Azzola, Alessandra; Habibi Minelli, Sam

Abstract

The ECHOES Deliverable D5.3: Strategy and Roadmap for Capacity Building, Training, and Knowledge Transfer outlines a comprehensive, inclusive, and sustainable framework for developing and delivering capacity-building resources within the European Cloud for Heritage Open Science (ECHOES) project. This deliverable is a living document, designed to evolve alongside the project’s iterative assessment of community needs, resource development, and ecosystem integration. The strategy aligns with the guiding principles established in D5.11, published in November 2024, emphasizing accessibility, inclusivity, sustainability, and interdisciplinarity. It identifies target communities—including cultural heritage professionals, researchers, educators, and citizens—and maps their training needs to modular, reusable, and adaptable learning resources. The document also details the typologies and formats of capacity-building resources, such as foundational and operational training, and outlines delivery methods and channels, including structured learning experiences, hands-on labs, and role-based content. A strategic roadmap is provided, linking the curriculum’s phased development to the project’s milestones, such as the release of Vertical Applications (VAs) and the implementation of cascading grants. The roadmap ensures alignment with other Work Packages (WPs) and the broader European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH) ecosystem, fostering synergies and long-term sustainability. The deliverable concludes with immediate follow-up actions, including the finalization of introductory training modules and pilot sessions, and sets the stage for the next deliverable, D5.4, scheduled for November 2026, which will formalize the curriculum architecture and evaluation framework. By adopting a community-driven, modular, and FAIR-by-Design approach, ECHOES aims to empower diverse stakeholders to engage meaningfully with the ECCCH, ensuring the project’s impact extends beyond its lifespan.

These six axes provide a framework to translate high-level principles into concrete design decisions: 1. Focus on people (Principle 1, 2 & 7): Focus on benefits and impact for users’ skills development, by delivering the desired learning outcomes for these communities’ needs. Linked to user profiles and training logs where needed (e.g., for cascading grant monitoring or certification). 2. Audience Diversity and accessibility (Principles 3 & 4): The training materials will be developed with the needs of various user groups in mind – from cultural heritage professionals, community facilitators, policy makers, administrators, to creative practitioners, researchers, educators and citizens – and consider differences in digital literacy, linguistic backgrounds, and professional needs. WCAG guidelines will be respected as much as possible to support inclusive education across visual, auditory, and cognitive dimensions. 3. Modularity, Reusability and Adaptability (Principles 4 & 5): Resources are conceived as modular and FAIR digital objects 3 , enabling translation and local adaptation without losing coherence with ECHOES tools and methodologies. 4. Sustainability-by-Design (Principles 3, 5): All training outputs are produced with open formats, interoperable metadata, and standards that favour long-term accessibility and updatability, in line with FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) and FAIR-by-Design 4 methodology for learning materials developed in the Skills4EOSC project 5 . 5. Ethical and Legal Sensitivity (related to Principle 1): Training content reflects awareness of data governance, intellectual property, and cultural sensitivities, considering the CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance 6 . 6. Distributed and interoperable: (Principles 2, 3, 7) The resources developed within the ECHOES curriculum will be created and stored primarily on DARIAH-Campus, which serve as the main hosting environment. The project website could act as a single-entry 3 Learning Materials as FAIR Digital Objects: A Shared Methodology for Training in H2IOSC | Umanistica Digitale 4 https://www.go-fair.org/fair-principles/. 5 The FAIR-by-Design method for learning resources has been adopted and adapted by different communities and projects, e.g. H2IOSC, ATRIUM, OSTrails. 6 CARE Principles — Global Indigenous Data Alliance ECHOES Project 101157364 – D5.3 Strategy and Roadmap for Capacity Building, Training and Knowledge Transfer 17 point by providing curated links and access pathways to these materials. Structured metadata following international standard will be applied to the resources hosted on DARIAH-Campus, so that they could be harvested or indexed by external training discovery platforms. This approach would facilitate broader visibility and potential cross-platform integration, while keeping the core materials consistently stored within the Campus environment. These design priorities reflect the intersection of the impact ambitions of ECHOES with the real-world constraints and opportunities of heritage communities, so they can fully engage and use the Cloud, address each community specific features and demographics, its challenges and constrains regardless of where they may operate. 