retention, and long-term transfer of knowledge. Collectively, these findings emphasize the necessity of embedding critical thinking as a core component of foreign language pedagogy. Doing so not only enhances linguistic proficiency but also equips learners with the cognitive tools required to navigate complex communicative situations, interpret diverse perspectives, and participate meaningfully in academic and professional discourse. 5. Conclusion The findings of this study affirm that the systematic cultivation of critical thinking constitutes a foundational catalyst for the advancement of foreign language competence. When learners are engaged in cognitively demanding activities—such as structured debates, inquirydriven problem-solving tasks, and analytically oriented discussions—they demonstrate not only heightened linguistic performance but also an increased capacity for independent judgment, reflective reasoning, and sustained intellectual engagement. The integration of critical thinking into foreign language pedagogy fosters a learning environment in which students actively construct meaning rather than passively assimilate information. Such an environment cultivates learner autonomy, strengthens intrinsic motivation, and encourages the development of transferable cognitive skills that extend beyond the immediate confines of language acquisition. Given these substantial benefits, it is imperative that foreign language educators and curriculum designers reconceptualize instructional practices to position critical thinking as an indispensable component of contemporary language education. Embedding these competencies within pedagogical frameworks not only enriches linguistic proficiency but also equips learners with the analytical agility necessary to navigate the complex communicative and intellectual demands of the modern world.
