Sánchez-Polack Morate, Carlos Vicente; Granero Martín, Francisco

Abstract

Using an architect’s perspective in this work, we will focus on using both technical and mathematical criteria to resolve the interpretation difficulties posed by Vitruvius’ prescriptions in his treatise regarding the design of the Ionic entablature. Blánquez 1 references the difficulty of interpreting the treatise before carrying out his own translation of it: Even if you find the clearest path in any of the translations that have been done so far, which mostly have not been done by architects, you will still always come across obstacles... 1. PALABRAS CLAVE: VITRUVIO, ORDEN JÓNICO, ARQUITECTURA CLÁSICA, ARQUEOLOGÍA, ENTABLAMENTO, ARQUITRABE, TRATADO The Treatise of Vitruvius, also known as The Ten Books On Architecture, has the privilege of being the only book from its time that has been passed on until today, and hence is the reference in order to understand the principles of the ancient architecture. It has been studied from both the historian and the translator-philologist points of view, and also by the Renaissance architects as a confrontation with the Roman architecture, or its ruins, that they were observing. However, we understand that it is necessary to analyze it with a new vision, coming from the point of view of the contemporaneous architect, focusing on its arithmetic, geometric, compositional and technical aspects. The article gathers a way of approaching a new research on Vitruvio by reviewing the text, but without explicitly assuming the conclusions that were obtained by the Renaissance architects. Focusing on the Ionic Entablature, we have deciphered the connections and proportions of every one of its components, analyzing and refuting, when necessary, some prescriptions included in Vitruvius’ theory, as well as certain interpretations that the different consulted translators have made, two different sides with inconceivable disagreements amongst them. The goal we want to achieve is to reach, throughout a very thorough research, a quantifiable rule that we will summarize in tables, providing, in an innovative way, coherent connections between the heights of the column and the entablature. III, lám. VIII In relation to the multiple translations of the treatise, we also find it notable to highlight the following reference made by Scholfield 2 in regard to Newton’s opinion 3: ...all Vitruvius commentators see his explanation of architecture as very obscure and unintelligible and all differ in their interpretation...The words are organized in such a way that they have no coherence or meaning.” He continues, “...Newton does not put the blame on Vitruvius, but rather on the fact that the meaning of his words has been lost... the manuscript must have been altered in the period between the date it was written and the date of the first handwritten copy... our knowledge of Vitruvius is based fundamentally on the interpretation of his work from a Renaissance context. Vitruvius’ text must have been severed by the use of archaic Latin and Greek construction terms, as well as by the lack of architectural knowledge by the scribes. However, this would lead us to believe that perhaps the inclusion of graphics could have clarified the procedures prescribed by Vitruvius. The author himself refers to these procedures in reference to the design of the Ionic capital. It is difficult to find, for example, two authors who coincide in their drawings of the Ionic Vitruvian capital with regard to the position of the astragal torus in relation to the eye of the volute. A simple drawing by Vitruvius could have helped to solve this question in a very simple way. This is not contrary to saying that other debates, such as those that currently exist regarding the Dispositio, and specifically the Scaenographia, are still valid and topical. However, we should consider to what extent this debate is fueled by the unknowns that appear as a result of the exclusive written definition of these graphic elements. Analysis of the problems regarding the height of the Epystilium The norms established in the Vitruvian method were not entirely rigid in all aspects. However, they were rigid regarding the fundamental aspect which defined the geometry in the floor plan of the building: the main symmetry. The symmetry in the floor plan is based on predefined geometry with initial proportions needing to be modified in order to adapt the geometry to the metric la geometría en planta del edificio, la Simetría principal. This is done in accordance with exact measurements which are very easy to translate into the constructive practice. According to Professor Taylor 4: It is impossible to design a circular building with both diameter and circumference in round numbers of feet, for example.Usually one of the two core generative processes – geometry and arithmetic – will yield to the other. As such, it is worth referring to Mark W. Jones’ method 5, which decodes the symmetry of the Verona amphitheater and its arithmetic adjustment. Once the geometry of the building has been adjusted according to its symmetry and to the nature of the site, the symmetry of the other parts will respond to the whole. The facade initially dimensioned in the floor plan is shaped according to the orders (ordering) chosen, for which Vitruvius established rigid prescriptions based on proportions according to the column heights. These