2.4 Alignment with the ECHOES Impact Model for Capacity Building The training strategy is designed as a critical enabler of the ECHOES Impact Model for Capacity Building, which provides a coherent and reusable framework to monitor, evaluate, and communicate the effectiveness of training activities. While developed within the project, the model is intended to outlive ECHOES and support the wider ECCCH communities and future developers, ensuring that capacity-building efforts remain aligned with long-term transformation goals in the cultural heritage sector. It links strategic objectives to measurable outcomes in a way that can be adopted and adapted beyond the project’s lifetime. At the core of the impact model are four key dimensions: 1. Technological Empowerment: Users are provided support to learn and master the ECHOES tools (e.g. the Vertical Applications - VA1, VA2, VA3 and possibly the ones which will be provided by sister projects) and understand the digital workflows behind data ingestion, annotation, and storytelling. 2. Community Engagement: Training supports the uptake of digital practices that reinforce community transdisciplinary collaboration, data and workflows optimisation and knowledge exchange. 3. Professional and Institutional Leverage: The training offer supports capacitybuilding at both professional and organisational levels. While the primary focus is on enhancing the skills, practices, and operational capabilities of cultural heritage professionals and public administrators, this strengthened capacity also contributes to a more favourable institutional environment for the uptake of the ECHOES infrastructure, with potential downstream effects on policy development. ECHOES Project 101157364 – D5.3 Strategy and Roadmap for Capacity Building, Training and Knowledge Transfer 18 4. Long-term Knowledge Ecosystem: Through the reuse of content across academic, educational, and civic environments, the curriculum contributes to a sustained knowledge base beyond the project lifespan, with training materials updated to incorporate technological progress and evolving best practices at least throughout the five years of the ECHOES project. The operationalisation of the impact model is embedded in WP5 tasks. In T5.2, principles for capacity building and an impact framework based on the Europeana Impact Framework provide guidance and define metrics to monitor outcomes. Workflows and processes ensure synchronized and sustainable development of resources across WPs. In T5.4, training delivery and monitoring leverage these metrics to assess progress and feed back into the model, enabling iterative improvements. Data collected from training activities and user feedback inform adjustments to curriculum content, delivery methods, and resource allocation, ensuring alignment with the defined impact dimensions. Furthermore, training and capacity-building activities are informed by the Cloud Assessment Framework developed in WP4, specifically T4.2.2: “Methodology for the continuous analysis and assessment of the tools and data”. This methodology ensures that tools and resources meet the evolving needs of communities, supporting the long-term relevance of the ECCCH. This approach resonates directly with Principle 7: Stay Relevant and Impact-Driven from D5.1, reinforcing that training must continuously respond to user needs and ecosystem developments. By centering training around this model, ECHOES ensures that capacity-building activities are not only coherent and measurable but also adaptive, responsive to user needs, and capable of generating tangible, long-term benefits across technological, community, institutional, and knowledge ecosystem dimensions. 3. Target communities and training needs The ECHOES strategy for capacity building resources, training and knowledge transfer is designed to support a wide number of actors involved in the cultural heritage ecosystem. Based on the work undertaken in WP4, the core target communities have been identified not as passive beneficiaries, but as active agents of transformation. Training therefore plays an important role in enabling these communities to engage meaningfully with the tools, platforms, and governance models proposed by ECHOES. Through a multi-method assessment process (survey, desk research, community workshops), user needs were identified and mapped against ECHOES objectives in WP4. The training model aligns educational approaches from ECHOES’ partners backgrounds (as some partners are research groups and some are industrial operators) with digital maturity, user role, and ECHOES Project 101157364 – D5.3 Strategy and Roadmap for Capacity Building, Training and Knowledge Transfer 19 expected impact, ensuring that every resource produced contributes to empowerment, sustainability, and cultural sovereignty. 