This extended paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the phraseological representation of the concepts “patience” in English and “sabr” in Uzbek linguoculture. Phraseological units, including idioms, proverbs, stable collocations, and culturally embedded expressions, are examined through cognitive, linguacultural, and comparative perspectives. The expanded study highlights how English speakers conceptualize patience through secular, psychological, and practical metaphors, whereas Uzbek phraseology frames “sabr” as a moral, spiritual, and religious value deeply rooted in Islamic norms. The findings demonstrate that phraseological units serve as key linguistic markers that reveal cultural models of thinking, moral expectations, and social behaviors associated with patience. Introduction Understanding how abstract human qualities are encoded in language is central to cognitive linguistics and conceptual analysis. One such universal concept is patience. Although recognized across cultures as a virtue, the specific linguistic and cultural representations of patience differ profoundly. The English concept “patience” primarily emphasizes emotional regulation, time management, and rational behavior. Meanwhile, the Uzbek concept “sabr” holds a sacred place in moral and religious discourse, reflecting centuries of Islamic influence and traditional value systems. Phraseological units serve as culturally patterned linguistic tools that store collective knowledge, beliefs, and emotional attitudes. They offer a valuable corpus for exploring how different cultures interpret, symbolize, and evaluate the concept of patience. This expanded paper analyzes idioms, proverbs, metaphorical expressions, and culturally rich sayings related to patience in both English and Uzbek languages. 2. Theoretical Background Phraseology is defined as the area of linguistics that studies stable word combinations whose meanings cannot be determined by analyzing the meanings of the individual components. According to cognitive linguists, phraseological units are “verbalized frames” that reveal culturally shaped concepts. The relationship between culture and cognition is particularly visible in idiomatic expressions, where figurative meaning reflects social norms and worldview. Concepts like “patience” and “sabr” function as mental structures that integrate several layers of meaning: emotional, social, ethical, psychological, and spiritual. The English concept is largely secular, whereas the Uzbek concept incorporates religious doctrine, making the concept’s phraseological representation richer in moral content. 3. These figurative structures reflect Western patterns of thinking, where patience is seen as a psychological skill rather than a spiritual duty. 3.1 Idioms and Fixed Expressions A number of idiomatic expressions express patience: • “to have the patience of a saint” – extreme patience, religiously inspired but used secularly. • “keep your cool” – emotional control metaphor. • “take your time” – emphasizes the absence of haste. • “hang in there” – encourages perseverance. • “hold your horses” – a historical metaphor meaning “wait”. These expressions show that English culture values emotional regulation, rational decision-making, and calmness. 3.2 Proverbs and Sayings Proverbs play an important role in encoding culturally shared moral lessons. Some commonly used English proverbs include: • “Patience is a virtue.” • “Good things come to those who wait.” • “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” • “Slow and steady wins the race.” These proverbs focus on gradual progress, long-term success, and disciplined behavior. They reflect a practical worldview where patience is instrumental for achievement. 3.3 Conceptual Metaphors in English Cognitive metaphor theory suggests that complex concepts are understood through simpler, concrete images. The key metaphors for patience in English include: • PATIENCE AS CALMNESS • PATIENCE AS ENDURANCE • WAITING AS A TEST • TIME AS A RESOURCE These metaphors collectively portray patience as a psychological capacity that contributes to personal and professional success. 4. Phraseological Expression of “Sabr” in Uzbek Unlike the secular orientation of English expressions, Uzbek phraseology embeds patience deeply in moral, spiritual, and religious contexts. The concept of “sabr” is central in Islamic ethics and is frequently mentioned in religious texts, shaping how speakers understand and verbalize patience. 4.1 Idioms and Expressions Examples of Uzbek idioms expressing “sabr” include: • “sabr kosasi to‘ldi” – patience has reached its limit. • “sabr qilmoq” – to endure with dignity. • “sabrning tagi – sari” – patience leads to goodness or reward. • “sabr-toqat” – compound emphasizing deep endurance. These expressions highlight the spiritual and emotional depth of patience in Uzbek culture. Comparative Analysis A comparative study reveals notable differences: • English phraseology emphasizes emotional control, rationality, and time management. • Uzbek phraseology frames patience as a religious obligation, moral virtue, and spiritual achievement. • English expressions are mostly secular, pragmatic, and based on everyday experience. • Uzbek expressions are deeply moralized, often grounded in divine expectations and the promise of spiritual reward. Despite these differences, both cultures valorize patience as essential to personal growth and social harmony. 6. Conclusion Phraseological expressions of “patience” and “sabr” represent culturally embedded values and cognitive models. English expressions frame patience as psychological endurance, while Uzbek expressions conceptualize it as a sacred moral virtue.
