Eskola, "The Provenance of the Swedish-Finnish Manuscript Fragment Collection: A Case Study of Early Modern Parchment Reuse". Fragmentology, vol. 8 (2025). The article was written as part of the ERC-funded project BOMPAC (Books of the Medieval Parish Church, 2021–2025, Grant number: 948497). The dataset was compiled to its final form in November 2025, and draws on the broader data produced collaboratively within the BOMPAC project, see Eskola, S., Tahkokallio, J., & Kaasik, H. (2025). General information: This dataset contains two datafiles (both in .xlsx and .csv format) and this readme file. The first data file lists fragments and the second manuscripts. The dataset provides the data used to analyse manuscripts and fragments discussed in the article. Descriptions (below): - File 1: Fragments - File 2: Manuscripts - List of datasets published by the BOMPAC project 2 File 1: Fragments This file provides metadata on the fragments discussed. It consists of twenty-one columns, a header row, and 1,170 data rows. Each row represents a single fragment that is part of one of the 116 manuscripts (including one incunable) discussed in the article. (The row number is higher than the number of covers discussed in the article as not all fragments constitute an account cover on their own.) Some manuscripts consist of fragments under more than one shelfmark. In the 'MS shelfmark' column, all fragments interpreted to originate from the same book are organised under a single shelfmark. The references for each fragment, including other manuscript shelfmarks, are provided in the 'Fragment reference' column. The 'reuse bailiwick' column contains numbers that reference bailiwicks using the still-useful numbering system introduced in the seminal work on the Swedish local administration by J. A. Almquist (Den civila lokalförvaltningen i Sverige 1523-1630: med särskild hänsyn till den kamerala indelningen, Stockholm 1917–1923). Numbers reference the collection Helsinki, Kansallisarkisto, Voudintilit (KA XXXX). Category Categories on the fragments’ content Genre Type Work Author 3 File 2: Manuscripts This file provides metadata on the manuscripts discussed. It consists of twenty-three columns, a header row, and 116 rows. Each row represents a single manuscript (including one incunable). The fragments the manuscripts consist of are listed in file 1 and can be consulted there. The 'analysis' column contains manuscript analyses, which, at times, reference the still-useful bailiwick numbering system in the seminal work on the Swedish local administration by J. A. Almquist (Den civila lokalförvaltningen i Sverige 1523-1630: med särskild hänsyn till den kamerala indelningen, Stockholm 1917–1923; see above for link to the work). The bailiwick reference numbers are given as "F. XXX" (F for fögderi). The analysis can also be read without consideration to these numbers, which are not provided systematically. The fragments are, for the most part, included in one of two databases: i) Medeltida pergamentomslag (MPO; https://sok.riksarkivet.se/mpo) of the Swedish National Archives and ii) Fragmenta membranea (FM; https://fragmenta.kansalliskirjasto.fi) of the Finnish National Library.
