Deliverable 4.1. Technical dissemination article 4 1. Introduction Although the main objective of the MONIMED project is to assess the effects of forest adaptive and multifunctional management, incorporating new, closer-to-nature management strategies, on biodiversity conservation, mitigation capacity and climate resilience, the project also aims to transfer the results to the local and regional levels, raising social awareness of the challenges of sustainable forest management and the need for long-term research programmes to assess these challenges. This secondary MONIMED objective is achieved through the following activities: - Organising three field visits to the field trials, especially for forest managers, forest owners and forestry students, to showcase new Climate-Smart Forestry practices. - The organisation of a technical seminar for forest researchers and managers, including owners and practitioners from public and private entities, as well as conservation and environmental organisations, and the general public. - The creation and dissemination of technical documents (deliverables and articles). - Dissemination through different media: Instagram, X, webpages and other media. Initially, as stated in the project proposal, this deliverable included a final technical dissemination article summarising the project's main results, the Climate-Smart Forestry practices applied, and the monitoring methodologies. However, during the project's development, it was found to be very difficult to publish such an article without a long data series to evaluate the performance of the new CSF practices, despite the description of the practices and the monitoring protocol. For this reason, the focus of the deliverable has shifted towards showcasing all the achievements in the transfer and dissemination of the results, including the drafting of a scientific article demonstrating the effects of conventional management in Requesens 10 years after treatment, using the data from MONIMED inventories. Approximately 12,775 people have been made aware of the project objectives, methodologies and results through the dissemination activities performed within the MONIMED project.
Deliverable 4.1. Technical dissemination article 5 2. Field visits to the field trials Three field visits to the field trials were carried out between July and October 2025, with 44 people attending. The visits included a presentation of the silvicultural techniques applied and the monitoring network designed in situ, encouraging discussion and debate among participants about the opportunities and barriers to applying and replicating these new approaches. 2.1. Field visit to the mixed forest of Pinus sylvestris and oaks in the Montesquiu natural park (Barcelona) The visit took place on Monday 14 July 2025 and was attended by 24 people. Those present included several researchers, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students from CREAF, as well as technicians and managers from the Montesquiu Natural Park and the Barcelona Council. The programme included a four-hour visit to the field trials, starting with the conventional practices and moving on to the new CSF practices. The visit ended with a meal at the park restaurant. Deliverable 4.1. Technical dissemination article 6 2.2. Field visit to the Holm oak forest in La Albera protected area (Girona) The visit took place on Saturday 18 October 2025, with 10 people in attendance. The field visit was organised in collaboration with the La Albera Protected Area to reach a wider audience than initially anticipated. Those attending included forestry students, rural agents, primary school teachers and forest owners. The programme included a two-hour visit to the field trials, showcasing both conventional and new CSF practices, as well as a visit to the estate's cultural castle and a drinks reception. Figure 2. Left: Programme for the field visit to Requesens. Right: Two moments from the field visit. 2.3. Field visit to the holm oak forest in the Montnegre-Corredor natural park (Barcelona) The visit took place on Tuesday 28 October 2025, with 10 people in attendance. The field visit was organised in collaboration with the Montnegre-Corridor Owners Association as part of a technical seminar held during Forest Week in Sant Celoni, a municipality in the province of Barcelona. The MONIMED technical seminar took place in the municipality in the morning, followed by a visit to the MONIMED field trials and the LIFE AgroForAdapt project field trials in the afternoon.
Deliverable 4.1. Technical dissemination article 7 Those present included forest researchers, regional government technicians, farmers and forest owners. The programme included a two-hour visit to the field trials, showcasing both conventional and new CSF practices. Figure 3. Left: Programme for the field visit to Montnegre. Deliverable 4.1. Technical dissemination article 8 3. Technical Seminar A technical seminar took place on 28 October 2025, with 16 people in attendance. The seminar formed part of Sant Celoni’s annual Forest Week event, which has been showcasing innovations in the forest sector across the region for the last 11 years. It was organised together with the Montnegre-Corridor Owners Association and counted with the collaboration of the Catalan Government and the Forest Science and Technology Centre (CTFC). Attendant profiles included forest researchers, regional government technicians, forest owners, farmers and general public. The technical conference addressed suitable forest management strategies for adapting Mediterranean forests to climate change, based on the findings of various projects ranging from stand to landscape scales. The conference consisted of four presentations: two about forest management projects at the stand level (Life MixForChange - LIFE15 CCA/ES/000060 and MONIMED), and two about forest management at the landscape level (Life AgroForAdapt - LIFE20 CCA/ES/001682 and Resilient Agro-forestry Landscapes) (Programme at Figure 5). The MONIMED presentation focused on two topics: an initial overview of the conventional practices developed under the Sudoe Montclima project, along with the outcomes of the three-year monitoring period (2020–2022); and an overview of the MONIMED project, its objectives, the new climate-smart forestry practices implemented, the monitoring network, and the results of the 2024–2025 inventories across all sites (see the presentation in Annex 1).