3.1 Identification of target communities The target audience starts from the project consortium as we need to have internal accepted awareness, then to external subjects to include new adopters, cultural professionals from institutions with limited digital infrastructure, and applicants for cascading grants who need a general overview before progressing to VA-specific or advanced training. Drawing from WP4’s ECHOES Consultation (2025) preliminary analysis of the results and ongoing work on community segmentation to design personas exemplifying the diverse user profiles; the following user profiles have been defined for the purpose of this deliverable: • Cultural Heritage Professionals: curators, conservators-restorers, archivists, documentary and digitisation specialists (e.g., cataloguers, photographers, registrars), site managers, architects, other museum staff, etc. • Researchers and Educators: academics, students, teachers working in the field of cultural heritage. • Community Facilitators: cultural mediators, educators, local NGO representatives, umbrella cultural organizations. • Policy Makers and Administrators: national, regional and local Cultural Heritage and Research authorities. • Creative Practitioners: artists, designers, digital storytellers engaged in communitybased projects. • Citizens and Volunteers: local actors engaged in participatory documentation and storytelling. Each group exhibits different training thresholds and motivations. For example, professionals seek procedural clarity, compliance with standards and real-case solutions, while volunteers may prioritize intuitive interfaces and value recognition. In addition to the user types, we distinguish the following learner types: Learners: individuals of the user types mentioned above who are interested in building ECCCHrelated skills or knowledge for their own performance. Trainers: individuals who need to learn about the ECCCH and the ECHOES Cloud applications in order to be able to train others how to use the applications and related resources in instructor-led training. ECHOES Project 101157364 – D5.3 Strategy and Roadmap for Capacity Building, Training and Knowledge Transfer 20 3.2 Identification of training needs The ongoing analysis of ECHOES Consultation (2025) and consultations held during WP4 activities reveal a constellation of training related challenges and needs. While the specific needs have not yet been fully clustered, it is possible to draw some insights related to capacity building. In general terms, respondents express the use of digital tools and services or the willingness to do so. Although when asked which difficulties prevent them to increase the use of tools and resources for their work, results reveal issues related to learning and skills needs. Currently responses are clustered around twenty groups covering issues from data related to interoperability and technical challenges. However, there are four groups related to learning: • IT support, staffing & skills gaps: Resulting from a lack of institutional support, experts and mentors support, as well as limited staff expertise. Revealing structural capacity gaps, insufficient and uneven digital literacy. • Learning curve & lack of time: Steep learning curves and limited time or training opportunities within their regular workload. This is aggravated by lack, discontinued or short periods of funds for meaningful upskilling activities. • Documentation & best-practice gaps: Poor or missing documentation, lack of examples and clear specifications and how-tos. • Domain fit & specialized needs: Lack of sector-specific features aligned with heritage workflows, or of up-to-date and reusable best practices. The first two topics are the third and fourth identified as major constrains for efficient and timely uptake of digital tools and resources, which however can be overcome by capacity building solutions able to address and resolve documentation gaps, domain needs. Deliver ongoing funded learning opportunities in context-specific and user-friendly formats, while promoting opportunities for knowledge and best-practices sharing. Moreover, to ensure the responsible and effective use of the ECHOES infrastructure, training will embed transversal skills into all modules. These include: • Digital Literacy and Technical Skills: understanding digital formats, persistent identifiers, FAIR data principles, metadata curation. and key concepts such as Digital Twins, knowledge bases, semantic annotation, and interoperable data workflows. • Ethical Awareness: ensuring inclusivity, avoiding bias in AI-assisted tasks, and managing data provenance and attribution. • Legal Literacy: dealing with copyright, open licensing, GDPR, and data sharing agreements. ECHOES Project 101157364 – D5.3 Strategy and Roadmap for Capacity Building, Training and Knowledge Transfer 21 • Cultural Sensitivity: acknowledging diversity in cultural practices, terminologies, and historical contexts across communities (including gender issues, SSH, etc.). 