Particularly in tertiary institutions, the integration of AI technologies presents new paradigms for enhancing learning outcomes and academic performance. In Nigeria, where higher education faces challenges such as overcrowded classrooms, inadequate teaching resources, and varied student learning styles, AI promises innovative solutions to improve educational quality and accessibility (Igbokwe, 2020). This literature review aims to explore the integration of AI in Nigerian tertiary institutions, examining its influence on learning outcomes from 2018 to 2025. The landscape of education in Nigeria has experienced significant reforms and changes in the past decade, driven by both local and global demands for improved educational practices. Tertiary institutions are tasked with producing graduates equipped with relevant skills to thrive in a competitive job market. As such, the adoption of AI technologies can potentially overhaul traditional teaching methodologies, making learning more interactive, personalized, and effective. For instance, intelligent tutoring systems and adaptive learning platforms allow for differentiated instruction tailored to individual student needs, thereby enhancing learning outcomes (Olubunmi & Akinsete, 2021). A major driving force behind the integration of AI in education is its capacity to collect and analyze vast amounts of data. Educators can use AI-driven analytics tools to monitor student progress and tailor interventions accordingly (Gonzalez, 2022). This data-driven approach not only fosters a deeper understanding of student behavior and learning patterns but also leads to better decision-making in pedagogical strategies. Consequently, the teacher's role evolves from being the primary source of knowledge to a facilitator of learning experiences, encouraging active participation and engagement from students. However, despite the promising prospects of AI integration, several challenges must be addressed to fully realize its potential. Among these challenges are infrastructural deficits, which include limited access to reliable internet services and inadequate technological facilities in many International Journal of Research (IJR) e-ISSN: 2348-6848 p-ISSN: 2348-795X Vol. 12 Issue 12 December 2025 Received: 12 November 2025 3 Revised: 27 November 2025 Accepted: 01December 2025 Copyright  authors 2025 DOI: HTTPS://DOI.ORG/10.5281/ZENODO.17778997 Nigerian institutions (Akanbi, 2019). Furthermore, the digital divide remains a significant barrier, with disparities in access to technology and digital literacy skills amongst students and educators. As Such, policies must also be put in place to ensure equitable access to AI resources, minimizing the risk of deepening existing educational inequalities (Odufuwa, 2020). While the benefits of integrating AI into Nigerian tertiary education are evident, the ethical implications surrounding its use also warrant discussion. Concerns about data privacy, security, and the potential for bias in AI algorithms are crucial elements that must be considered during implementation (Abubakar & Eze, 2021). Institutions need to develop robust frameworks to guide the ethical use of AI, ensuring that student data is protected, and AI systems are transparent and fair. In light of these considerations, several studies have highlighted the relationship between AI integration and improved learning outcomes in educational settings. Research by Ogundipe et al. (2021) found that students exposed to AI-driven educational tools demonstrated higher levels of engagement and improved academic performance compared to their peers in traditional learning environments. Similarly, a recent study by Uche & Ogbonna (2022) indicated that institutions that implemented AI-based assessment tools observed enhancements in formative and summative evaluations, leading to more accurate representations of student learning. Given the emerging body of literature on AI in education, this review seeks to provide a comprehensive analysis of existing research, identifying key findings, trends, and gaps in knowledge regarding the integration of AI in Nigerian tertiary institutions. The scope of this review will include studies published between 2018 and 2025, thereby capturing the most recent advancements and insights in the field. The potential of AI to revolutionize learning experiences in Nigerian tertiary institutions is immense. While challenges such as infrastructural limitations and ethical concerns exist, the integration of AI presents a significant opportunity for enhancing educational outcomes. This literature review will systematically evaluate the existing studies on AI adoption in Nigeria's International Journal of Research (IJR) e-ISSN: 2348-6848 p-ISSN: 2348-795X Vol. 12 Issue 12 December 2025 Received: 12 November 2025 4 Revised: 27 November 2025 Accepted: 01December 2025 Copyright  authors 2025 DOI: HTTPS://DOI.ORG/10.5281/ZENODO.17778997 higher education sector and its implications for learning outcomes, providing insight for policymakers, educators, and researchers interested in the future of education in the country.
