THE UNITY OF NATIONAL, MORAL AND UNIVERSAL HUMAN VALUES IS A CONDITION FOR THE STRUCTURE OF A MODERN FAMILY

Səyyarə, Cəfərova

Abstract

In the modern era, the family, as one of the main social institutions of society, plays the role of both the protector of national identity and the bearer of universal values. For the healthy and sustainable development of a family, it is not enough to be satisfied with national and moral values alone; the unity of these values with universal principles ensures the sustainable development of the family both locally and globally. National leader Heydar Aliyev assesses national and moral values as «the main factor shaping the morality of the people» [1]. According to him, the family is the main means of transmitting these values. At the same time, the challenges of the modern era dictate the need for the assimilation of such universal principles as tolerance, human rights and a multicultural approach in the family. The article notes that the synthesis of national and moral and universal values has become the main condition of the modern institution of the family. This unity determines not only the internal harmony of the family, but also its connection with society and its influence on the upbringing of future generations. Such families are the foundation of a healthy, tolerant and highly moral society.

In the modern era of globalization and digital transformation, the family remains the primary institution responsible for shaping an individual’s moral consciousness, national identity, and social responsibility. Despite the dynamic development of social systems and technological progress, the family continues to perform its historical function – to transmit values that ensure the moral continuity and spiritual stability of society. The interaction between national, moral, and universal human values forms the basis for this process, determining the ethical integrity and sustainability of both the family and the wider community. Throughout history, the Azerbaijani people have built their cultural identity upon a deep sense of morality, respect for traditions, and adherence to ethical principles. These values, rooted in the philosophy of national unity and humanism, have helped the nation preserve its moral heritage even under challenging historical circumstances. The teachings of national leader Heydar Aliyev underscore that national and spiritual values are «the main factor shaping the morality of the people» [1; 54]. He consistently emphasized that the family serves as the primary medium for transmitting these values from generation to generation. In the twenty-first century, new challenges such as globalization, digital communication, migration, and cultural diversity have redefined the moral environment in which families operate. The modern family must reconcile its national identity with the universal values of tolerance, equality, and human rights. The process of harmonizing these dimensions requires a balance between preservation and adaptation – between safeguarding moral traditions and embracing global ethical norms that promote intercultural understanding. The relevance of studying the unity of national, moral, and universal human values lies in the growing necessity to maintain social harmony and moral resilience in the face of rapidly changing cultural paradigms. The family, as a micro-model of society, becomes the space where these values are tested, negotiated, and transmitted. By integrating moral education with national traditions and universal principles, it is possible to cultivate generations that are both patriotic and globally conscious – loyal to their roots yet open to humanity as a whole. This article aims to analyze the interrelationship between national, moral, and universal human values within the structure of the modern family, explore the mechanisms of their interaction in the context of Azerbaijani cultural and pedagogical traditions, and identify the socio-ethical outcomes of their synthesis. The study uses descriptive, comparative, and analytical methods to demonstrate that the unity of these values ensures the internal harmony of the family, strengthens its link with society, and contributes to the sustainable moral development of the nation. Discussion. The family, as the oldest and most enduring social institution, performs multiple functions that go beyond biological reproduction or economic cooperation. It is the moral foundation of society, the primary environment for the transmission of cultural traditions, and the first school of civic responsibility and ethical education. Through the family, national and moral values are inherited, reinterpreted, and adapted to modern conditions, ensuring the spiritual continuity of the nation. For centuries, our people have strived for sovereignty and the restoration of their national identity. In recent history, during the aggressive war initiated by Armenian nationalists in Karabakh – a beautiful region of Azerbaijan – aimed at the seizure of our lands, hundreds of © Sayara Jafarova SAHIB., 2025 Стаття поширюється на умовах ліцензії CC BY 4.0 Актуальні питання культурології. Випуск 24/2025 111 young defenders of our homeland lost their lives, and the living conditions of the population became severely strained. Nevertheless, our nation endured these hardships with resilience, preserved its national dignity and identity, and resolutely stood in defense of the state in order to ensure its further consolidation. Our national and moral values have been manifested in our people throughout history and have distinguished us from other nations. What is meant by the moral value of the multinational Azerbaijani people, to which we attach great importance today? A moral value is a shared worldview, purpose, moral norms, and convictions that the majority of members of any social group or society consider to be correct and essential for the preservation and continuity of their physical and spiritual existence [1; 54]. The fundamental values that the state seeks to cultivate today through the effective use of all available resources include: commitment to justice, emphasis on family unity, the fostering of patriotism, respect for laws and religion, as well as tolerance, diligence, hospitality, and helpfulness [4; 77]. The national leader Heydar Aliyev noted: «Every