3.3 Strategic matching of needs, users and resource types Building on the identified needs and user profiles, ECHOES proposes a matrix-based approach to training design, where each training resource is matched to: • A primary user type (e.g., conservator, facilitator). • A competency area and learning outcomes (e.g., legal, technical, participatory). • A defined learning outcomes for each resource, specifying the skills or knowledge the user will gain. • A training format (e.g., live webinar, PDF guide, hands-on toolkit, modular MOOC). • A delivery channel (e.g., ECHOES partner platforms linked to the main project site, onsite sessions). This matching logic enables modular learning pathways that support both linear and nonlinear learning journeys. For example, a local heritage association may start with a short explainer video on co-creation, then advance to a hands-on workshop on the Collection Ingestion Tool. In D5.4, this matching matrix will be operationalised into a catalogue of training resources, equipped with metadata to facilitate reuse and integration in third-party educational platforms. 4. Capacity building resources The structure of the training offer reflects the modularity of the ECHOES ecosystem and is tailored to the specific needs identified during community consultations and survey-based assessments. These cross-cutting modules will be developed with the contribution of partners such as CLARIN, ICOM, ICOMOS, ENCATC, APEF, NEMO and ECCO, and will also support the cascading grant activities by preparing applicants to work with community-sensitive data and interoperable tools. The general training modules aim to equip users with foundational knowledge to navigate the Cultural Heritage Cloud. These modules introduce users to the architecture of the infrastructure, the logic of the ECCCH Knowledge Base, and key functionalities such as data ingestion, semantic annotation, digital object management, and provenance tracking or 3D ECHOES Project 101157364 – D5.3 Strategy and Roadmap for Capacity Building, Training and Knowledge Transfer 22 restoration annotation or transcription generation. It is also instrumental to WP9 evaluation processes as training actions might include an evaluation section too. The training will include: • Tutorials, • documentation, • video walkthroughs, • in person presentations (during events, meetings and workshops), • webinars. Where appropriate, this general training will be contextualized through real-world use cases, including examples from previous projects (e.g., sister projects). 4.1 Existing relevant resources In the context of Task 5.1.2, the project undertakes a systematic inventory of existing training offers and infrastructures to improve awareness of the resources already available and identify opportunities for strategic action. This mapping goes beyond a simple listing: it is a tool to understand the current landscape, leverage existing initiatives, and inform the design of future activities. The inventory includes not only resources identified within the project’s immediate environment but also those from sister projects. The inventory identifies, lists and describes existing learning resources which might be relevant to users of the ECCCH and directs them to the original source where such resources can be accessed. The aim of having an inventory of learning resources relevant for the Cultural Heritage Cloud users is to avoid duplications where resources already exist and fill in gaps where there are no resources available to meet identified training needs. The inventory should not be seen as yet another training platform, but as a meta catalog that builds upon existing repositories of resources (DARIAH Campus, E-RIHS HS Academy, H2IOSC training infrastructure...) and offers a selection of courses and materials relevant for the various categories of users. To perform this aggregation, an important step is to create this meta catalog based on the recommendations contained in Recommendations for a Minimal Metadata Set to Aid Harmonised Discovery of Learning Resources (Hoebelheinrich et al., 2022) 7 . 