This article analyzes the psychological mechanisms of self-education in the process of developing cognitive abilities in students. Cognitive abilities include processes such as perception, memory, thinking, attention, imagination, and logical reasoning. Their development is crucial for students to deeply grasp knowledge, apply it in practice, solve problem situations, and cultivate creative thinking. The article provides detailed information and examples regarding the extent to which cognitive abilities develop in students. Keywords: ability, cognitive, competence, memory, thinking, developmental ability, mental function, student. Introduction Modern technologies have not only simplified human life but also reduced the need to exercise one’s intellect. In everyday life and often at work, we use only a fraction of our natural potential. As a result, even young people frequently face memory problems. The brain’s abilities are the result of its constant and disciplined functioning, similar to strengthening muscles through sports. Therefore, it is important to support the activity of this unique organ and provide it with necessary stimulation. In today’s educational process, forming cognitive competencies in students is a key task. Cognitive competencies are a set of abilities to receive, analyze, solve problems, and think creatively. In today’s educational process, the formation of cognitive competencies in students is considered an important task. Cognitive competencies represent a set of abilities that include receiving knowledge, analyzing it, solving problems, and engaging in creative thinking. The issue of developing cognitive abilities in students is one of the most pressing directions in modern pedagogy and psychology. Education in the 21st century is aimed at shaping human capital, fostering creativity, and promoting independent thinking, with students’ self-education processes holding particular importance. Cognitive abilities comprise a complex set of psychological processes such as perception, thinking, memory, attention, problem-solving, and creative approaches. The development of these abilities depends not only on the knowledge provided by teachers but also directly on students’ self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-education mechanisms. The psychological mechanisms of self-education contribute to the development of students’ cognitive abilities by fostering internal motivation, reflective thinking, self-assessment, and self-control skills. This process is carried out in alignment with the student’s personal goals, values, and aspirations. For instance, when a student recognizes their need for learning, they independently explore additional sources, ask questions, and seek answers. As a result, the internal mechanisms of self-education lead to a deeper and more stable formation of cognitive abilities. In today’s educational system, the task is not limited to students’ assimilation of readymade knowledge, but also includes teaching them independent thinking, problem-solving, and creative approaches. From this perspective, studying and applying the psychological mechanisms SCIENCE AND INNOVATION INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC JOURNAL VOLUME 4 ISSUE 12 DECEMBER 2025 ISSN: 2181-3337 | SCIENTISTS.UZ 144 of self-education is a significant factor in increasing educational effectiveness and in shaping students’ cognitive competencies. This article examines the psychological mechanisms of selfeducation in the development of students’ cognitive abilities from both theoretical and practical perspectives. It also discusses the motivational, reflective, and volitional mechanisms of selfeducation, their role in the educational process, and their impact on students’ personal development. Main Part In pedagogy, the development of cognitive abilities fulfills the functions of the brain and cognition. Cognitive functions include memory, attention, perception, intellect, speech, and the ability to perform certain actions. Cognitive abilities are the brain’s functions of receiving, processing, and storing information. Their development in students involves several important elements essential for intellectual and emotional growth: memory, attention, planning and execution of actions (praxis), recognition and interpretation of information (gnosis), intellect, and speech. Memory. Students gradually develop memory: first learning to remember simple things such as faces and objects, then mastering more complex concepts, rules, and knowledge. Memory is the foundation for further learning and acquiring new skills. Attention. The ability to focus on a specific task or object. Students gradually learn to direct and control their attention toward important aspects of activity. In preschool children, cognitive development is often linked to improved ability to concentrate on learning tasks. Praxis. The ability to plan and perform actions. This skill is crucial for developing coordination and the ability to control one’s body in space. Praxis is especially important in early childhood when motor skills are formed. Gnosis. The ability to recognize and understand information received through sensory organs. Students learn to identify objects and sounds, helping them orient themselves in the surrounding world. Intellect and Thinking. These enable students to analyze information, solve problems, draw conclusions, and predict outcomes. They play a vital role in adapting to new conditions and