Executive Summary Agro2Circular has redefined how circular economy principles can be applied in the agri-food sector by transforming residual streams into value-added resources. Over the 42‐month project period, the initiative developed and refined a holistic Communication and Dissemination (C&D) strategy that leveraged an innovative mix of digital platforms, stakeholder events, multimedia content, and direct engagement activities. Qualitatively, the project’s narrative is characterized by its multi-actor approach and adaptability. Early on, a strong visual identity and clear messaging were established through the development of a dedicated brand book, leaflets, and consistent graphic materials that reinforced the project’s commitment to sustainability and circularity. Throughout its lifetime, Agro2Circular maintained dynamic interactions with diverse audiences: from local school workshops and interactive training sessions aimed at 2,000+ students to strategic participation in EU-level policy discussions and international events. The project fostered a broad exchange of knowledge via its tailored Info-pack, Best Practice Book, and a series of impactful videos—including the presentation, DIS, final, and video-interview series—that brought real voices and success stories to the forefront. Moreover, the incorporation of standardization efforts, such as the development of a new European PreStandard (CWA) for bioactive extract characterization, underpinned the project’s technical achievements and laid the groundwork for replicability across sectors. A core pillar of the project was its commitment to continuous improvement. Feedback from rigorous monitoring—using metrics such as the Community Engagement Index (CEI), Website Engagement Index (WEI), Social Engagement Index (SEI), and Publications Engagement Index (PEI)—allowed the consortium to tailor its communications in real time. The iterative refinement of strategies ensured that Agro2Circular’s messages were not only widely disseminated but also deeply resonant with technical experts, industry stakeholders, policy makers, and the general public. By weaving together scientific innovation, stakeholder collaboration, and creative dissemination formats, the project has set a benchmark for future circular economy initiatives. Agro2Circular successfully positioned itself as a pioneering project in circular economy adoption, bridging scientific innovation with practical implementation and fostering long-term sustainability in the agrifood sector. In terms of clustering, vibrant cooperation has been nurtured with the Green Deal Support Office, the CCRI and the LOOP cluster (involving A2C, FRONTSH1P, Circular Foam and EcoeFISHent). Communication and Dissemination strategy The Agro2Circular project has successfully completed its Communication, Engagement, and Dissemination (CED) strategy, leveraging complementary approaches and activities: ● Communication: aimed to raise visibility and awareness of project activities, goals, results, impacts, and benefits among non-technical audiences and the general public. This was achieved by presenting information in an accessible and understandable manner, creating broad social acceptance of the innovative recycling and upcycling solutions developed for the agri-food sector. ● Dissemination: sought to facilitate the acceptance and adoption of Agro2Circular’s results within technical audiences across the agri-food value chains. These efforts ensured the smooth transfer of knowledge, skills, and data, building a robust community at the EU, local, and regional levels around Agro2Circular. ● Engagement: focused on establishing a strong, two-way connection with selected stakeholders, ensuring their active involvement in Agro2Circular’s activities. This approach integrated stakeholders' views, needs, and expectations into the development of the project's solutions, enhancing their relevance and effectiveness. The C&D strategy was tightly aligned with the goals of the exploitation activities, promoting the uptake and sustainability of the project’s results beyond its conclusion. This strategy operated at both European/international and local/regional/national levels. At the EU/international level, ICONS, in collaboration with CETEC as project coordinator, led the official project communication and dissemination activities and managed external relations with European/international stakeholders, supporting partners’ activities and facilitating the effective implementation of the C&D Plan. Locally, partners such as PRIMA, KVC, and AGROFOOD served as the main touchpoints with local stakeholders, industry representatives, policy makers and citizens. Throughout the project's duration, a continuous monitoring process assessed the impacts generated by the C&D activities. These monitoring and impact assessment activities provided feedback, allowing for the ongoing refinement of the C&D strategy and enhancing the overall effectiveness of Agro2Circular’s communication, engagement, and dissemination efforts. 