The present study contributes to the further development of traditional perspectives on socialisation by incorporating the constructivist approach of communicative figurations and taking various social actors into account (e.g. family, peers and school). Within the conceptual framework of the communicative figurations approach, actors are regarded as socially constructed “social domains”, with media occupying an increasingly prominent role in various aspects of communication, entertainment, and information. The theoretical framework necessitates a dual qualitative and longitudinal approach. The qualitative panel study utilised two cohorts to reconstruct evolving media repertoires and communicative practices. The focus of this research is on significant life transitions, developmental tasks, and negotiation processes with other social actors and domains. The study comprises two funding phases (2018-2021 and 2021-2025). Of the original 32 families, all four survey waves could be realised with a total of 26 families from the greater regions of Hamburg and Nuremberg. The inclusion of two distinct cohorts, with the children either commencing their schooling or transitioning from primary to secondary education at the time of the initial survey, enabled the consideration of the impact of institutional transitions on media practices. To understand the role of the media repertoire and the significance of media in different social relationships, age-appropriate survey instruments were developed (semistandardised guided interviews, visualisation of the "media-actor relationship", media diaries). To obtain a comprehensive picture of the interactive socialisation process, both the perspectives of the children and those of the parents interviewed were included. The study provided results on media-related negotiation processes between adolescents and the social domains of family, peers and school. These results can be understood in terms of the dimensions of autonomy and heteronomy, proximity and distance, as well as belonging and distinction. Furthermore, it was possible to trace how the processing of developmental tasks with and via media is changing. Digital communication with peers is significant. It becomes evident that the media socialisation of children and young people is not solely influenced by media ensembles and the associated attitudes and values, but also by, on a macro level, the evolving media environment. 4 3 Progress Report The qualitative longitudinal study “Connected Kids: Socialisation in a changing media environment (ConKids)” is a cooperation between the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) and the Leibniz Institute for Media Research | Hans-BredowInstitut (HBI). The project began in 2018 and has continued since November 2021 due to renewed funding from the DFG. From the outset, the project was closely linked to the research network “Communicative Figurations” (https://www.komfi.uni-bremen.de/), which also significantly shaped its theoretical perspective and the reference to the communicative figuration approach (Kammerl et al., 2020). Against this background, the ConKids project aimed to investigate the socialisation of children and young people in a deeply mediatised media society as part of a longitudinal study. Traditional socialisation agents, such as families, peer groups and schools, are regarded as communicative figurations on which adolescents actively exert influence. Within these figurations, media play an important role as both communication channels and subject areas or thematic fields. The project aimed to examine the individual media practices of children and adolescents, their media repertoires, and the media-related negotiation processes between them and their social domains. In this context, the focus was particularly on the role of media in negotiation processes, in relation to autonomy and heteronomy, proximity and distance, as well as belonging and distinction, and their changes over time. In the course of mediatisation, the relationships of children and adolescents with other people and their social contexts are changing. Media developments and the increasing use of media in families, peer groups, schools and other social domains have an impact on the actor constellations and communicative practices within these social contexts, contributing to their blurring boundaries. In the first funding phase, we focused on the special role of the family (Dertinger et al. 2021; Kammerl et al., 2022; Müller et al., 2023; Potzel 2023; Potzel & Dertinger, 2022). In the second funding phase, the focus was on expanding and transforming social relationships via media, particularly the roles of peers and school (Lampert et al., in press; Potzel, 2024). One trend emerging from our findings is that processes of socialisation are shifting. In the context of the pluralisation and diversification of media-related communication, peers are becoming increasingly relevant with age. They are more present via digital communication and lead to a stronger confrontation with reciprocal behavioural expectations. The accessibility of digital media is increasing, and free spaces are being filled with digital practices. This further alters the developmental tasks of children and adolescents, for example, in shaping relationships within the peer group or meeting the requirements for media-related skills. There is a tendency towards premature exposure, as children and adolescents begin using media aimed at older adolescents and adults at an early age. By using digital services, they enter into transactional relationships with providers, e.g. of social media and games, at an early age, becoming part of a global economic and power structure. Overall, processes of social integration in this sense appear to be increasing. Several activities were conducted to improve the validity of our research findings. The children's statements were triangulated with those of their parents, and statements from different time points were checked for inconsistencies. To ensure the validity of the qualitative 5 analysis of our data, several individuals were assessed for the coding process, and their consistency was checked through the calculation of intercoder reliability. According to the DFG checklist and the data management plan dated September 2020, all data are stored in a data repository at FAU. All instruments were documented and made available in the publications or on the project website. The interviews were not made available for post-project use due to concerns about research ethics and economics. Our data sharing agreement stipulates that the data may only be used by project participants (e.g. for further publications and presentations after the project). Several efforts were made around science communication and dissemination. We provided information about current developments and made practical materials available via our website. As a science communication measure, project topics were presented digitally at the “KinderUni” at FAU and the Nuremberg Digital Festival in a manner appropriate for the dialogue groups. In addition to the presentations at conferences, we invited the scientific audience to a lunch talk at the HBI (06/2025), and we conducted a workshop for early-career scientists at FAU in December 2023. 4 Published Project Results 4.1 Category A – Articles in peer-reviewed journals, contributions to peer-reviewed conferences or to anthology volumes, and book publications The list provides an overview of publications from the second funding phase (2021-2025).
