next week in OpenAlex: repositories treated a primary data sources and new works minted even when not found in other sources
collaboration with repositories ●individual collaborations ○e.g., HAL, Denmark Research Portal ●public ‘pipesʼ to hook OAIPMH into ○follow OpenAire guidelines for repository managers ■https://openaire-guidelines-for-literature-repository-manag ers.readthedocs.io/ ○Clearly differentiate scholarly vs non-scholarly content ○internal QAQC will go a long way to helping others use your metadata

What do researchers want? (Bjoern Brembs, neurobiologist - COAR Annual Meeting 2022)
“Each individual repository is of limited value for research: the real power of Open Access lies in the possibility of connecting and tying together repositories, which is why we need interoperability. Interoperability allows us to exploit today’s computational power so that we can aggregate, data mine, create new tools and services, and generate new knowledge from repository content.‘’ [COAR manifesto: The case for interoperability of Open Access repositories, 2011] Confederation of Open Access Repositories
Discovery - searching across all repositories to find relevant content What are these overlay services? Monitoring / Analytics - tracking policy compliance Linking - connecting related content across the network Publish, Review, Curate - connecting with open peer reviews 1st generation 2nd generation
And… the elephant in the room Artificial Intelligence / machine learning - plain language summary, multilingual search… “the sky is the limit”? 3rd generation
Dealing with Bad Bots There are a growing number of aggressive crawlers interacting with repositories. On July 15, 2025, COAR launched the Dealing with Bots Task Force in order to help the repository community navigate this rapidly evolving landscape and develop solutions that allow repositories to remain as open as possible.
AI and Open Science Articulating our vision and community norms for the use of AI on repository collections.
Strengthening repositories by working with regional partners Good curation practices = High quality value-added services COAR Controlled Vocabularies (e.g. Resource Type) COAR Community Framework for Good Practices in Repositories COAR PIDs Task Force for interoperability across PIDs