3. Communication and Dissemination progress A set of Communication and Dissemination (C&D) channels and tools have been utilized to effectively reach various target audiences and address their specific needs and expectations. This variety aimed to enhance the reach and efficacy of the entire C&D campaign, thereby maximizing the impact of Agro2Circular across its different implementation phases. During the course of Agro2Circular, the C&D strategy underwent significant refinement to adapt to the evolving needs of the project and its stakeholders. Initially, a diverse set of C&D channels and tools was employed to effectively reach various target audiences, catering to their specific needs and expectations. As the project progressed, the strategy was tailored further to address A2C – Deliverable D8.2v1.0 Page 16 І117 This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement N°101036838. project, through exclusive interviews to experts in the field and key actors in promoting the circular economy in the agri-food sector of the Region of Murcia. Figure 13: PRIMAFRIO documentary News and press releases News and press releases serve to keep the public and media informed about significant milestones, achievements, and events related to the project, enhancing visibility and interest. Since the launch of Agro2Circular’s website, a total of 77 publications have been published, ranging from a variety of formats and topics, and consequently shared on social media. The publications play a crucial role in keeping stakeholders informed and engaged throughout the project. They cover diverse topics and address the interests of a wide audience while also showcasing progress, milestones, and results, thereby enhancing visibility and outreach at both a local and international scale. Events A website section was dedicated to promote project events and their topics, as well as practical information to register and participate in case it was possible. Figures A2C open day where the demonstrators were presented to relevant stakeholders, students and regional media Journalistic articles Two journalistic articles were written by professional journalists on topics related to the project which were particularly interesting to investigate and captivating also for a general audience. The articles’ goal was to increase the outreach and to highlight different aspects of the project research, while creating impact towards a wider audience, including the general public and media. The first article is titled: “Reinventing the wheelin the struggle to cut global waste: the food upcycling challenge” and it highlights the role of upcycling in reducing food waste and combating global warming, starting from some existing examples. It covers efforts like transforming underutilized resources and the Agro2Circular project’s work in upcycling agrifood waste into valuable products. The second article, titled “Life in agri-plastic is not perfect...but it’s getting better” explores the environmental challenges of agricultural plastics, like mulch films, and highlights solutions from the Agro2Circular project, including upcycling and bio-based biodegradable plastics, while addressing economic and technical hurdles. Figure 21: cover of second journalistic article Infographics Infographics are graphic products presenting a clear and visual representation of data and information; they are used to simplify complex information, making it easier to understand at a glance. In the context of Agro2Circular, infographics have been considered useful tools for immediate communication because the project produced a lot of complex results which needed to be communicated in an efficient and comprehensible way to the public. In fact, the three infographics are targeted to a wide audience, with the aim of making the technological processes easier to understand through the graphic layout. Three infographics have been produced in the framework of Agro2Circular, focused on different aspects of the project research: ● The first infographic is titled “What’s behind Agro2Circular: the prequel” and it is a sort of introduction to the following two, presenting in a visual coherent way the crucial ideas of sustainability and circular economy behind the project. The content reflects Agro2Circular’s approach towards transforming agrifood waste into new food formulations and much more, by also highlighting the positive outcome in terms of Co2 emissions and amount of waste saved by incineration. Figure 22: Infographic “What’s behind Agro2Circular: the prequel” ● The second infographic is titled “Technologies for the recycling of the organic agrifood wastes” and it focuses on the process of recycling and upcycling of agrifood waste. The infographic explains in detail the steps of the chemical process that allows agrifood waste to become something completely different. Figure 24: Infographic “Recycling and sorting of multilayer plastic residues” All three infographics can be found and downloaded from Agro2Circular website and have been disseminated and promoted through the website, the social media, and several multipliers. Info-pack The info-pack is a comprehensive document designed to provide clear and concise information about technical aspects of the project, designed for a tailored audience (policy makers and industry) to implement knowledge sharing and knowledge transfer. The info-pack is focused on two important results of the project: the A2C model and the Self-Assessment Tool (SAT). These two tools provide a robust framework for guiding regions in an effective transition towards circular economy, sustainability and active stakeholder engagement. The info-pack was released in English, and then translated into Spanish, Italian and Lithuanian, namely the three languages of the demo and replication sites of Agro2Circular’s technologies. Figure 25: Infopack cover page Figure 26: Info-pack internal page Best Practice Book The Best Practice Book (BPB) is a collection of proven methods, results, insights and recommendations aimed at improving processes and explaining how the project results were achieved. It serves as a key resource within the project, gathering successful approaches and lessons learned to support stakeholders in implementing efficient, innovative, and scalable solutions aligned with the initiative’s objectives. It also includes a scale of replicability which specifies the replication potential of each demonstrator. WEI basically reflects how effectively the website attracts and retains visitors. The 60sec measure was defined as the minimum time for content to be said to have generated interest. Figure 40: WEI value The following figure shows the trend of the website during the past 2 years. It shows how there have been some small peaks and