This study investigates the impact of reading strategies on students’ comprehension and retention, emphasizing their role in enhancing academic performance and cognitive development. By examining pre-reading, during-reading, and post-reading strategies, the research highlights how structured approaches facilitate active engagement with texts, promote critical thinking, and improve long-term memory. The findings indicate that learners who consistently apply these strategies are better able to process information, retain knowledge, and transfer skills across various academic contexts. The study underscores the importance of integrating reading strategies into instructional practice to develop autonomous, strategic, and effective learners. Keywords: Reading strategies, comprehension, retention, pre-reading strategies, duringreading strategies, post-reading strategies, active learning, cognitive development. Introduction Reading is a fundamental skill in education, forming the basis for acquiring knowledge, developing critical thinking, and fostering lifelong learning. However, effective reading is not simply the ability to decode words; it requires the application of purposeful strategies that facilitate comprehension and retention of information. Research indicates that students often face challenges in understanding complex texts due to limited vocabulary, lack of prior knowledge, or insufficient engagement with the material. This highlights the necessity of employing reading strategies that actively support cognitive processing, enable meaningful connections, and enhance memory retention. Reading strategies encompass a variety of approaches, including predicting content, summarizing, questioning, visualizing, and monitoring comprehension. These strategies not only aid students in processing information more efficiently but also encourage active engagement with the text, promoting deeper understanding and critical analysis. Studies have shown that strategic reading improves both immediate comprehension and long-term retention, providing learners with the tools to apply knowledge across different subjects and contexts. Furthermore, reading strategies are essential for developing autonomous learners who can self-regulate their learning, evaluate their understanding, and adjust their approaches to complex texts. Relevance Reading strategies play a critical role in enhancing students’ comprehension and retention, which are essential for academic success. Many learners struggle to understand and remember information due to ineffective reading habits or lack of strategic guidance. Implementing techniques such as summarizing, questioning, predicting, and visualizing helps students engage
Dekabr, 2025-Yil 43 actively with texts, connect new knowledge to prior understanding, and retain information more effectively. In modern education, where students encounter vast amounts of information, mastering reading strategies is vital for developing independent learners who can process, analyze, and apply knowledge efficiently. Research in this area provides educators with evidence-based methods to improve teaching practices and learning outcomes. Main Body (Asosiy Qism) Reading strategies are essential tools that enhance students’ comprehension and retention of textual information. The first focus area involves pre-reading strategies, which prepare learners to engage with texts effectively. Techniques such as predicting content, activating prior knowledge, and setting reading goals allow students to approach new material with purpose and direction. By anticipating the content and connecting it to existing knowledge, learners can process information more efficiently, identify key concepts, and form mental frameworks that aid understanding. Pre-reading strategies also increase motivation, as students feel more confident and prepared to tackle challenging texts. Empirical research indicates that students who actively engage in pre-reading activities demonstrate higher comprehension and improved retention, as they are better able to organize information in meaningful ways. The second focus area centers on during-reading strategies, which guide students as they interact with texts. Strategies like questioning, summarizing, annotating, and visualizing enable learners to monitor comprehension and clarify misunderstandings in real time. Questioning prompts students to think critically about the text, while summarizing encourages them to condense and organize information logically. Annotating highlights important details, reinforcing memory, and visualization helps learners create mental images, linking abstract ideas to concrete representations. These strategies cultivate active reading habits, ensuring that students remain engaged and attentive. Research shows that consistent application of during-reading strategies significantly enhances immediate comprehension and facilitates the transfer of knowledge to longterm memory. The third focus area involves post-reading strategies, which support reflection, consolidation, and retention of information. Techniques such as reviewing summaries, discussing content with peers, creating concept maps, and self-testing enable learners to reinforce understanding and integrate new knowledge with prior learning. Post-reading activities also encourage metacognitive reflection, allowing students to evaluate their comprehension and adjust strategies as needed. Implementing post-reading strategies promotes retention by providing repeated exposure to information and opportunities for meaningful practice. Studies suggest that learners who engage in post-reading reflection and collaborative discussion demonstrate superior recall, deeper understanding, and greater ability to apply knowledge in different contexts. By combining pre-, during-, and post-reading strategies, educators can provide a comprehensive framework that maximizes comprehension, supports long-term retention, and develops autonomous, strategic learners. Results The implementation of reading strategies has a significant positive impact on students’ comprehension and retention. Learners who employ pre-reading strategies demonstrate improved preparedness and greater engagement with texts, leading to better identification of key ideas.
Dekabr, 2025-Yil 44 During-reading strategies, such as questioning, summarizing, annotating, and visualizing, enhance active interaction with the material, allowing students to monitor understanding and clarify misconceptions in real time. Post-reading strategies, including reviewing, discussion, and self-testing, consolidate learning and strengthen long-term memory. Research indicates that combining these strategies results in a comprehensive improvement in reading skills, enabling students to process information efficiently, retain knowledge for longer periods, and apply it in various academic contexts. Overall, strategic reading not only enhances comprehension but also fosters critical thinking, self-regulation, and autonomous learning. Conclusion Reading strategies are essential tools for improving comprehension and retention among students. The structured use of pre-reading, during-reading, and post-reading strategies allows learners to actively engage with texts, connect new information to prior knowledge, and retain it more effectively. These strategies also encourage critical thinking, self-assessment, and independent learning, which are vital for academic success. Educators who integrate reading strategies into instruction provide students with the skills necessary to navigate complex texts, enhance memory, and apply knowledge across subjects. Ultimately, fostering strategic reading habits prepares learners for lifelong learning, improving both their academic performance and overall cognitive development. References 1. Anderson, N. J.