nation has its own mentality. The mentality of our Azerbaijani people is its great wealth» [6; 32]. He emphasized the importance of preserving national and spiritual values and passing them on to future generations. T. Aliyeva observed that «the family, as one of the fundamental institutions of society and the first stage in the process of human socialization, changes and develops together with the surrounding world» [2; 101]. She highlights both the influence of the family on society and the reciprocal influence of society on the family. A. Hasanli stated that «our people have created their customs and traditions, national and spiritual values over hundreds and thousands of years, and it is precisely these values that today shape the morality of our people» [3; 65]. She places particular emphasis on the importance of preserving national and spiritual values and transmitting them to future generations. Today, the preservation of our national values and their transmission to future generations is more relevant than ever. Our national values have a profound impact on the formation of the Azerbaijani people and play a crucial role in strengthening our national statehood [1; 112]. National and moral values should be understood as encompassing the following: national ideology, national history, national language, our religion, national culture and art, national literature, national self-consciousness, the family, our great historical figures, our national music, mugham, as well as our folklore, which incorporates individual memory, the memory of the ethnos, and the collective memory of the nation and the people [4; 89]. It is no coincidence that the national leader Heydar Aliyev emphasized that religion is one of the most important elements of national and spiritual values. He stated that a society divided into nations and tribes must also be distinguished by its national and moral values. His words «Our religion is the national and spiritual wealth of our people» succinctly summarize his view on religion [6; 54]. Heydar Aliyev believed that the acceptance of our religion as a system of divine moral values would play a positive role, particularly in the upbringing of youth. Building on the idea of Azerbaijani identity, Heydar Aliyev called on all citizens of the country, regardless of their nationality, race, or social background, to demonstrate solidarity in the name of the common Homeland [1; 145]. The prominent statesman Heydar Aliyev, who was deeply familiar with our national values, advised preserving and promoting the customs and traditions inherent to our people [6; 60]. The family, often regarded as a «small state», represents the first social institution among people. This small entity, united by spiritual and emotional bonds and reflecting the common interests of individuals, at the same time constitutes the foundation of a strong state and nation [2; 119]. In recent times, greater attention has been given to universal human values in family upbringing. In the context of globalization and integration into Europe, our national and spiritual values must be protected and further developed. Every Azerbaijani family should incorporate both national identity and communal unity into the process of family upbringing [7; 44]. In order to accurately define the essence of the concept of «education in the national spirit», it is necessary to consider the notions of «nationality», «national identity», «nationalism», «national pride», and «internationalism» [1; 133]. All of this underscores the importance of elevating the issue of preserving and developing national spiritual and moral qualities to the level of state policy in every country and addressing it accordingly. In the process of upbringing, it is particularly important to promote those forms of universal human values that are recognized by the peoples of the world, have stood the test of history, and positively contribute to the formation of a healthy spiritual personality, without contradicting our national and spiritual values [7; 57]. When we speak of «nationality», we refer to a return to one’s national identity. When we speak of the culture of national identity, we mean the distinctive features that reflect the existence of a nation – customs and traditions, national language, national music and visual arts, national literature, the national symbols of the republic, loyalty to one’s roots, awareness of one’s dignity, and the expectation and encouragement of national honor [3; 88]. In general, modern Azerbaijani families place particular emphasis on universal human values. At the same Альманах наукового товариства «Афіна» кафедри культурології та музеєзнавства Рівненського державного гуманітарного університету 112 time, our national and moral values should also become an integral part of family upbringing [2; 140]. It is our sacred duty to preserve our customs and traditions, as well as our national and moral values, which have endured through the centuries and survived to the present day. In the process of promoting gender equality, remembering our progressive customs related to women, which have withstood the test of time, and using them as a means of upbringing will lead to more successful outcomes [5; 92]. To preserve and develop our national moral and ethical qualities, it is necessary to encourage the labor of ordinary workers producing material goods and to treat them with respect [4; 101]. Radio, television, and the press should promote their creative work, and the performances and contributions of the intelligentsia should reach a wider audience. Mass media and social media play a significant role in the moral development of society and in strengthening family values. Nowadays, the information and behavioral models transmitted through television, the internet and social networks have a direct impact on the worldview, family relations and moral perspectives of young generations. Therefore, protecting national and moral values within the information space and developing educational programs that promote the importance of the family institution and the necessity of moral principles is a crucial task [2; 153]. The primary objective of upbringing in the family is not merely to provide children with knowledge but to cultivate in them such qualities as patriotism, diligence, responsibility and humanity. The