lows due to the number and content of publications in those moments, and how since December 2023 it increased lightly but regularly, due to the large production of the latest stage of the project. Figure 41: WEI trend Figure 42 shows the most active web pages in terms of views: the homepage is the most visited webpage (also considering the richness of information included and the narrative created since the start), followed by the Spanish interface (proving the effectiveness of the awarenessraising activities carried out at local level), the news and events page, the resources section and the subscription webpage. Different specific news and press releases follow, in both English and Spanish versions. Figure 42: pageviews outreach PEI The Publications Engagement Index evaluates the effectiveness of published content, such as news and press releases, videos, journalistic articles, newsletters, and scientific papers by including downloads, citations and shares. The outreach number is significantly higher than the engagement number: this is explained by the fact that the publications are often A2C – Deliverable D8.2v1.0 Page 34 І117 This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement N°101036838. disseminated through multipliers and other platforms that, while ensuring to reach a broader audience, do not allow for interaction and therefore do not necessarily drive engagement of the audience. On the contrary, this is something that social media is most useful for. Figure 43: PEI data Figure 44: number of publications by type The following figures further stress the concepts previously explained about the difference between outreach and engagement: it can be noticed here that multipliers represent the biggest section in terms of outreach capability, while social media represent almost the totality of the engagement value. Figure 45 and Figure 46: PEI outreach and engagement by channel The figure below shows how each format is positioned according to the total average of publications’ outreach (horizontal axis) and engagement (vertical axis) by type. The circles’ dimensions are given by the PEI value of each publication’s type (meaning by the ratio between engagement and outreach). Being the interception of the axes the average values of all publications, it’s a straightforward consequence that some types of publications will be positioned in the “neutral” quadrant, being less effective with respect to the average of all publications. Journalistic articles are resulting to be the most effective formats to convey the A2C contents towards a broad audience, including the general public. On the other hand, social media video clips resulted to be very engaging towards the stakeholders of the project. Finally, more generalist publications like news releases, project updates and newsletters are positioned in the “neutral” quadrant, being less performing in terms of outreach and engagement against the average. The following plot provides further insights into the performance of the different types of video produced. Although most of the audiovisual production is resulting in the “engaging” quadrant (including video interviews to partners, the social media video pills produced in the context of social media campaigns and the final video), thus, being more oriented towards disseminating A2C contents towards stakeholders, the first presentation video remained stable in the “effective” quadrant, confirming the initial aim to convey A2C objectives and contents in a light way and aiming to target the public at large. SEI The Social Engagement Index aims at measuring the impact and outreach of social media activities, including multiple metrics, such as follower growth, post engagement (likes, shares, comments), and overall interaction rates across platforms. Agro2Circular has been active on LinkedIn throughout the whole duration of the project, and on Twitter until July 2024, when the channel was suspended due to reasons out of ICONS’ management (although the many attempts to reach out to Twitter’s administrators to retrieve the channel). Figure 47: SEI values The following figure shows the composition of the SEI value according to the different social media platform. As anticipated, LinkedIn is the one performing the best in terms of outreach and engagement, as it is both a professional and personal community where experts interact for both academical, professional and personal interest. As previously mentioned X/Twitter was suspended in July 2024 and it was decided not to replace it with another social media due to the proximity with the project’s end and the high effectiveness tracked of LinkedIn to convey A2C contents. Communication and engagement at local level As part of T8.3, led by PRIMAFRIO, a series of educational and outreach activities were carried out to raise awareness of Agro2Circular and promote circular economy principles. These initiatives targeted students, educators, and the broader community, fostering knowledge transfer and engagement through interactive and multimedia approaches. A relevant component of this effort was the organization of lectures and workshops in regional schools, universities, and educational events. Covering topics such as circular economy, biotechnology, plastic recycling, and waste recovery, these sessions reached approximately 2,000 students across 15 institutions, with a total of 43 training lectures delivered. Additionally, PRIMAFRIO coordinated the development of a video game competition focused on efficient waste management and artificial intelligence. Across two editions, more than 600 primary and secondary students participated, producing 147 video games after attending over 150 training sessions on programming and circular economy. This interactive approach helped engage young learners in a creative and practical way. A significant audiovisual effort was also undertaken with the