7 Hoebelheinrich, N. J., Biernacka, K., Brazas, M., Castro, L. J., Fiore, N., Hellström, M., Lazzeri, E., Leenarts, E., Martinez Lavanchy, P. M., Newbold, E., Nurnberger, A., Plomp, E., Vaira, L., van Gelder, C. W. G., & Whyte, A. (2022). ECHOES Project 101157364 – D5.3 Strategy and Roadmap for Capacity Building, Training and Knowledge Transfer 23 Some of the aforementioned platforms, such as the H2IOSC training library, have already followed this strategy, and their set of metadata could be used as a basis and test bed for developing the Inventory. This federated approach respects the depositing practices of the various communities, while ensuring a broader visibility. It is particularly important for fields such as research on inscribed objects and manuscripts that can offer training relevant to both Cultural Heritage practitioners and Digital Humanists. Besides the inventory of existing learning resources, a methodology for adopting a common language among communities and across communities has been designed in T4.2.3 to reinforce the community-building strategy. More specifically, (a) an inventory of existing vocabularies and terminologies has been compiled, considering the different linguistic, disciplinary and cultural practices, and (b) a set of recommendations will be produced in T7.4.1 to overcome language and discipline barriers to foster connections across different fields, and ensure multilingual and aligned metadata. As a use case to test the methodology, a project glossary has been compiled and is currently being validated by CH experts. This glossary is meant as a shared ECHOES reference resource relevant to clarify and unify the use of terms across all capacity building resource types, including training. A first version of the glossary will be published by the end of 2025 and further improved during the project. Importantly, the inventory will uncover the needs for promoting the integration of ECHOES capacity-building resources into training programmes offered by universities alliances, networks and other Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). 4.2 Resources developed by the ECHOES project The training provided by ECHOES covers two key-elements for the success of the Cultural Heritage Cloud: 1. Introductory course, which provides future users with fundamental concepts for exploring the potential benefits and services of this platform. 2. Application-specific training on the three applications developed by the project. More detailed information on the curriculum, including course contents, learning outcomes, and training formats, will be provided in D5.4. Recommendations for a minimal metadata set to aid harmonised discovery of learning resources (1.0). Zenodo. https://doi.org/10.15497/RDA00073 ECHOES Project 101157364 – D5.3 Strategy and Roadmap for Capacity Building, Training and Knowledge Transfer 24 4.2.1 Introduction to the Cloud The goal of this course is to build learners’ foundational understanding of the key concepts and technologies necessary to engage with the cloud, demonstrate some of its practical tools and applications, and inspire their further exploration of digital transformation in the heritage and research domains. The target audience includes Cultural Heritage professionals, researchers and developers. In this course, we will introduce the idea and purpose of the ECCCH in plain language; present core vocabulary and conceptual building blocks; illustrates how cloud-based infrastructures support collaborative cultural heritage work; show how ECCCH is aligned with broader European open science mandates; demystify the technical architecture in accessible terms; provide meaningful case studies that scale from local to international; and encourage and support next steps for learners. 4.2.2 Application-Specific Training Each VA represents a domain-specific entry point to the ECHOES infrastructure. Training for these applications is critical for their adoption and sustainability and will be developed as dedicated toolkits (T5.3.2), following the design principles articulated in D5.1. 4.2.2.1 OCRA – Online Conservation Restoration Annotator 8 The Online Conservation Restoration Annotator (OCRA) training aims to equip professionals to manage three-dimensional documentation of objects adding their autoptic observations, information and scientific analysis on their digital surface. It will address the use of 3D models, shared models, open linked data, and the integration of scientific and historical metadata. Special emphasis will be placed on user-driven data workflows and the alignment with conservation standards (e.g., CIDOC CRM, ICOMOS guidelines, CEN/TC 346 standards). Practical modules will demonstrate collaborative annotation using the platform’s shared workspace. Target users: • Conservation and restoration professionals (conservators-restorers, curators, architects, private companies specialized in built heritage conservation); • Heritage scientists and researchers. 8 OCRA – Echoes – Eccch ECHOES Project 101157364 – D5.3 Strategy and Roadmap for Capacity Building, Training and Knowledge Transfer 25 Goal of the application: • Enable users to manage three-dimensional documentation of cultural heritage objects. • Add autoptic observations, scientific information, and historical metadata to 3D models. • Support user-driven collaborative workflows with hierarchical roles and tasks. • Ensure alignment with conservation standards (e.g., CIDOC CRM, ICOMOS guidelines, CEN/TC 346 standards). What tools to expect in this application: • 3D annotation in a multi-user collaborative environment. • Hierarchical role and task management for collaborative work. • Export of 3D structures for reuse or analysis. • Generation of 2D documentation derived from 3D models. • Integration of open linked data and metadata standards. 