internal climate of the family, the attitude of parents toward each other and their children form the foundation of children’s behavioral culture. Thus, the family becomes the main bearer of both national and universal values. When national and moral values prevail within the family, young people preserve their national identity, maintain moral integrity and develop as worthy members of society. Conversely, the loss of these values leads to alienation in family relations, the rise of individualism and the weakening of social responsibility, which in turn may undermine national unity. If alongside national values, universal principles are also properly applied in family upbringing, it enhances the quality of family relationships and strongly influences the development of youth as individuals. In this sense, the family is not only a biological and legal union but also a moral center and the core of human relations. The social, economic and cultural changes taking place in the modern world also affect the institution of the family. The acceleration of information flow, the influence of technology on human relationships and the dominance of material values over moral principles call for a new outlook on family values. Therefore, along with the preservation of national and moral values in family upbringing, it is essential to integrate universal values such as tolerance, humanism and multiculturalism [3; 115]. To ensure social stability and moral elevation within society, it is essential to strengthen the institution of the family, support family policy at the state level and base family upbringing on the unity of both national and universal values. Such a unity determines not only the internal harmony of the family but also its relationship with society, the stability of the state and the upbringing of future generations. In modern Azerbaijani society, the protection and strengthening of the family institution is not merely a social issue but also a moral and ideological duty. As one of the key directions of state policy, the formation of the family on the basis of national and moral values and its development in harmony with universal principles is of special importance. The family, being the bearer of these values, also serves as the guarantor of the society’s moral and political stability [2; 167]. According to prominent pedagogues, sociologists and psychologists, the preservation of national and moral values in family upbringing does not simply mean maintaining traditional customs but also enriching those values with new meaning under modern conditions. In other words, the dynamic nature of national values and their interpretation in accordance with the demands of time play an important role in family life. From this perspective, promoting such values as patriotism, diligence, national pride, solidarity and social responsibility in family upbringing is of great importance [4; 112]. The integration of universal values into the family system, on the other hand, should aim at fostering empathy, mutual respect, tolerance and humanistic attitudes among children. This not only creates harmony within family relationships but also facilitates the adaptation of young people to the social environment. As a result of applying these principles in the family, individuals develop not only a strong connection to national values but also respect for universal moral principles, forming as citizens with a global mindset [5; 108]. Global experience shows that in societies where family values are weakened, social fragmentation, moral degradation and aggression among young people tend to increase. Therefore, in Azerbaijani society, the protection of the moral principles underlying the institution of the family should be considered a priority from both the perspectives of national security and social development [7; 69]. A family model based on the unity of national and universal values is not only a means of regulating intrafamilial relations but also an effective social mechanism for promoting national ideology. From this point of view, it is advisable to strengthen activities in the following directions: Актуальні питання культурології. Випуск 24/2025 113 1. Systematic promotion of national and moral values in the educational and enlightenment environment. Programs highlighting the importance of family values should be developed in schools, higher education institutions and mass media. 2. Deepening state–public cooperation in family policy. Social projects that strengthen the institution of the family should be implemented jointly with NGOs, religious communities and local self-governing bodies. 3. Promotion of gender balance and family responsibility. The social and moral development of children is more effective in families built on the equal rights of men and women. 4. The role of mass media. Television, radio and social media should serve the moral security of society through programs that promote national and moral values. 5. Integration of religious and ethical upbringing. A model of moral upbringing based on the synthesis of religion, culture and national traditions should be developed. The measures implemented in these directions will serve not only the family level but also the moral well-being of society as a whole. Ultimately, the unity of national, moral and universal values stands as the key condition ensuring the strength and stability of the family and the spiritual welfare of society. The values shaped within the family are transmitted from generation to generation, turning into the ideological foundation of the state. In today’s world, a family model that preserves its national identity while remaining open to integration with global values represents one of the core principles for the future development of Azerbaijani society. Hence, the synthesis of national, moral and universal values is a guarantee of both personal happiness and national unity as well as social stability. The moral future of society begins within the family, and every Azerbaijani family must be aware of its responsibility in preserving and sustaining these sacred values. The family, as the smallest social unit, continues to serve as the foundation of moral and civic stability within society. In the context of modern globalization, it plays a dual role — as both a transmitter of national identity