production of the previously mentioned documentary film, designed to enhance community engagement and showcase A2C’s impact. Alongside the documentary, over 30 interviews and 20 thematic video segments were created, serving as valuable resources for dissemination activities. These efforts have been instrumental in ensuring the effective dissemination of A2C’s message at the local and regional levels, fostering greater awareness and participation in sustainable practices. Additionally, Kveloce has implemented a comprehensive Public Engagement Strategy in the framework of WP7 which also has a great relevance in term of promoting visibility, facilitating knowledge sharing, and ensuring effective communication and dissemination of project results. The engagement activities carried on by KVeloce and other regional partners in Spain were structured around a quadruple helix model involving academia, industry, public authorities, and civil society, and were conducted at both the local level, with a particular focus on Spain, and at the international level through various networking events, conferences, and collaborations. Key actions and activities included public engagement and stakeholder involvement, specifically in the following frameworks: ● Regional and Local Public Engagement Activities. o Development of a community-based scheme in Alhama de Murcia, including workshops, awareness campaigns, and interactive market stands. o Implementation of public consultations through surveys and focus groups targeting businesses, policymakers, and citizens. o Establishment of a stakeholder panel composed of experts from industry, research, and public administration to provide guidance on project developments. ● International Engagement and Dissemination. Communication and dissemination efforts were also carried on with the aim of reinforcing the already defined C&D strategy and adapt it to a local audience: ● Digital and Social Media Campaigns. o Management of the Spanish section of A2C project website featuring news, events, and project updates in Spanish language for implementing local outreach. o Active use of social media platforms (Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube) to amplify project visibility and share success stories. o Launch of a video documentary series showcasing project innovations and expert insights. ● Training and Knowledge Transfer Initiatives. o Organization of webinars and seminars on circular economy principles and sustainable waste management for students, professionals, and public stakeholders. o Implementation of an industry mentoring program, providing hands-on training to businesses on circular economy applications. o Design and distribution of educational toolkits and guidelines for various educational levels, ensuring the long-term impact of A2C knowledge. All these actions have been instrumental in achieving the objectives of the A2C Communication and Dissemination Strategy by ensuring broad outreach to key stakeholders, increased visibility of A2C research outcomes at multiple levels, enhanced knowledge transfer, and by supporting the adoption and replication of circular economy models in the agrifood sector. 8. Training, knowledge-transfer and guidelines As part of the C&D strategy, this task focused on equipping key stakeholders with the tools and knowledge needed to integrate circular economy principles in the agri-food sector. Through training materials, industry mentoring, and a best practices repository, A2C ensured the accessibility and practical application of its innovations. Several key actions were carried on, each one with a specific expected outcome: ● Development of training materials: structured resources for businesses, policymakers, and educators, addressing circular business models, waste valorisation, regulatory compliance, and interactive learning tools. These materials built on existing knowledge and adapted it to sector-specific challenges. These initiatives have been key also in raising awareness, facilitating knowledge transfer, and promoting circular economy adoption, thus having a direct relation with the communication and dissemination strategy. Clustering activities A key aspect of Agro2Circular’s communication and dissemination strategy has been its strong focus on networking and collaboration. By actively engaging with EU initiatives, sister projects, and regional stakeholders, the project has played a crucial role in fostering knowledge exchange and accelerating the adoption of circular economy solutions beyond its own scope. This action, corresponding to T8.5 and led by Eurada, brought on the following actions: ● Integration into key EU initiatives: Agro2Circular actively participated in CCRI (Circular Cities and Regions Initiative) and the Green Deal Support Office, contributing to working groups on bioeconomy, industrial symbiosis, and sustainable food systems, thus aligning with broader EU sustainability strategies. ● Engagement with sister projects: Regular LOOP Cluster meetings and participation in final conferences of projects like FRONTSH1P, Circular Foam, and EcoeFISHent created opportunities for cross-project learning, while strengthening the impact of circular systemic solutions at the European level. ● Participation in EU events: The project was present at high-profile platforms such as the EU Green Week and the EU Week of Regions and Cities, increasing visibility and fostering dialogue with policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders. ● Regional Multi-Stakeholder Alliances: Agro2Circular facilitated collaborations at the regional level, ensuring that circular strategies were not only discussed at the European level but also tested and implemented in local contexts. These networking efforts have been highly successful in amplifying the project’s reach, positioning Agro2Circular as a key player in the transition to a circular economy.
