xii Furthermore, it is possible to distinguish between external and internal characterisation; direct and indirect characterisation; and implicit and explicit characterisation. Direct characterisation comes straight from the character under consideration. In turn, it can be implicit whenever it is achieved by means of language or costume, to wit, by means other than the explicit character description. As a result of this enquiry, the research is focused on internal, direct and implicit characterisation. It is also relevant to consider characterisation by contrast, the importance of the first impression of characters and their evolution throughout a play. On the other hand, the degree of individualisation is measured employing deviant case analysis. This means that, once the patterns of interaction are established, the deviant cases that do not follow the expected trend can potentially be interpreted as individualised instances against the corresponding types. The second part of the chapter addresses the difficulties concerning Heraclidae . These are basically related to the ‘mutilation theory’ by which the tragedy is thought to have undergone later mutilations and rewriting. This idea has been constantly reviewed. Thus, many hypotheses of how and where the missing parts are to be located, as well as how the fragments and the rewriting fit into the scheme, have been put forward. But it seems hard to accept these ideas, insofar as none of the reasons in favour of the mutilation theory and the interpolated lines are based on linguistic or metric grounds. Be that as it may, Heraclidae has a number of features that makes it an apposite starting point for a study on linguistic characterisation. For instance, it is the only tragedy that lacks a central character. This is already evident in the title of the play, namely a collective name that does not correspond to the chorus. As a result, the role played by each character is more evenly distributed. Chapter 2 addresses the method, whose aim is to establish guidelines for approaching linguistic characterisation in a dramatic corpus. The potentially relevant features for the study of linguistic characterisation have been selected under the framework of Speech Act Theory, Conversation Analysis, and especially, Politeness Theory, thus forming the baselines of a threefold approach. Politeness Theory is of special importance because of the role played by sociodemographic attributes, such as age, gender and status, which in turn help to outline character types according to which the distribution of a number of linguistic features can be analysed. Forms of address, as well as downgraders and upgraders,
xiii broadly understood as polite and impolite strategies, respectively, are among the features studied according to their distribution per character. The downgraders include various types of hedges, expressions of pessimism and of deference, and different strategies for apologising and for impersonalising. The upgraders consist of overstaters, intensifiers, pluscommitters, lexical intensifiers, aggressive interrogatives and personalisation. Stasima are left out since they seem to correspond to conventions that are linguistically, structurally and metrically different from the interaction strategies of individual characters. Accordingly, the proposed method does not seem to offer an appropriate account of the odes performed by the chorus. Just as many are the features analysed and the characters involved, so too are the intersections between the strategies and the characters. In order to overcome this difficulty, the tests in Chapters 3 and 5 were coded using a qualitative data analysis (QDA) software. The software provided an accurate tally of words and automatically generated results relating to the distribution of the proposed features among the characters. Chapter 3 examines the socio-pragmatic factors pertaining to the use of forms of address with a focus on the forms of address at the right periphery, namely, at the end of the clause. Marked cases are likelier to be at the right periphery, given that forms of address are seldom employed in this position for establishing contact, selecting the next addressee in trilogues or allocating the next turn. Consequently, forms of address at the right periphery may shed light on the linguistic characterisation of the characters employing them. Together with social factors (especially age and status), forms of address at the left and right periphery are comparatively analysed according to their distribution per type and per speech act type, including whether these speech acts are performed directly and explicitly without redressive action (bald on record). All this may provide further insights into the first appearance of Alcmena and the evolution of her character. The last two chapters are about two speech acts, namely approval and supplication, which can be revealing as to the linguistic characterisation of the characters involved. The departure point of Chapter 4 is the formula καλῶς ἔλεξας, which can be literally translated as ‘you spoke beautifully’, ‘you spoke well’ and which is uttered
