Abstract

The Hive is a cooperative card-based board game designed to support the creation of inclusive spaces through collaborative task completion by all participants. Players must collectively decide which tasks to prioritise and which to leave aside, reflecting the reality of limited resources and the need for strategic coordination in inclusive project work. The game explicitly encourages reflection on integrating a gender perspective within teaching and learning contexts. The game consists of a 72-card deck: 32 Task Cards and 40 Team Cards. Each task can be completed by placing up to four compatible team cards orthogonally around it, emphasising that different profiles contribute differently across tasks. The Hive supports 2–4 players, with an additional solo mode included in the rulebook. Gameplay combines resource management, constrained communication (players must not reveal their hands), and optional requests for additional resources. Scoring rewards completed tasks based on the diversity of contributing teams, while penalties apply for incomplete tasks and unused cards. The rulebook also provides facilitation recommendations for classroom use, including debriefing prompts to foster critical reflection.

Serious Card Game Print & Play: The Hive. DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.17920454 Introduction. The Hive is a board game focused on creating inclusive spaces through the completion of tasks by all the people involved in these processes. For every task completed, the hive becomes stronger, and for every team that participates, the hive succeeds in conveying the value of people as a fundamental pillar for building bonds and bridges between projects. However, resources are not unlimited, and players will need to decide which tasks they wish to complete and which to leave aside, using the teams of people available, in order to achieve the highest score within this collaborative game. The Hive seeks to encourage reflection on the inclusion of the gender perspective within teaching. Components. The Hive consists of a deck of 72 cards divided into two types: • 32 trask cards. Each task card can be completed by 4 team cards. One team card is placed on each of the 4 sides adjacent to the task card in an orthogonal arrangement. A task card can only be completed by certain team cards. In other words, not all people can help complete all tasks. • 40 Team Cards representing people who help complete tasks. Each team card may only be placed on one of the 4 sides of a task card, and only if it can contribute to completing it. Example of a Task Card. At the top are the icons corresponding to the team cards that can help complete this task (pencil, brain, and book). Example of a Team Card. Each team card is represented by an icon (in this case, Academic Research and Development is represented by a brain). At the bottom right is the number of cards of that team of people included in the game (x4 in this case). Players. The Hive is a cooperative board game for 2 to 4 players. At the end of this manual, the rules for solo play (one single player) are also included. How to start. First, one of the players must shuffle all the available cards (72), creating a central deck. This central deck will be the resource deck (containing both task cards and team cards). At the beginning of each game of The Hive, each player draws their initial hand of cards from the resource deck: • 6 cards if there are 2 players. • 4 cards if there are 3 players. • 3 cards if there are 4 players. There is no limit to the number of cards a player may hold during the game. Next, the group decides who will be the starting player. That player must place the first task card in the centre of the table. If several players have task cards to place, the starting player will be the last person who has been to a library. Example of a Completed Task Card. Four team cards matching the required icons have been placed around it in an orthogonal arrangement.. The game begins at that moment. IMPORTANT! Players must never reveal the cards they hold in their hands. If they do, they must discard their entire hand and draw a new one from the central deck. Turn sequence. A turn corresponds to the action of one player. When a player is taking their turn, they are considered the active player. At the beginning of each turn, the active player must: Draw the top two cards from the central deck and look at them. Then: • Discard one of them (outside the play area, creating a face-up discard pile). • Add the other card to their hand. After this, the active player MUST PERFORM ONE OF THESE THREE ACTIONS (and only one): 1. MANAGE RESOURCES. Play as many cards from their hand as they can or wish, following only two rules of orthogonal placement (cards cannot be placed diagonally): • A task card (with the exception of the first task card that starts the game) must be associated with one or more team cards that can contribute to completing that task. • A team card must be associated with one or more task cards to which it can contribute. 2. COMMUNICATE WITH THE OTHERS. Discard a single card from your hand and openly ask your group whether they have any type of team or task in their hands (Do you have Faculty? Do you have Students? Do you have any task that requires Students?). The placement of the central task is incorrect. The teams Faculty, Library Staff, and Students are correctly positioned, but Academic Management prevents its placement in that spot, since it does not have an icon matching the task. The Faculty team cannot be placed in that position, because although it has an icon matching the task on its right (pencil), it does not have an icon matching the task above it. The other teams are correctly positioned. 3. REQUEST EXTRA RESOURCES. Draw two extra cards, without looking at them, from the top of the central deck. • The first card is added to the player’s hand. • The second card must be played immediately and compulsorily, whenever possible (following the two placement rules). If it cannot be placed, it must be discarded. Once one of the three actions has been carried out, the active player’s turn ends, and play passes to the player on their left. REMEMBER! Players may talk during the game, but they must NEVER reveal the cards they hold in their hands, nor tell another participant which card to play. If they do, they must discard their entire hand and draw a new one. End of the game. The game ends when: • The central deck is exhausted (no cards remain). At that precise moment, the player who drew the last card from the central deck may play their turn. Afterwards, the game ends. Scoring. Each completed task card scores as many points as the number of different teams that contributed to completing it. Examples of Task Card Scoring. The Task in this example can be complete with teams showing the pencil, mortarboard, or book icon. Componentes. Cómo empezar a jugar.. ¡No desfallezcáis!
