Introduction. Like all linguistic units, punctuation marks are regulated by established norms that perform specific communicative and stylistic functions within various discourse types. These norms are systematically described in scholarly literature and illustrated through representative examples. A linguistic norm is defined as “the set of socially established and codified rules and possibilities governing the use of language units in particular forms of speech” [1, p. 7]. Although linguistic norms are formally codified in academic sources, they are not static: “just as rapidly unfolding sociohistorical processes influence the development of language, they also exert a direct impact on its practical norms. Consequently, in response to the demands of linguistic evolution, normative standards require continuous observation, reassessment, and regulation” [2, p. 14]. As emphasized in the cited studies, norms governing punctuation marks, like those of other linguistic units, are subject to diachronic change. Literature Review. The earliest punctuation norms were characterized by relatively simple functions; however, as writing systems evolved, these norms gradually incorporated new functions shaped by punctuation usage (usus) and authorial punctuation (individual stylistic practice). The analysis of literary texts demonstrates that even today many punctuation practices have not yet been fully standardized, and numerous non-conventional punctuation marks employed within individual authorial styles continue to perform distinctive poetic functions [3, p. 56]. Although the linguopoetics of punctuation marks has not been examined as an independent field within Uzbek linguistics, their initial normative functions were addressed by A. Fitrat, while the ISSN: 2582-4686 SJIF 2021-3.261,SJIF 20222.889, 2024-6.875 ResearchBib IF: 9.948 / 2024 VOLUME-5, ISSUE-12 1294 historical development of punctuation was explored in the works of H. G‘oziyev, G‘. Abdurahmonov, and R. A. Alimuhammedov. Contemporary approaches to the formation and stabilization of modern punctuation norms are reflected in the studies of K. Nazarov, H. G‘afurov, S. Karimov, N. Mahmudov, and B. Baxriddinova, as well as in scholarly articles by F. T. Karimov, O‘. J. Esonov, and N. M. Qambarov. In addition, significant insights into punctuation theory and practice are presented in the academic research of D. To‘rayeva, I.Nurmurotov. Research Methodology. The present study analyzes the theoretical interpretation of poetic text punctuation in contemporary Uzbek linguistics, focusing on the issues of authorial punctuation and punctuation norms. Based on the poetry of Zebo Mirzo, the research identifies the normative functions of punctuation marks and elucidates their role in expressing poetic intention. The relevance of the study is grounded in the fact that, within poetic texts, punctuation marks function not only as grammatical devices but also as linguopoetic and semiotic units that contribute to meaning-making. As noted in linguistic and literary scholarship, the primary sphere in which the aesthetic function of language is realized is the literary text; therefore, the study of its specific features necessitates an interdisciplinary approach. This involves the integration of literary theory, literary history, and poetics with linguistic stylistics, historical linguistics, lexicology, semasiology, etymology, and grammar [4, p. 25]. Within poetic discourse, all linguistic units serve to articulate the author’s artistic intention, and punctuation marks, alongside other language elements, perform a significant functional role in shaping the aesthetic and semantic structure of the text. Results and Discussion. The analysis reveals that punctuation norms are largely preserved in Zebo Mirzo‘s poetry, while deviations from these norms function as conventionalized phenomena that contribute to the formation of the poet’s individual style. Within the framework of authorial punctuation, certain punctuation marks are employed even in contexts where they are not grammatically obligatory, with the explicit aim of enhancing poetic expressiveness. As a result, the interaction between normative and non-conventional uses of punctuation creates a coherent aesthetic system within the poetic text. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that punctuation marks play a significant role in the formation of detached constructions, which, in turn, serve as an important factor in shaping the rhythmic and intonational structure of poetic discourse. The potential of punctuation marks to generate deictic and sign-based synonymy is also identified and theoretically substantiated, showing that such usage expands the semantic scope of poetic meaning. Aesthetic function. Focusing on the statistics of punctuation marks, it is evident that the ellipsis predominates in artistic style, particularly in lyrical genres, surpassing other punctuation marks in frequency and functional significance. Specifically, Zebo Mirzo‘s poetry collection “Ishq…” comprises 64 poems, in which the ellipsis occurs 347 times. Of these instances, 286 appear individually, while 61 are combined