Universität Bern, Open Science Team , Bern June 3, 2025 4 Roles and support IT services (University Library): •Application management & software development •Second-level support Data stewards (Team Open Science, University Library): •Consulting and first-level support •Coordination with IT services (as service owner) and other Bern University units (e.g., Data Science Lab or Digital Humanities) What is offered •Server infrastructure, Image & Presentation APIs (v2.1 & v3.0) •Self-upload solution for images and metadata •A web interface for project-specific administration •Centrally maintained in the long term by library’s IT services (Note: presentation website or viewer is not part of the IIIF service) IIIF service from Bern University Library
Universität Bern, Open Science Team , Bern June 3, 2025 5 •The service is offered to researchers at the University of Bern •The project’s presentation platform must be financed and managed in the long term •Users must manage and maintain their website and viewer themselves •Users must clarify and guarantee the rights to publish the images •Users must prepare images for self-upload and provide basic metadata •Cost management: One-time costs for research projects and funding from the digitisation strategy at the University of Bern (to guarantee storage and access for 15 years) •A contractual agreement is required, signed by the project/platform lead and the leading director of the institute (to guarantee long-term responsibility) Service conditions

Universität Bern, Open Science Team , Bern June 3, 2025 8 Some user-friendly features •The easy-to-use GUI allows image and metadata uploads and administration without programming skills (see the next two slides) •The multi-tenant concept allows access to one’s own IIIF project only and enables an easy rights management •The image API allows access to image with original file name as alternative to GUID: •URL request with GUID: https://iiif.ub.unibe.ch/image/v2.1/e61b22ed-3d94-4322-9633-e4b9a3df1def/full/max/0/default.jpg •URL request with project slug and original file name: https://iiif.ub.unibe.ch/image/v2.1/haller/gga_00001_001.tif/full/max/0/default.jpg •(This is possible in a similar way for the Presentation API with Collection and Sequence names)