and as an integrator of universal human values that are necessary for intercultural dialogue and peace. The preservation of these two dimensions ensures the continuity of moral traditions while allowing adaptation to global cultural and technological progress. In contemporary Azerbaijani society, the family remains the most effective mechanism for nurturing patriotism, respect for elders, compassion, and civic responsibility. Parents serve as the first educators, shaping the worldview and ethical orientation of their children through daily interactions and example. It is through this interpersonal environment that abstract moral concepts – such as justice, honesty, and solidarity – become lived experiences and behavioral norms [3; 105, 6; 60]. However, the rapid digitalization of everyday life and the influence of global media pose new challenges for the protection of these values. The growing presence of mass media, social networks, and virtual communication often leads to the erosion of interpersonal communication within families. As a result, traditional moral norms may lose their binding force, giving way to individualism and moral relativism. Therefore, it is crucial to develop mechanisms of moral resilience in families through joint state, educational, and community initiatives [5; 108]. The implementation of moral education programs that combine national traditions with universal ethical principles can serve as a preventive factor against the moral disorientation of youth. Such programs should emphasize cultural literacy, empathy, and responsibility for one’s community. Teachers and psychologists agree that the inclusion of family-oriented moral education modules in school curricula strengthens both intergenerational communication and social cohesion [7; 72]. Moreover, the sociological aspect of family development indicates that the moral and emotional climate within the family directly affects the level of trust, civic participation, and collective solidarity in society. Families that preserve their moral traditions are more resistant to external ideological pressures and social instability. Conversely, societies where family values are neglected tend to face increased social fragmentation and moral decay [2; 167]. The unity of national and universal values thus serves as a bridge between tradition and modernization. On one hand, national and moral values maintain cultural authenticity and collective identity; on the other, universal values ensure adaptability, dialogue, and cooperation in a multicultural world. This synthesis guarantees that the family remains both the guardian of its historical roots and an active participant in global moral evolution [4; 101]. The importance of forming such a balanced model is recognized not only in pedagogical theory but also in international practice. UNESCO and OECD emphasize that moral education should integrate local traditions with global ethical frameworks to promote peaceful coexistence and humanistic development [9; 148, 10; 102]. In this sense, Azerbaijani experience – grounded in centuries of hospitality, tolerance, and respect for elders – provides an exemplary model for harmonizing national and universal values within the modern family. Альманах наукового товариства «Афіна» кафедри культурології та музеєзнавства Рівненського державного гуманітарного університету 114 In recent years, sociologists have also noted the necessity of revitalizing moral leadership within families. Parents and elders, who historically served as moral authorities, must adapt their role to the realities of the digital age, guiding the younger generation toward critical thinking and ethical responsibility in virtual as well as real environments. The synthesis of traditional ethics with digital literacy can strengthen family communication and prevent the alienation that often arises in technology-driven societies [11; 125]. The Azerbaijani state has taken practical steps to promote family and moral values through national programs on youth education, gender equality, and cultural heritage preservation. Such policies reflect the recognition that the moral security of the nation depends not only on economic or political stability but on the ethical consciousness of its citizens, which originates in the family [1; 133, 12; 87]. The synthesis of national and universal human values within the family can be better understood through their functional, pedagogical, and sociocultural dimensions. These aspects complement one another and demonstrate how moral unity operates both at the micro-level (family) and macro-level (society). Table 1. Comparative Characteristics of National, Moral, and Universal Human Values in Family Development Value Dimension Core Content Function in Family Expected Social Outcome National Values Language, culture, traditions, respect for ancestors, patriotism Strengthens family identity and loyalty to the homeland Preservation of cultural heritage, patriotism, civic duty Moral Values Honesty, justice, compassion, diligence, responsibility Regulates interpersonal relations within the family Formation of ethical behavior and moral resilience Universal Values Human rights, tolerance, equality, solidarity Facilitates intercultural communication and empathy Peaceful coexistence and integration into global society Source: Summarized by the author based on [3; 115, 4; 101, 9; 148, 10; 102]. This table demonstrates that national and universal values do not contradict each other; rather, they complement one another. National and moral principles ensure continuity and internal stability, while universal values provide openness, adaptability, and global interaction. In this synthesis, the family becomes a miniature model of harmonious social order – rooted in tradition yet responsive to change. Furthermore, a review of contemporary research reveals that societies capable of balancing national and global ethical orientations achieve higher levels of social trust, cohesion, and resilience. This interrelation between value systems and social outcomes can be conceptualized through the following model. Table 2. Correlation Between Family Value Priorities and Societal Stability Indicators Family Value Priority Moral-Educational Orientation Impact on Youth Development Societal Reflection High emphasis on national & moral traditions Education