4.2.2.2 VTL – Virtual Transcription Laboratory 9 The Virtual Transcription Laboratory (VTL) training is designed to empower users to collaboratively transcribe, enrich, and manage text-based cultural heritage materials. The training combines automated OCR workflows with expert human input, offering flexible, modular, and accessible learning experiences. Participants will gain practical skills in handling diverse archival and historical documents, transforming them into structured, searchable, and semantically enriched datasets. Target users: • Researchers. • Cultural heritage professionals. • Data managers. • Humanities scholars, and citizen contributors. Goal of the application: • Support collaborative transcription of archival and historical documents. • Guide users through OCR post-correction workflows, transcription standards, semantic enrichment, and crowd-assistance. • Ensure usability and accessibility for academic and non-academic researchers. 9 VTL – Echoes – Eccch ECHOES Project 101157364 – D5.3 Strategy and Roadmap for Capacity Building, Training and Knowledge Transfer 32 Training resources developed within ECHOES will be made available through a range of delivery channels. The umbrella organisations partners of ECHOES, that represent different categories of professionals and researchers, universities alliances with a focus on Cultural Heritage (UNA EUROPA) and other higher education institutions particularly for training in conservation (ENCoRE) could provide an efficient channel of diffusion for the training tools, responding to specific needs and strategies. Larger organisations as ICCROM could also include the training resources in their curricula and thus extend their use. This approach ensures both flexibility and accessibility and will allow us to meet the diverse needs of participating communities. This multi-channel approach will help ensure broader uptake and long-term sustainability of the training materials. The main delivery channel will be the DARIAH Campus, a discovery framework and hosting platform for learning resources for the Arts and Humanities. Content on the DARIAH Campus includes internal and external resources, covering different digital humanities topics, recaps of resources and recording of past training events - and Pathfinders - collections of resources curated by the DARIAH team. Each resource contains full metadata, reuse statements and a full citation for reuse by learners and trainers alike. Examples of other potential platforms that can be used to further disseminate and enhance the discoverability of the ECHOES learning resources are the H2IOSC Training Infrastructure 14 , the Europeana Academy 15 , ARIADNE Research Infrastructure Training Hub 16 , CLARIN Learning Hub 17 , the E-RIHS Academy and SSH Open Marketplace 18 . These platforms have different functionality and/or reach different audiences and communities. The training resources will also be offered for inclusion into the curricula and training platforms of universities and other higher educational institutions, by promoting these in/to their networks and umbrella organisations. Critically, the focus of our approach relies on interconnectivity. Regardless of the final delivery channels selected, the project will prioritise the use of persistent identifiers for training resources, as part of our resource metadata (section 6.7) to ensure that learning resources remain discoverable, accessible, and reusable across different platforms and research communities. 14 https://www.h2iosc.cnr.it/ 15 https://pro.europeana.eu/page/europeana-academy 16 https://training.ariadne-infrastructure.eu/ 17 https://www.clarin.eu/content/learning-hub 18 https://marketplace.sshopencloud.eu/ ECHOES Project 101157364 – D5.3 Strategy and Roadmap for Capacity Building, Training and Knowledge Transfer 33 5.4 Resource metadata and indexing All training objects will be indexed using a shared schema that supports multilingual search, skill tagging, level indication, and competency alignment. Metadata will be published as open linked data whenever possible, e.g. using vocabularies such as LRMI (Learning Resource Metadata Initiative), DCAT-AP, and schema.org. The resource registry might support faceted browsing, recommendations, and export in multiple formats (CSV, RDF, JSON-LD) to ease integration with external systems. Where relevant, metadata will also track provenance (e.g., authorship, revisions, licenses, duration, versioning), learning analytics (views, completions), and connections to communitygenerated feedback (collected via WP4 and T5.1.3). These mechanisms will support not only training delivery but also future evaluation and curriculum updates in line with the ECHOES sustainability strategy. 