SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO THE MODERN EDUCATION SYSTEM Vol. 3 No. 6 (2025) 42 THE ESSENCE OF TEACHING FOREIGN LANGUAGE PRONUNCIATION Jizzakh branch of the National University of Uzbekistan named after Mirzo Ulugbek department of Foreign languages Phylology and foreign languages Student of group 103-23 Sanoyeva Sabina Akbar qizi Supervisor:Zilola Abduraxmanova Yoqubjon qizi Abstract Teaching foreign language pronunciation is a central aspect of language education because it directly affects intelligibility, communicative effectiveness, and learner confidence. Pronunciation instruction includes the development of accurate articulation of sounds as well as mastery of stress, rhythm, and intonation patterns. This article provides an expanded, original, and plagiarism-resistant discussion of the essence of teaching foreign language pronunciation, examining its linguistic, psychological, and pedagogical foundations. The study highlights the importance of systematic and communicative pronunciation teaching in achieving successful spoken interaction. Key words: foreign language pronunciation, pronunciation teaching, phonetics and phonology, intelligibility, oral communication Introduction In foreign language learning, pronunciation occupies a unique and influential position. While learners may acquire grammar rules and vocabulary through reading and writing, pronunciation primarily develops through listening and speaking. Inaccurate pronunciation can lead to misunderstanding even when other language skills are relatively strong. For this reason, pronunciation teaching is essential for effective oral communication. SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO THE MODERN EDUCATION SYSTEM Vol. 3 No. 6 (2025) 43 The essence of teaching foreign language pronunciation lies not in achieving nativelike speech, but in helping learners produce clear, understandable, and contextually appropriate spoken language. Modern language pedagogy views pronunciation as an integral component of communicative competence rather than a peripheral skill. Therefore, pronunciation should be taught continuously and systematically throughout the learning process. Linguistic Foundations of Pronunciation Teaching Pronunciation teaching is based on the principles of phonetics and phonology. Phonetics focuses on how sounds are produced, transmitted, and perceived, while phonology examines how sounds function within a language system. These two areas provide the scientific foundation for pronunciation instruction. Learners of a foreign language often experience difficulty because the sound system of the target language differs from that of their mother tongue. Differences in vowel length, consonant clusters, or stress placement may cause persistent pronunciation errors. Understanding these contrasts allows teachers to anticipate learner difficulties and design targeted instructional activities. Segmental Features in Pronunciation Instruction Segmental features refer to individual sounds, including vowels and consonants. Teaching segmental pronunciation involves helping learners recognize, produce, and distinguish sounds that may not exist in their native language. Minimal pair exercises, phonetic transcription, and focused listening activities are commonly used techniques. Accurate production of segmental features contributes to clarity at the word level. However, overemphasis on individual sounds without context may limit learners’ ability to use pronunciation effectively in communication. Therefore, segmental instruction should be integrated into meaningful speech activities. Suprasegmental Features and Their Importance Suprasegmental features include word stress, sentence stress, rhythm, and intonation. These elements play a crucial role in conveying meaning, emphasis, and SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO THE MODERN EDUCATION SYSTEM Vol. 3 No. 6 (2025) 44 emotion in spoken language. Research has shown that suprasegmental errors often cause greater communication problems than segmental errors. Teaching suprasegmental features helps learners understand how meaning changes depending on stress and intonation patterns. For example, incorrect sentence stress may confuse listeners or alter intended meaning. As a result, effective pronunciation instruction places strong emphasis on rhythm and intonation in connected speech. Psychological Aspects of Learning Pronunciation Pronunciation learning is closely connected with psychological factors such as motivation, attitude, and anxiety. Many learners feel embarrassed or afraid of making pronunciation mistakes, which can reduce their willingness to speak. A supportive and encouraging classroom environment is therefore essential. Learners also differ in their ability to perceive and produce new sounds. Age, exposure to the target language, and individual learning strategies influence pronunciation development. Teachers should consider these factors and set realistic pronunciation goals focused on intelligibility rather than perfection. Communicative Approach to Pronunciation Teaching In communicative language teaching, pronunciation is taught through meaningful interaction rather than isolated drills. Learners practice pronunciation while performing communicative tasks such as role plays, discussions, and presentations. This approach allows pronunciation to develop naturally within reallife contexts. Pronunciation instruction is closely linked to listening skills. By exposing learners to authentic spoken input, teachers help them develop sound discrimination and awareness of natural speech patterns. This integration supports both receptive and productive language skills. The Use of Technology in Pronunciation Teaching Modern technology has significantly expanded opportunities for pronunciation practice. Audio and video materials provide models of authentic speech, while pronunciation software and mobile applications offer individualized SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO THE MODERN EDUCATION SYSTEM Vol. 3 No. 6 (2025) 45 practice and feedback. Speech recognition tools allow learners to monitor their pronunciation and track progress independently. Technology also supports autonomous learning, enabling learners to practice pronunciation outside the classroom. When used appropriately, digital tools enhance motivation and provide valuable exposure to diverse accents and speaking styles. The Teacher’s Role in Teaching Pronunciation The teacher plays a key role in guiding pronunciation development. Teachers serve as language models, provide clear explanations, and give corrective feedback. Effective feedback should be constructive and focused on improvement rather than criticism. Teachers must also decide which pronunciation features to prioritize based on learners’ needs and proficiency levels. By setting achievable goals and encouraging self-awareness, teachers help learners develop long-term pronunciation skills. Conclusion The essence of teaching foreign language pronunciation lies in enabling learners to communicate clearly, confidently, and effectively. Pronunciation teaching integrates linguistic knowledge, psychological awareness, and communicative practice. Both segmental and suprasegmental features are essential components of intelligible speech and should be taught in a balanced manner. By adopting a learner-centered and communicative approach, teachers can reduce pronunciation-related difficulties and support the development of oral competence. In modern foreign language education, pronunciation remains a vital bridge between language knowledge and successful spoken communication.
