Abstract

Phraseology plays a significant role in language teaching and applied linguistics because it focuses on fixed expressions, idioms, collocations, and formulaic sequences that shape communicative competence. Understanding phraseological units helps learners grasp authentic language use, reduce misunderstandings, and develop fluency in both spoken and written communication. Applied linguistics views phraseology as essential for vocabulary development, discourse processing, and language assessment. Integrating phraseological instruction enhances learners’ cultural awareness and pragmatic skills, making language acquisition more natural, meaningful, and contextually appropriate for real-world communication.

INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC AND PRACTICAL CONFERENCE “INTEGRATION OF MODERN LINGUISTICS WITH SCIENCE, EDUCATION, AND PRACTICE IN THE PROCESS OF GLOBALIZATION: NEW APPROACHES, OPPORTUNITIES, AND CHALLENGES”, DECEMBER 4, 2025 685 Phraseology has long been acknowledged as a fundamental component of linguistic knowledge, yet only in recent decades has it received systematic attention in language teaching and applied linguistics. As researchers have increasingly recognized the formulaic nature of language, phraseology has emerged as a crucial element in understanding how learners acquire and use language in real communicative contexts. 1 Phraseological units—idioms, collocations, proverbs, phrasal verbs, and other fixed or semi-fixed expressions—represent a significant portion of everyday discourse. Their mastery is essential for fluency, naturalness, and pragmatic appropriateness. In applied linguistics, phraseology contributes to multiple areas of research, including corpus linguistics, psycholinguistics, lexicography, and language assessment. Corpus-based studies have revealed that natural language relies heavily on repeated chunks rather than isolated words. Native speakers store and retrieve many multi-word units holistically, which increases processing speed and enhances communicative efficiency. For language learners, this means that understanding phraseological patterns is key to developing automaticity and avoiding the unnatural or literal translations that often arise when focusing solely on individual vocabulary items. The role of phraseology in vocabulary acquisition is especially significant. Traditional vocabulary instruction often emphasizes single-word learning, which limits learners’ ability to use language idiomatically. A phraseological approach, on the other hand, exposes learners to collocations such as “make a decision,” “heavy traffic,” or “strong argument,” which cannot always be predicted by grammar rules. These combinations make language richer, more precise, and more contextually appropriate. 2 Research in applied linguistics shows that teaching collocations accelerates vocabulary development and supports productive skills such as speaking and writing. In communicative language teaching, phraseology enhances both fluency and accuracy. Fluency develops when learners can rely on prefabricated chunks that allow them to speak smoothly without pausing for grammatical processing. Accuracy improves because phraseological units contain built-in grammatical structures. For example, teaching expressions like “Would you mind…?” or “I’m looking forward to…” provides learners with ready-made frames that reinforce grammatical patterns and facilitate polite, pragmatically appropriate communication. Phraseology also plays a crucial role in pragmatics. Idioms and fixed expressions often carry cultural meanings that are not directly reflected in their literal structure. Expressions such as “break the ice,” “spill the beans,” or “the ball is in your court” require not only linguistic understanding but also cultural knowledge. Learners unfamiliar with these expressions may misinterpret or fail to comprehend them, leading to communication breakdowns. Integrating phraseology into lessons therefore helps students understand idiomatic language, humor, and figurative meanings embedded in cultural context. 3 In applied linguistics research, phraseology is linked to language processing models. Psycholinguistic studies suggest that formulaic sequences reduce cognitive load during speech 1 Lewis, M. (1993). The Lexical Approach. Language Teaching Publications. P-19 2 Sinclair, J. (1991). When learners recognize multi-word units as single chunks, they process language more efficiently. This supports second language acquisition theories that emphasize the importance of input frequency, pattern recognition, and usage-based learning. Instructional strategies for teaching phraseology include corpus-based activities, lexical notebooks, phrase banks, collocation dictionaries, and data-driven learning. Corpus tools allow students to observe authentic usage patterns, identify frequent combinations, and analyze contexts. The lexical approach, introduced by Michael Lewis, places phraseology at the heart of language pedagogy, emphasizing that language consists of meaningful chunks rather than isolated words. Classroom activities may involve matching collocations, completing idiomatic expressions, analyzing discourse for formulaic sequences, and using chunks in role-plays or writing tasks. Technology further strengthens phraseological instruction. Digital corpora, concordancers, and online collocation tools allow learners to explore language patterns independently. Language-learning applications now incorporate phraseological units in vocabulary banks, enabling students to practice chunks through spaced repetition and contextual examples. Applied linguistics research continues to explore how artificial intelligence can personalize phraseological learning based on learners’ needs. 4 Another important dimension is assessment. Evaluating phraseological competence has become essential for rating speaking and writing proficiency. Examiners often consider the naturalness and appropriateness of the expressions learners use. Candidates who employ a range of collocations and idioms usually demonstrate higher proficiency levels, as phraseological richness reflects advanced control of language structures. Phraseology bridges linguistic theory and pedagogy by highlighting the holistic nature of language and its real communicative use. By integrating phraseological units into teaching practices, educators can help learners achieve fluency, cultural awareness, and communicative competence that closely resemble native-like usage. In applied linguistics, phraseology continues to deepen our understanding of how language is structured, processed, and acquired, making it an indispensable component of modern language education. CONCLUSION. . Phraseology plays a central role in language teaching and applied linguistics because it reflects the natural, formulaic, and culturally embedded nature of authentic communication. Teaching idioms, collocations, and fixed expressions supports learners’ fluency, accuracy, and pragmatic awareness. Applied linguistics demonstrates that phraseology improves vocabulary acquisition, enhances processing efficiency, and strengthens communicative competence. Integrating phraseological instruction ensures that language learning becomes more meaningful, culturally relevant, and aligned with how real language is used in daily interaction. BIBLIOGRAPHY 1.