proportions certainly do not coincide with those used by other Roman architects of the time. In Book III, Vitruvius describes the characteristics of the Ionic order and its entablature. He states that the width of the epystilium in its support on the capitals coincides with the top diameter of the column shaft. In its upper part, immediately next to the frieze, the width is equal to that of the bottom part of the shaft, also called module “M” of the order. These dimensions in section and their height being between 12 and 15 feet are the only modular proportions that are established for the Ionicepystilium in the treatise. The inconsistency in the method is seen through the initial ambiguity of the height of the column in modules, which is later specified in Book IV, and which seems not to be intended for use for the calculation of the height of theepystilium. As a result of this, doubts had arisen from the outset. In figure 1, we outline the work of Thomas G. Smith 6 on the Ionic order. Smith depicts the Vitruvian proportions through his drawings. Figures 2 and 3 show the elevations of the Ionic order in the Theatre of Marcellus (13 B.C.); a construction that was contemporary with the publication of the treatise (c. 28 B.C.). Entablature and Ionic order of the Theatre of Marcellus. Frêart de Chambray 1650. The different denominations of the elements have been superimposed of more than 150 years between the two prints: one byG. B. Cipriani 7, 1803 and the other by R. Fréart de Chambray 8, 1650. On this print, we rename parts of the order, for better understanding. In Book III, Vitruvius establishes different criteria for the calculation of the height of theepystilium, depending on the height of the column. Oliver’s translation states 9: ...Here is the arrangement of the epystilium: if the column is between 12 and 15 feet high, the height of the epystiliumshould be half the width of the bottom of the shaft. If its height is between 15 and 20 feet, divide the height of the column into 13 parts and give the epystiliumone of these parts. If it is 20 to 25 feet, divide the height of the column into 12.5 parts, and the epystiliumshall have the height of 1 part. If it is 25 to 30 feet, divide the height into 12 parts, and theepystilium shall have 1 of these 12 parts. This is how the different heights of the epystilium should be in proportion to the height of the columns. The translators of the treatise consider these same proportions, except for Blánquez (1970, p.81) who disagrees. He states that the epystiliumshould be ½M+ 1/6M, instead of just ½M for column heights between 12 and 15 feet. The inconsistencies in the Vitruvian method open an important area for discussion for four main reasons: • For the heights of 12 to 15 feet, the column’s height in modules is not specified and as such the dimensions of the bottom of the shaft 10 remain undetermined, being that the data for half a module is unknown. • For the heights of 15, 20, and 25 feet, there is a duplicity in the norms with the epystiliumhaving different heights depending on the height being applied to the proportion fixed for a particular height range, or for the following range. • For heights of 15 and 30 feet, Vitruvius considers divisions by 13, by 12½, and by 12. The latter seems to us to be the only logical possibility as 12 is the number of inches in a foot (or 3⁄4 of a foot in fingers). With 12, it is possible to obtain geometrically applicable data. The other divisors give figures that are fractions of prime numbers which are impossible, or very difficult, to implement for most heights. considera divisiones por 13, por 12½ y por 12. For columns higher than 30 feet, Vitruvius does not define the proportions for calculating the height of the epystilium. For heights of 12 and 15 feet, if Vitruvius followed the rule of Hermogenes for a temple of Ionic order, the height of the column would be 8½M (9M according to some authors). However, by dividing the height of the column by 8½, the results would be: 1 7/17, 1 9/17, 1 11/17 and 1 13/17, respectively. That is, fractions of a prime number which are complex figures to put into practice. In terms of this ambiguity in the treatise, Ortiz y Sanz 11 estimated that Vitruvius should have considered a 7M divisor. This is an inappropriate modulation of the Ionic order, according to the statements in Book IV.C1., because in the Doric order, defined in Book IV.C3, the height of the column is 7M and the dimension of the epystiliumis a constant proportion equal to ½M. Regarding heights between 15 and 30 feet, we have calculated the height of the epystilium for all the heights of the column in accordance with the Vitruvian rules. Due to the difficulty of putting the fractions of prime numbers into practice, the results 12 have been adjusted following the symmetry adjustment criterion detailed in Book VI.C1. According to Oliver (1997, pp.148-149): ...The first thing we must establish is the rules of symmetry from which the various alternatives or modifications are derived with complete accuracy; then, the longitudinal measurement of the site of the future building will be determined and its dimensions will be fixed at the same time. Then, the exact adjustment of the proportion will be established. When applying a division, or applying the division of the following column height, there is a small difference in the height of the epystiliumin