6. Strategic roadmap This section provides a progressive knowledge flow structured in the following way: • from internal to external: The first phase focuses on internal capacity building, ensuring all consortium partners and members of sister projects, as a single ecosystem, share a common understanding of the ECHOES architecture, workflows, and community principles. This is key to creating a shared knowledge base and a common vocabulary. The second phase extends outward to external users – CHIs researchers, cultural heritage professionals, and community actors identified through WP4 Consultation and workshops covering multiple levels (e.g. European/National/Regional/Local) by adapting the content accordingly - to facilitate adoption, feedback, and sustained engagement with the ECHOES tools and services. • from general to specific: Training evolves from foundational ECHOES Cloud literacy, Open Science and FAIR data principles toward advanced, Applications specific competencies and communitytailored practices. This gradual deepening of expertise ensures that users can meaningfully apply what they learn to their specific operational contexts. This phased progression supports iterative co-design between training and development: early pilot sessions with beta versions of the Applications will both test usability and generate new input for refining training materials in subsequent releases. ECHOES Project 101157364 – D5.3 Strategy and Roadmap for Capacity Building, Training and Knowledge Transfer 34 6.1 Timeline for implementation The ECHOES Curriculum is designed as a living training framework, progressively developed through a phased roadmap to match the project’s evolving infrastructure, tools, and community engagement milestones. The timeline reflects the interdependencies (See Annex 1 Figure 1) among subtasks (T5.3.1–T5.3.5) and aligns with the activation of the Cultural Heritage Cloud, the availability of the Applications, the implementation of cascading grants and capacity building resources from sister projects. Foundational introductory training course (T5.3.1), coordinated by DARIAH, began development in M6 and will be deployed by M24, including foundational knowledge about the “Charter for ECCCH”. From M18, more targeted training kits for the Vertical Applications (T5.3.2, led by META/ETT) will be released, while modular support for cascading grant applicants and grantees (T5.3.3, DARIAH) will be tailored in sync with the launch of grant calls. In particular, the timeline must be aligned with the calendar of Cascading Grant Call 2: projects will be selected in February 2026 and will run for one to two years. During this period, grantees will need to align their activities with WP5 recommendations and integrate the relevant ECHOES training components. Upon completion of their projects, grantees will also be required to deposit and integrate their training outputs on DARIAH-Campus, ensuring long-term visibility and reuse. From M24 onwards, CLARIN will coordinate user journey–based adaptations (T5.3.4), and EUROPEANA will ensure sustainable maintenance of all content (T5.3.5) through periodic updates. This staged deployment ensures relevance, gradual onboarding, and refinement through user feedback. Training materials will be developed progressively in sync with the release of the Vertical Applications, starting with webinars, recordings, and documentation, and expanding as beta versions become available. Any potential delays in VA releases may affect the timing of the training materials; however, this risk is mitigated by preparing content on the underlying cloud features and architectural models. The deployment of training resources will also be coordinated with the engagement of target communities, starting with sister projects and cascading grant teams during ECCCH related events, and subsequently expanding to include ECHOES’ wider audience, such as CHIs, cultural operators, and other stakeholders. This approach ensures that both the content and the learners are onboarded at the right stages, maximizing effectiveness and relevance. ECHOES Project 101157364 – D5.3 Strategy and Roadmap for Capacity Building, Training and Knowledge Transfer 35 6.2 Connections to other Work Packages and broader ecosystem The Curriculum’s development is closely interwoven with other WPs, particularly WP4 (Communities) and WP8 (Vertical Applications). WP4 provides the analytical foundation through its user typologies, survey data, and community workshops (T4.1–T4.3), ensuring that training offers respond to real needs and cultural practices across communities. The alignment with the Charter for ECCCH about common principles and best practice ensures that capacitybuilding efforts uphold shared values. In parallel, WP8 defines