"LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF PRECEDENT UNITS IN UZBEK AND ENGLISH LITERARY DISCOURSE AND THE STUDY OF THEIR LINGUISTIC FEATURES."

Mallayeva Zebokhon

Abstract

Abstract. This research investigates precedent units within Uzbek and English literary discourse, with the objective of examining their structural, semantic, and functional properties. Precedent units comprising proverbs, aphorisms, citations, and culturally entrenched expressions significantly shape the stylistic and pragmatic dimensions of literary texts. Through a comparative lens, the study explores the influence of cultural, historical, and linguistic factors on the formation, deployment, and interpretation of these units across the two languages. Emphasis is placed on the role of precedent units in intertextuality, authorial voice, and reader engagement, as well as their contribution to textual coherence, stylistic variation, and the implicit transmission of cultural meaning. Methodologically, the study integrates descriptive linguistics, discourse analysis, and contextual evaluation to provide a comprehensive understanding of precedent units as both linguistic and cultural constructs. Results indicate that, although many precedent units fulfill universal communicative and expressive functions, their linguistic realization, stylistic application, and cultural significance exhibit notable differences between Uzbek and English literary contexts. Additionally, the study underscores the pedagogical value of recognizing and analyzing precedent units in literature and language instruction, highlighting their potential to enhance interpretive competence, intercultural sensitivity, and the ability to discern stylistically marked forms.

INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC AND PRACTICAL CONFERENCE “INTEGRATION OF MODERN LINGUISTICS WITH SCIENCE, EDUCATION, AND PRACTICE IN THE PROCESS OF GLOBALIZATION: NEW APPROACHES, OPPORTUNITIES, AND CHALLENGES”, DECEMBER 4, 2025 178 ценность распознавания и анализа прецедентных единиц при преподавании литературы и языка, стимулируя развитие интерпретативной компетенции, межкультурной чувствительности и способности выявлять стилистически маркированные формы. Ushbu tadqiqot o‘zbek va ingliz badiiy diskurslarida uchraydigan pretsedent birliklarning lisoniy tahliliga bag‘ishlanib, ularning tarkibiy, semantik va funksional xususiyatlarini o‘rganishni maqsad qiladi. Maqollar, aforizmlar, iqtiboslar hamda madaniy jihatdan shakllangan iboralarni o‘z ichiga olgan pretsedent birliklar badiiy matnlarning uslubiy va pragmatik xususiyatlarini shakllantirishda muhim rol o‘ynaydi. Tadqiqotning qiyosiy yondashuvi ushbu birliklarning ikki tildagi shakllanishi, qo‘llanilishi va talqiniga madaniy, tarixiy va lingvistik omillar qanday ta’sir qilishini aniqlash imkonini beradi. Shuningdek, ushbu birliklarning intertekstual bog‘liqlikni yuzaga keltirishdagi o‘rni, mualliflik uslubini ifodalashdagi ahamiyati, o‘quvchining idrokiga ta’siri, matnning bog‘liqligi, uslubiy rangbaranglik va yashirin madaniy mazmunlarni yetkazishdagi funksiyalari alohida e’tiborga olinadi. Tadqiqot metodologiyasi deskriptiv lingvistika, diskurs tahlili va kontekstual yondashuvni birlashtirgan holda, pretsedent birliklarni til va madaniyat fenomeni sifatida har tomonlama o‘rganishga xizmat qiladi. Natijalarga ko‘ra, pretsedent birliklarning ko‘pchiligi universal kommunikativ va ekspressiv vazifalarni bajarsa-da, ularning til vositalari orqali ifodalanishi, uslubiy qo‘llanilishi va madaniy ahamiyati o‘zbek va ingliz adabiy diskurslari o‘rtasida sezilarli darajada farqlanadi. Shuningdek, tadqiqot pretsedent birliklarni tahlil qilishning adabiyot va til o‘qitishdagi pedagogik ahamiyatini ta’kidlab, interpretativ kompetensiya, madaniyatlararo savodxonlik va uslubiy belgilangan birliklarni aniqlash ko‘nikmalarini rivojlantirishga xizmat qilishini ko‘rsatadi. Kalit so’zlar: badiiy iqtiboslar, uslubiy tahlil, madaniyatlararo taqqoslash, figurativ til, matnning bog‘liqligi, The study of precedent units in literary discourse plays a significant role in revealing the cultural, linguistic, and ideological layers embedded in texts. Precedent units such as proverbs, aphorisms, quotations, and culturally fixed expressions serve not only as linguistic markers but also as carriers of collective memory and cultural experience. According to N. Mahmudov, precedent expressions function as “madaniy kodlar” (cultural codes) that activate the reader’s prior knowledge and ensure interpretative depth in literary communication. Similarly, American scholar A. Wierzbicka emphasizes that culturally rooted expressions reflect the “shared cultural scripts” of a community, shaping how meaning is constructed and interpreted in discourse. In Uzbek literary discourse, precedent units are often employed to reinforce national identity, moral values, and philosophical reflections. For example, the commonly used proverb “Yaxshilik qil — dengizga ot, baliq bilmasa ham, Haligim biladi” carries ethical implications about altruism and divine justice. In comparison, a similar moral message appears in English literature through expressions like “What goes around comes around”, which reflects the principle of moral reciprocity. Although both units convey comparable ethical ideas, the Uzbek expression is more explicitly tied to religious and cultural beliefs, whereas the English version is more secular and universal. Another example involves literary quotations frequently used as precedent references. In Uzbek literature, Alisher Navoiy’s line “Har kimki, yomonlik qilsa — öziga qaytar” is often INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC AND PRACTICAL CONFERENCE “INTEGRATION OF MODERN LINGUISTICS WITH SCIENCE, EDUCATION, AND PRACTICE IN THE PROCESS OF GLOBALIZATION: NEW APPROACHES, OPPORTUNITIES, AND CHALLENGES”, DECEMBER 4, 2025 179 invoked to discuss justice and the consequences of wrongdoing. In English literary tradition, Shakespeare’s phrase “The evil that men do lives after them” serves a similar interpretative function. However, as noted by M. Bakhtin, precedent units operate dialogically, meaning their significance changes depending on the cultural and historical context in which they are re-used. Thus, while both quotations deal with the perpetuation of wrongdoing, the Navoiian expression emphasizes individual moral responsibility, whereas Shakespeare’s line highlights the enduring impact of human actions on society. From a structural perspective, Uzbek precedent units tend to be metaphorically rich and rhythmically shaped, reflecting the poetic nature of classical Uzbek literature. For instance, the phrase “Ko‘ngil ko‘zi ochiq bo‘lsa, dunyo ravshan” employs metaphor (heart’s eye) to express spiritual insight. In English, expressions like “The mind’s eye” used by Shakespeare function similarly, but the metaphor carries a more cognitive, rather than spiritual, nuance. As scholar George Lakoff notes, metaphors in different languages reveal distinct conceptual systems; therefore, even structurally parallel expressions may reflect diverse cultural worldviews. Functionally, precedent units in Uzbek literary texts often appear in dialogues or narrative commentary to guide the reader toward culturally preferred interpretations. In contrast, English literary discourse tends to use precedent expressions for irony, intertextuality, or philosophical emphasis. For example, Charles Dickens frequently uses biblical references to criticize social injustice, while Uzbek writers like Abdulla Qodiriy integrate historical and folkloric precedent units to evoke national memory and cultural continuity. Furthermore, the interpretative process of precedent units differs across the two languages. In Uzbek discourse, understanding such expressions often presupposes knowledge of folklore, Sufi philosophy, and historical figures. English precedent units, however, require familiarity with biblical texts, classical Greek literature, or canonical English works such as Shakespeare or Milton. As E. Hirsch argues, comprehension of culturally rooted expressions depends on the reader’s “cultural literacy,” without which the deeper layers of meaning remain inaccessible. Another important dimension is the cultural background needed for interpretation. In Uzbek precedent units, understanding often requires familiarity with local folklore, Islamic philosophy, and historical texts. For example, the widespread reference to “Majnun va Layli” in Uzbek literature carries connotations of divine love, madness, and spiritual sacrifice. Meanwhile, in English discourse, references to “Romeo and Juliet” symbolize tragic love rooted in family conflict. Although both pairs represent legendary lovers, their symbolic meanings differ: Uzbek tradition emphasizes mystical devotion, whereas English tradition stresses emotional and social tragedy. This supports Hirsch’s theory of “cultural literacy,” which posits that understanding culturally embedded expressions demands background knowledge that extends beyond linguistic competence. Additionally, semantic comparison shows that Uzbek precedent units often convey collectivist, moral, and spiritual values, while English units tend to highlight individual experience, rational reflection, or universal human conditions. For instance, the Uzbek proverb “Ko‘r-ko‘rona ketgan - yo‘l yutadi” conveys trust in fate and perseverance, whereas the English expression “Fortune favors the bold” foregrounds personal initiative and courage. Though both emphasize outcomes, their underlying ideologies differ—Uzbek texts value patience and divine providence, while English texts privilege individual agency. Scholars such as Claire Kramsch INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC AND PRACTICAL CONFERENCE “INTEGRATION OF MODERN LINGUISTICS WITH SCIENCE, EDUCATION, AND PRACTICE IN THE PROCESS OF GLOBALIZATION: NEW APPROACHES, OPPORTUNITIES, AND CHALLENGES”, DECEMBER 4, 2025 180 argue that such culturally loaded expressions serve as symbolic resources that shape identity and worldview in language communities. Precedent quotations in both languages demonstrate significant intertextual variation. In Uzbek literature, lines from Navoiy, Furqat, or Cho‘lpon appear as authoritative cultural markers that reinforce philosophical or moral points. In English literature, citations from Shakespeare, Milton, or the Bible serve a similar function but often carry rhetorical, dramatic, or ideological connotations. For example, the Uzbek phrase “Adolat - davlatning tayanchi” from classical moral discourse aligns with the English biblical statement “Righteousness exalteth a nation.” Both reflect ethical governance, yet Uzbek discourse emphasizes state stability, while English discourse stresses moral virtue. Overall, the comparative analysis shows that while Uzbek and English precedent units may share universal communicative and expressive functions, their linguistic realization, cultural resonance, and pragmatic uses differ considerably. The integration of these units enriches literary texts by enhancing stylistic diversity, reinforcing intertextual connections, and deepening the reader’s interpretative engagement. Additionally, as scholars such as Kramsch note, examining culturally loaded language elements contributes greatly to developing intercultural competence in learners. REFERENCES 1. Iqbolxon Axmedov.