relation to the column. In the case that the column is 15 feet, the epystiliumwould have a height of 12⁄13 feet. For a column that is 25 feet, theepystilium would be 2 feet. That is, between these two extremes the difference is only 11/13 feet, equivalent to about 10 inches. As such, between 15 and 25 feet the difference is 10 inches, resulting in an increase in the height of the epystiliumof only 1 inch for every foot of the column’s height. Dimensions of epistylium according the corrected rule of Vitruvius * These figures have been obtained from the arithmetic sequence resulting from the reverse. The result is, as Ortiz and Sanz said, for a Module 1/7 the height of the column. This is not logical since you have to note that Vitruvius considers the same entablature for Ionian / Corinthian, but different for Doric, being 1/7 its modulation Table 2. Summary: Ratio between the height of the epystilium and the eight of the column The results obtained are summarized in table 1 and show the heights of the epystiliumafter having been adjusted for the columns with heights between 15 and 30 feet and deduced for the other heights. For the column heights between 12 and 15 feet 13, after havinganalyzedthe treatisein depth, we have come to the conclusion that the height of column considered is in fact 8M. As such, we are presented with an arithmetic proportionality that corresponds to an arithmetic progression between 14 and 12 feet that decreases successively by one inch. From 30 to 60 feet, the height of the epystilium would be 1/12 of the height of the column, which is justified below. In summary, we conclude that the height of theepystilium, in inches, is related to the height of the column in feet. This is shown in table 2. The height of the Epystiliumfor columns over 30 feet according to the different translations Vitruvius also does not establish a rule of proportion for column heights above 30 feet. As such, it is necessary to analyze the content of the various translations of Book III: Velasco 14: “...Perrault 15: Unlike the other translators, Perrault does not set the height range between 25 and 30 feet. Also, he considers that the height between 15 and 20 feet should be divided by 15. Ortiz y Sanz 16: Morgan 17 (translated) Blánquez 18: Andreu 19: Oliver 20: Ortiz y Sanz (1797, p.77) considered that Vitruvius estimated that the proportion should continue to increase every 5 feet following the criteria for the previous measurements: 1/11½, 1/11, 1/10½, etc. With this, however, inconsistent results of up to ¼ for the column height are achieved. He considered that the inconsistencies in these results originate from the fact that the method used by Vitruvius is a reworking of several authors. Vitruvius would have been unaware of the possible errors resulting as a consequence of its application. The research carried out leads us to consider that the proportion to be maintained with heights of 30 feet and above is the same as between 25 and 30 feet, that is, 1/12, since it does not contradict any of the translations Desde los 30 hasta los 60 pies, la altura del arquitrabe sería 1/12 de la altura de la columna, lo que se justifica seguidamente. 50 Tabla 3. Dimensions of the parts of the entablature, according to Vitruvius Table 4. Measurement of the entablature relative to the epystilium and makes the epystiliumincrease proportionally as the height of the column increases. In addition, the figure for 25 feet is the limit established for the design of the Ionic capital according to some translations. The results obtained are exact figures in inches. We believe that if Vitruvius had understood something else in regard to these heights, he would have clearly outlined it, as he did for the reduction in regard to the height of the topof the shaft. Obtaining the heights of the frieze and the cornice Once the height of the epystilium has been defined in inches, the dimensions of the other elements of the entablature are proportional to it. The height of the frieze has two modalities: One, for a smooth front, whose height is ¾ of the height of theepystilium. The other, for a front with figures, whose height is 5⁄4 of the height of theepystilium. Furthermore, only Blánquez (1957, p. 82) considered the height of the frieze to be +/- 1/7 of that of theepystilium, instead of +/- ¼ as stated by the other translators. In all translations, the central fascia of the epystiliumis the reference for sizing the cornice. This is as a result of dividing theepystilium, without its cymatium, into 12 parts and taking the proportions 3/4/5, in ascending order, for the three fascias. The division by 12 of theepystilium confirms that the operation is based on measurement in inches, one-twelfth of the foot. This central fascia is equivalent to 4/12, or one third, of the epystiliumwithout a cymatium. The cornice is composed of a dentil and a corona, which are elements of the same dimensions, in terms of their height and projection, as the central fascia of the epystilium. Both are crowned with a cymatium. The width of the dentils is 1/2 of their height and the space between them is 2/3 of their width. The ogee 21 is placed on the corona’s cymatium on both slopes of the tympanum and on the entablatures of the side porticos. From the Renaissance to the Neoclassical period, treatise writers considered the ogee as part of the entablature and thus illustrated it in their prints.