the functional scope and usability constraints of the tools to be trained on, from data ingestion to collaborative curation and transcription. WP3 and WP7 are also relevant: WP3 supplies the underlying technical infrastructure and Cloud services that training must interpret and explain, while WP7 will use training feedback and monitoring data to assess impact and suggest iterative improvements. In addition, the Curriculum connects to the broader ECHOES ecosystem, including cascading grants from ECHOES and sister projects, as well as cascading grants from sister projects themselves. Deliverable 3.1 provides a concrete reference for these links ensuring that training not only integrates outputs from multiple WPs but also leverages and disseminates capacitybuilding resources across the wider network. Thus, T5.3 serves as an operational bridge across work packages, translating technical outputs and ethical frameworks into meaningful and reusable educational experiences. 6.3 Sustainability and reuse of resources To ensure continuity beyond the project’s lifecycle, the training resources will be designed for modularity, openness, and interoperability. Resources will be progressively maintained and updated until the end of the project by EUROPEANA (T5.3.5), who will curate versioning, translations, and quality checks in line with updated user needs (as reported via WP4 and WP7). In addition, specific attention will be paid to resource discoverability across multilingual and multidisciplinary contexts, and to the ability of national research infrastructures to embed and repurpose ECHOES modules within their own national training ecosystems (T5.4.3). Sustainability will also be supported by a targeted dissemination strategy, developed in close coordination with WP2, to maximise resource visibility, adoption, and reuse. Training materials will be promoted across university networks, sector-specific professional communities, and programmes offering continuing professional development opportunities. In addition, CLARIN will leverage its network of Knowledge Centres and national consortium libraries to further disseminate and contextualise ECHOES resources, ensuring their integration into established training catalogues and long-term accessibility for diverse user groups. ECHOES Project 101157364 – D5.3 Strategy and Roadmap for Capacity Building, Training and Knowledge Transfer 36 7. Conclusions and next steps 7.1 Immediate follow-up actions The implementation of the ECHOES training roadmap (See Annex 2 Figure 2) marks the strategic transition from theory to action. We aim at aligning capacity-building activities with the progressive deployment of the Cloud and the Vertical Applications, WP5 is willing to ensure that training evolves in parallel with technological readiness and community engagement. The sequence outlined — Cloud literacy, VA adoption, and collaborative practice — establishes a coherent, concrete and scalable framework to sustain long-term growth across the ECHOES ecosystem. In the coming months, priority will be given to finalizing the first batch of general Cloud training modules (T5.3.1) and preparing pilot sessions for internal validation. Concurrently, partners responsible for the Vertical Applications (DARIAH, CNR, META) will start providing documentation and access to prototypes to enable the WP5 team to design the corresponding training kits and demonstration materials to be aligned with each VA’s release schedule. The next phase (Q1 2026) will focus on consolidating these initial materials into modular, multilingual resources integrated within DARIAH Campus and linked to the ECCCH. To enhance discoverability, the project partners can add metadata of the resources to their own discovery platforms, such as Europeana Academy or the H2IOSC Training Infrastructure. Continuous feedback loops with WP3, WP4, WP7, WP8 and WP9 will ensure the refinement and sustainability of the resources. This will also facilitate the collection of input from sister projects and ensure their capacity-building materials are accessible via the Cloud. Looking ahead, the follow-up deliverable D5.2 (due in M24, May 2025) will define the workflow for developing training resources within ECHOES and the M31, due the same month, will consist of a comprehensive and detailed status report enabling the assessment of progress towards the publication of D5.4 (due in M30, November 2026). This Deliverable will formalize the curriculum architecture, catalogue of resources, and evaluation framework, documenting the transition from the current strategic vision to operational training assets. In parallel, WP5 will engage sister projects and cascading grant teams through structured recommendations and the Integration Task Force questionnaire, while fostering collaborative learning opportunities among project partners, ensuring that ECHOES training remains an open, evolving, and community-informed ecosystem.
