SHLF AI-Enhanced Metacognitive Diary: Guidelines & 2+2 Rule

Mattei, Gianpiero

Abstract

Educational resource for AI literacy in higher education Bionic Capability Orchestrator training requires AI literacy and reflective practice; this SHLF AI-Enhanced Metacognitive Diary module operationalises the “2+2 rule” within Active Project-Based Learning and digital ecosystems education. Developed as a core component of the Systemic Hybrid Learning Framework (SHLF), it integrates generative AI (e.g. ChatGPT) into reflective learning without compromising critical thinking or the development of Hybrid Professionals (“Purple People”) and future Bionic Capability Orchestrators. Overview The module specifies how to implement the AI-Enhanced Metacognitive Diary in MIS and related courses. It defines structure, assessment criteria and transparency requirements for documenting AI-supported work. The "2+2 Rule" methodology This pedagogical design pattern requires students to answer guiding questions in two distinct modes: Two questions with AI support: students disclose the specific prompt used, synthesise the AI output, and write a critical comment validating or challenging the answer against course materials and their own understanding, including a basic hallucination check. Two questions without AI support: students elaborate the answer autonomously to ensure conceptual mastery and to document their individual reasoning process. Contents included Learning Diary Guidelines: implementation rules, diary structure and assessment criteria. The guidelines include: student instructions and submission checklist pedagogical rationale, with reference to Cognitive Load Theory and AI literacy principles criteria for assessing AI transparency and basic hallucination detection Guided Questions examples: examples of guiding questions aligned with the course syllabus, ready to be embedded in diary assignments. Relation to the SHLF Open ToolkitThe diary is one of the core components of the SHLF Open Toolkit for MIS education (IsPartOf, DOI: [DOI_MASTER]) and can also be used independently as a template for AI-aware reflective assignments in other disciplines.