with either the exclamation or the question mark. These statistical data indicate that, within the literary style, the ellipsis serves multiple normative and nonnormative functions, acting as a primary device for conveying abstract concepts and enhancing the expressive depth of the poetic text. Colon. In the analysis of literary texts, the colon is primarily used in compound sentences with balanced structures to clarify or explain the first component of the sentence: Lahzani milliard yillarga cho‘zdim — Qalbimni qamradi karaxtlik, hayrat: ISSN: 2582-4686 SJIF 2021-3.261,SJIF 20222.889, 2024-6.875 ResearchBib IF: 9.948 / 2024 VOLUME-5, ISSUE-12 1295 Tog‘lar tizmasiday qotdilar to‘zg‘in — Horigan to‘lqinlar qoldilar yayrab. (Z.Mirzo) In compound sentences where the first component is explained, the second part following the colon fully conveys the idea and draws the addressee’s attention to the event. It is known that if a generalizing word precedes enumerated elements, the colon is used to separate them. In such cases, the colon serves to direct attention to the enumerated items and emphasizes them. “The pause at the place of the colon is usually longer than the pauses between the enumerated elements. In such sentences, the generalizing word is pronounced with an intonation of emphasis” [5, p. 59]: Shunday o‘yin topdim ermakka bu dam, Jonimdan o‘tkazdi hayot maromi: Netay, tog‘lar mustar turgani-turgan, Netay, dengizlarning yo‘qdir oromi. (Z.Mirzo) Occasionally, in literary texts, enumerated elements are shifted to the end of the sentence rather than following the generalizing word. In such cases, the colon is employed by the author to separate the enumerated elements from the rest of the sentence, thereby drawing attention to them and enhancing the expressive impact of the discourse. Moreover, the use of the colon in this manner is intrinsically connected with the stylistic features of the text: Uzoq-uzoqlarga qarab angladim: Qaydanman, qayonman va kimnikiman? Ko‘nglimniki edim va bir kun bildim, Undan ham oldinroq rabbimnikiman. (Z.Mirzo) Parentheses. Among punctuation marks, the poetic potential of parentheses is most prominently manifested when they are used for insertions. In the Uzbek language, parenthetical constructions serve stylistic purposes and convey expressive-emotional nuances. Through this punctuation mark, the author’s subjective approach to the conveyed information is revealed, as well as the writer’s various attitudes, including expressiveness, impact, and emotional intensity. Insertions may take the form of single words, phrases, sentences, or even larger textual units: Yuragimning ostidami, Yo ko‘kda tun pallasi, (Sarvi suman soyasida, Hurlar aytar allasin) Malaklarning qanotida Nurdek uxlar bir go‘dak. (Z.Mirzo) As evidenced by these examples, parenthetical constructions, while grammatically independent, remain semantically integrated with the main content of the sentence. Insertions serve as an essential tool for ensuring the completeness and clarity of the discourse and can be employed across various stylistic contexts. Exclamation mark. The functions of this punctuation mark are primarily associated with emotion and are realized in speech through complex prosodic phenomena, such as intonation. Specifically, when occurring at the end of imperative, declarative, interrogative, or desiderative sentences, it conveys a range of semantic contents while simultaneously reflecting emotional and expressive intensity. (Z.Mirzo) Sometimes, when nominative sentences express various emotions or heightened excitement, an exclamation mark is used instead of a period: Ey Xudo! Izn ber yaralmoq uchun! Imkon ber, bo‘layin qaytadan paydo! Men Odam emasman! Men bir ojiza – Men axir Havvoman, Havvoman, Xudo! (Z.Mirzo) Additionally, the exclamation mark is used after vocative elements conveying emotion, following emphatically repeated words that serve to intensify meaning, after words or sentences performing various emotional functions within communicative contexts, and after headings that carry an exclamatory sense. Kechangdan qochmassan, Xayolingdan ham. Azobing, gunohing – Mendan Endi kech! Endi, kech... Endi kech... Endi kech... (Z.Mirzo) Conclusion. In conclusion, in Zebo Mirzo‘s poetry, punctuation marks function not only as instruments ensuring grammatical norms but also as significant linguopoetic units conveying poetic intent. The study reveals that, while conventional punctuation norms are largely preserved, the poet’s individual style is manifested through authorial punctuation. The multifunctional use of punctuation serves to express emotional states, internal pauses, semantic ambiguity, and rhythmic structures. Notably, marks such as the ellipsis, dash, and comma create referential synonymy in poetic texts, enhancing the depth of artistic meaning. This interplay of conventional and non-conventional punctuation illustrates how punctuation marks collaboratively form a unified aesthetic system. Thus, the normative and individual application of punctuation in Zebo Mirzo‘s poetry is scientifically substantiated as a key factor that amplifies poetic cognition and aesthetic impact.