learning. Speech. A means of communication that helps express thoughts, emotions, and desires. Speech develops in stages, from simple sounds to complex sentences and abstract ideas. It is closely connected with other cognitive functions such as memory and thinking. Cognitive development is the process of forming and improving mental functions. These functions allow individuals to think, analyze, remember, solve problems, and interact with the world. Students’ cognitive abilities begin developing at an early age and improve as they grow. Parents and educators play a crucial role in stimulating these processes, especially during preschool and school years. Cognitive flexibility is the ability of the brain to adapt behavior and thinking to new, changing, or unexpected situations. It helps us daily, from choosing breakfast to selecting an educational institution for our children. Games for cognitive development. Memory, attention, and logical thinking can be stimulated through games such as puzzles, riddles, and attention-training activities. These enhance learning abilities and accelerate knowledge acquisition. Why Does Memory Decline? SCIENCE AND INNOVATION INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC JOURNAL VOLUME 4 ISSUE 12 DECEMBER 2025 ISSN: 2181-3337 | SCIENTISTS.UZ 145 The ability to memorize and reproduce information is a skill that can be developed. Every person can strengthen it through special methods and exercises. Examples: Drawing figures as mirror reflections Associating numbers and words with shapes they resemble Number Russian Word Uzbek Translation Explanation (Shape Similarity) 0 яйцо egg Shape resembles an egg 1 свеча candle Shape resembles a standing candle 2 утка duck Shape resembles a duck’s bent body 3 птица bird Shape resembles a flying bird’s wings 4 парусник sailboat Shape resembles a sailboat 5 детская горка slide Shape resembles a hill/slide 6 змея snake Shape resembles a coiled snake 7 овраг ravine Shape resembles a cliff edge 8 снеговик snowman Shape resembles a snowman’s two parts 9 воздушный шарик balloon Shape resembles a hanging balloon Relaxation Exercise: Rest by the Sea For adults. Lie comfortably, close your eyes, and listen to my voice. Breathe deeply and easily. Imagine yourself in a beautiful place by the sea. It is a wonderful summer day. The sky is blue; the sun is warm. You feel completely calm and happy. Gentle waves reach your feet, bringing refreshing coolness. A light breeze touches your body. The air is pure and clear. Your face, neck, shoulders, back, stomach, arms, and legs are filled with pleasant energy. Your body feels light, strong, and obedient. Factors Affecting Cognitive Development Students’ cognitive abilities depend on many factors, including daily routine, nutrition, physical activity, and specially selected exercises: Daily routine. Regular sleep and rest improve memory and concentration. Nutrition. Healthy food rich in vitamins, minerals, and beneficial fats stimulates brain activity. Fish, nuts, and fruits enhance memory development. Physical activity. Exercise strengthens the body and supports brain development. Active students acquire new skills more easily and focus better on tasks. Self-Education Mechanisms Through self-education, students consciously control their thinking, monitor themselves, and strive for self-improvement. As a result, they not only acquire knowledge but also learn to apply it in practice, think creatively, and make independent decisions. A cognitively developed student: - acts consciously; - understands events; - memorizes information; - concentrates attention; - possesses imagination; - makes rational decisions; SCIENCE AND INNOVATION INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC JOURNAL VOLUME 4 ISSUE 12 DECEMBER 2025 ISSN: 2181-3337 | SCIENTISTS.UZ 146 - thinks logically. Such students can: - absorb large amounts of information; - memorize and analyze quickly; - draw correct conclusions; - approach tasks creatively; - focus on what truly matters; - use time efficiently. Conclusion Psychological mechanisms of self-education play a crucial role in developing students’ cognitive abilities. Through these mechanisms, students consciously manage their thought processes, control themselves, and strive for self-improvement. Consequently, they not only master knowledge but also apply it in practice, develop creative thinking, and gain the ability to make independent decisions. In the development of students’ cognitive abilities, the psychological mechanisms of self-education hold an important place. These mechanisms activate students’ internal motivation, foster self-awareness and self-control skills, and help to develop reflective thinking. As a result, students do not merely accept knowledge in a ready-made form, but instead analyze it independently, process it creatively, and find effective solutions to problem situations. Integrating the psychological mechanisms of self-education into the educational process makes it possible to form cognitive competencies, develop independent thinking, encourage creativity, and align personal goals with the learning process. This not only increases the effectiveness of education but also ensures the personal development of students. Thus, in modern education, the in-depth study and practical application of the psychological mechanisms of self-education are essential factors in enhancing students’ intellectual potential and in shaping them as independent and creative individuals.
