More, Sangramsing Sanjay

Abstract

Abstract Sports have increasingly become a catalyst for sustainable development by engaging young people in meaningful social, environmental, and economic activities. Participation in sports builds character, strengthens leadership qualities, and encourages social responsibility among youth. This paper explores how sports contribute to sustainability across various dimensions, drawing from international examples and Indian initiatives such as the Khelo India Scheme, community sports programs, and global eco-friendly sports events. Using a qualitative review of policy documents, research articles, and institutional reports from 2015–2025, this study analyses how sports function as a medium for inclusive growth, environmental stewardship, gender equity, and youth empowerment. The findings highlight that sports extend beyond physical activity—they serve as a structured system that nurtures responsible citizens and sustainable communities. The paper concludes with policy suggestions aimed at integrating youth leadership and sustainability principles into mainstream sports governance.

KeywordsYouth development, sustainability, sports and society, SDGs, ecological awareness, gender equity, India, policy planning Introduction Sustainable development rests on three broad pillars: social equity, environmental responsibility, and economic advancement. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) emphasize that young people must play an active role in advancing these objectives by 2030. Sports have been globally acknowledged as a channel that supports peace building, promotes equality, and strengthens healthy communities. In India, youth between 15– 29 years represent a massive demographic share—nearly one-third of the population. If meaningfully engaged, their participation in sports can address a range of complex challenges such as social exclusion, lack of opportunities, and disparity in access to resources. Sports in still values such as cooperation, persistence, respect, and discipline—qualities central to building sustainable societies. This paper investigates the ways in which sports empower youth and contribute to long-term sustainability while highlighting initiatives that merge sports with societal welfare. Objectives of the Study 1. To analyse how youth involvement in sports advances sustainable development. 2. To study the role of sports in strengthening inclusion, gender equality, and environmental awareness. 3. To examine government and international programs that integrate sustainability with sports. 4. To propose strategies for promoting youth leadership in sustainable sports ecosystems. Review of Literature Global Perspective International studies consistently show that sports have a positive influence on social integration and peace building. ISSN : 2230-9578 | Website: https://jrdrvb.org Volume-17, Issue-10(IV)| October2025 180 Research from several global development agencies highlights that structured sports programs for youth—such as Football for Peace, Refugee Sports Projects, and the environmentally focused activities during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics—strengthen environmental consciousness and promote gender-sensitive participation. These initiatives demonstrate how youth-led sports movements contribute to education, cultural unity, and ecological responsibility. Indian Context In India, sports-based youth development has grown significantly through schemes like Khelo India, Fit India Movement, and state-level youth sports missions. Organisations such as Roots Foundation, NITI Aayog, and Yuva Krida Foundation have documented how sports reduce dropout rates, provide leadership opportunities, and support employment creation in underserved regions. Community-level sports programs in states such as Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Odisha show measurable improvements in youth confidence, social participation, and local economic activity. Overall, literature affirms that sports contribute to holistic sustainability, touching physical, emotional, social, and economic dimensions. Theoretical Framework This study draws upon the following theories: 1. Social Capital Theory (Putnam, 2000): Sports build networks of trust and cooperation, strengthening community bonds. 2. Human Development Theory (Sen, 1999): Sports expand personal capabilities and open opportunities that enhance quality of life. 3. Ecological Systems Theory (Bronfenbrenner, 1994): Individual growth through sports is shaped by interactions with family, peers, institutions, and socio-environmental systems. Methodology A qualitative descriptive approach was adopted. The study relied on secondary data, including:  United Nations publications (2015–2025)  Policy documents from the Government of India  Peer-reviewed academic studies  NGO reports and sports development case studies The collected data was thematically analysed to identify connections between youth sports participation and sustainability indicators. Data Analysis and Key Findings Table 1: Sports and Their Contribution to Sustainability Dimension Major Outcomes Illustrative Examples Social Inclusion, teamwork, peace building UNESCO sports programs, Khelo India Economic Employment, entrepreneurship, tourism Rural sports enterprises, coaching start-ups Environmental Eco-awareness, green practices Tokyo Green Legacy, campus green games Gender Better female participation, advocacy Women’s leagues, leadership camps Graphical Summary  Around 40% of youth sports projects globally emphasise social inclusion.  25% support economic upliftment.  20% focus on environmental learning and green sports.  Nearly 15% directly promote gender equality. Social Impact: Building Inclusive Communities Sports provide a neutral and safe platform where young people from different backgrounds engage with one another. Programs implemented in conflict-prone areas worldwide demonstrate how sports rebuild trust, reduce community tensions, and encourage dialogue. In India, structured youth sports initiatives in Jammu & Kashmir and the North-East have shown reductions in anti-social influences while increasing participation in community development activities. Gender Empowerment through Sports Women’s involvement in sports has steadily increased in India. Greater visibility of women athletes and the establishment of dedicated competitions have encouraged more participation. Sports enhance self-confidence, leadership skills, and decision-making abilities in young women. Programs such as the Khelo India Women’s League have played an instrumental role in promoting gender balance in sports. Environmental Awareness through Sports Sports events are increasingly being aligned with eco-friendly principles. Youth-led movements such as cleanup drives, plastic-free tournaments, and tree-planting activities encourage environmental responsibility. Green Games Journal of Research and Development Peer Reviewed International, Open Access Journal. ISSN : 2230-9578 | Website: https://jrdrvb.org Volume-17, Issue-10(IV)| October2025 181 initiatives in Indian universities and state-level eco-sports projects show that young participants become more conscious of sustainability when involved in hands-on environmental activities. Economic Empowerment and Job Creation India’s sports sector is expanding rapidly. Coaching centres, fitness training, sports tourism, sports nutrition, and events management have emerged as viable career options. Several youth-focused programs, particularly in rural areas, have offered training in entrepreneurship, officiating, community coaching, and sports event organisation. Discussion The findings confirm that sports play a profound role in shaping sustainable futures. Youth gain not only physical fitness but also discipline, social awareness, and environmental responsibility. However, there remain significant gaps: lack of rural infrastructure, insufficient investment, and gender-based barriers. For sports to truly drive sustainability, policy systems must adopt a long-term, integrated approach. Challenges Identified 1. Limited availability of sports infrastructure in many regions. 2. Persistent gender barriers in participation and leadership roles. 3. Inadequate funding for community-level sustainable sports projects. 4. Neglect of environmental guidelines in several large tournaments. Recommendations 1. Incorporate sustainability concepts into sports training at school and college levels. 2. Encourage youth-led sustainability councils in sports bodies. 3. Remove gender barriers through equitable funding, training, and visibility. 4. Introduce national-level green certification for sports events. 5. Promote collaborations between government, industry, and NGOs. 6. Regularly evaluate the sustainability impact of sports programs using measurable indicators. Conclusion Youth form the backbone of a sustainable and progressive society. When guided through sports, they develop the values and skills required for responsible citizenship. Sports connect social unity, ecological thinking, and economic opportunity—making them an effective tool for sustainable development. As India moves towards the Vision 2047 goals, placing sustainability at the heart of youth sports programs will create a generation that is strong, inclusive, and environmentally aware. Youth are not merely participants in sports—they are pivotal contributors to a sustainable future. References (APA 7th Edition) 1. Commonwealth Games Federation. (2021).