in patriotism, respect for elders, honesty Formation of loyal, disciplined, and socially responsible citizens Strong collective identity and intergenerational continuity Balanced integration of national and universal values Tolerance, equality, critical thinking, civic empathy Creative, open-minded, globally competent individuals Stable, inclusive, and democratic society Weak moral orientation or loss of traditional values Consumerism, individualism, lack of empathy Alienation, moral relativism, social disengagement Decline in social trust and moral fragmentation Source: Compiled by the author based on [2; 167, 5; 108, 7; 72, 11; 125]. The results reveal that family systems emphasizing the balance between traditional ethics and universal humanistic ideals demonstrate the highest moral adaptability. When family upbringing neglects these foundations, both moral integrity and national identity weaken. Thus, the moral culture of society directly depends on the quality of ethical education within families. In conclusion of this analytical section, it can be stated that the unity of national, moral, and universal human values represents a multidimensional phenomenon encompassing ethical, pedagogical, and sociological elements. The establishment of a coherent moral framework in the family context ensures not only the preservation of cultural identity but also the moral sustainability of the nation in the era of globalization. The results of the conducted analytical study reveal that the unity of national, moral, and universal human values is not a static ideological construct but a dynamic socio-cultural system that evolves together with the development of society. This synthesis serves as a stabilizing factor that ensures harmony between tradition and modernization within the family structure. Актуальні питання культурології. Випуск 24/2025 115 The comparative analysis presented in Tables 1 and 2 confirms that families prioritizing both national and universal value orientations achieve higher levels of internal cohesion, empathy, and civic responsibility. Conversely, where traditional moral frameworks weaken, tendencies toward alienation, materialism, and social indifference become evident. These findings are consistent with international studies emphasizing that family systems grounded in cultural continuity and ethical pluralism demonstrate greater resilience to global socio-economic challenges [9; 11]. A clear correlation was observed between value balance in family upbringing and indicators of youth behavior. Families that integrate national ethics with universal principles such as tolerance, humanism, and equality foster young individuals with stable moral orientation and strong civic identity [5; 7]. This balance prevents moral relativism and strengthens intergenerational solidarity. The data also demonstrate that national values function as the spiritual core of identity, while universal values provide adaptive capacity in an interconnected world. Their convergence produces a holistic model of social ethics where moral integrity coexists with openness to diversity. In this respect, Azerbaijani family culture – characterized by hospitality, mutual respect, and collectivism – embodies a living example of harmony between rootedness and modernity [3; 4]. Furthermore, the study shows that mass media and digital communication play a decisive role in transmitting or distorting these values. Families actively engaging in moral dialogue and digital literacy programs manage to protect their ethical boundaries while encouraging critical awareness among youth [2; 11]. This indicates that moral education should encompass both traditional and digital environments. Another significant finding concerns gender balance and equal participation within the family. The moral education of children is notably more effective in households where relationships between men and women are based on partnership, mutual respect, and shared responsibility [10; 12]. Such families foster inclusive attitudes that reflect both national ideals of justice and universal human rights principles. In general, the obtained results substantiate that the strength of family moral systems determines the moral health of the entire society. The family serves as the first school of citizenship, empathy, and solidarity, transforming moral theory into lived ethical practice. Therefore, policies aimed at reinforcing family institutions, supporting moral education, and integrating global ethical norms into local culture are vital for sustainable social development. Conclusion. The study confirms that the unity of national, moral, and universal human values is the main foundation of a modern, ethically mature, and socially stable family. The family, as a moral microcosm of society, not only preserves national traditions and moral consciousness but also integrates universal values that enable adaptation to global cultural processes. In the Azerbaijani context, the synthesis of these value systems promotes social harmony, intergenerational solidarity, and civic responsibility. National values provide continuity and cultural rootedness; moral values regulate interpersonal relationships within the family; universal human values ensure openness, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence. The findings demonstrate that societies capable of maintaining this balance achieve higher levels of social trust and resilience. Hence, strengthening the moral culture of the family should be considered a key dimension of state social policy and educational strategy. Moral education in the family must integrate the principles of national ethics with universal human rights and humanitarian ideals. Ultimately, the family that preserves its national identity while embracing universal moral norms contributes not only to personal development but also to the sustainable moral progress of society as a whole. The harmony between national, moral, and universal human values thus represents both a moral necessity and a strategic condition for the long-term development of humanity. References 1. Family–school collaboration plays a crucial role in the socialization of primary school students. Socialization is the process through which a child develops as a member of society, internalizing behavioral norms, values, and social roles.