xiv by Iolaus to the servant in Ε. Heracl .724-726. The chapter examines how this type of formula works beyond its propositional meaning. The distribution of καλῶς ἔλεξας and variants is examined in terms of the position of the formulae on the sequence organization of turns at talk. Likewise, the formula καλῶς ἔλεξας and variants are analysed with regard to two key factors in Politeness Theory, namely Power and Distance, i.e. the difference in the status and the degree of familiarity between participants, respectively. The formula καλῶς ἔλεξας appears mostly in the second part of an adjacency pair or at third position, viz. as a post-expansion to an adjacency pair. In addition, καλῶς ἔλεξας is mostly uttered by characters with greater power to ones with less power in the interaction. As a result of this research, it is possible to explore the difference between agreement and approval and the formulae associated with these two different speech acts. Since approval is expected to be uttered by characters with greater power in the interaction, the formulae associated with it can work as taxemic markers, that is, markers of non-symmetric interactions between participants of a different status. All in all, approval formulae can linguistically characterise the way in which the characters play their role. Chapter 5 offers an analysis of how (im)politeness strategies work with regard to linguistic characterisation in Greek tragedy. The analysed strategies are mainly the downgraders and upgraders discussed in Chapter 2. The aim is necessarily twopronged, namely, to pin down the linguistic realisations of each strategy and its distribution by character type. The corpus includes a selection of suppliant scenes (E. Heracl .55-287; Supp .110-597; Andr .515-746; Hec .218-443, 726-863 and E. Or .380-724). These scenes, such as the one found in Heraclidae, provide interactions in comparable contexts, since they follow a story pattern and present a recurring cast of characters consisting minimally of a suppliant and a supplicandus , to which a third character can be added as an opponent of the suppliant (e.g. the Heralds in E. Heracl . and E. Supp .). Finally, a word on the bibliography. There is a vast amount of literature on Euripides and the linguistic aspects addressed in this thesis. Therefore, the goal here is not to compile every available paper on the issue at hand but to be appropriately selective. Although this may seem subjective to a certain extent and frustrating for readers unable to find references that they believe to be relevant, this has been beyond

CONCLUDING REMARKS Many descriptions of the characters under study were already made intuitively. The aim here has been to determine whether they are represented linguistically. In this regard, one of the main goals reached is perhaps the implementation of a method for the systematic study of linguistic characterisation beyond intuitions and impressions. Accordingly, the characterisation of some of the Euripidean characters has been as it were dissected into specific linguistic features. These features mostly relate to strategies under the framework of Politeness Theory, and more broadly, to Speech Act Theory. The main questions posed here concern the distribution patterns of these traits per character type, how they work, how they are in turn clustered and how they contribute to the role played by the characters. The findings of this research are consequently twofold. From a purely linguistic standpoint, we have been able to specify some of the (im)politeness strategies from the typologies proposed by Brown & Levinson and House & Kasper that can be considered as such in Classical Greek and how they actually work. On the other hand, approval as a different type of speech act from agreement has been linked to specific formulae, which in turn also play a role in dispreferred second pair parts. Lastly, we have also examined the way in which forms of address at the right periphery in Greek tragedy can modalise the host clause to the point, for example, of making a complaint or reproach out of a statement. From the standpoint of linguistic characterisation, the main finding is that the (im)politeness strategies, approval formulae and forms of address at the right periphery are not randomly distributed among the characters. For instance, accepted suppliants do not address upgraders to the supplicandi . On the contrary, rejected suppliants are, as it were, ineffectual, as they address upgraders to the supplicandi even though they are in a disadvantaged position and in need of requesting. In turn, the supplicandi barely address downgraders to the suppliants, unless they reject them. As a result, there is a linguistic characterisation by contrast between the participants. In sum, this thesis has offered an account of the mechanisms by which the impressions about a character are linguistically prompted. For instance, we are of the
530 mind that the characters involved in the supplication scene in Suppliants are more complex than their counterparts in Heraclidae . This impression is given by the fact that the characters in Heraclidae present the trait clusters expected of their roles, whereas the characters in Suppliants do not follow the distribution patterns according to their role as strictly as in Heraclidae : the Herald is not as hostile as Copreus; Theseus is not as diplomatic as Demophon; and Adrastus does not supplicate as efficiently as Iolaus. This is linguistically achieved by the distribution of (im)polite strategies. Thus, hostile characters, such as Copreus, have proportionately more upgraders and avoid downgraders; accepted suppliants, such as Iolaus, only employ downgraders. Diplomatic characters, like Demophon, have the highest status in the interaction, but neither do they utter proportionally as many upgraders nor avoid downgraders in their speech. Furthermore, in cases in which there are contrary interpretations of a character, as with Hecuba in the homonymous play, it is possible to confirm which of them is better supported by linguistic traits. The study methodology has likewise allowed to realise that linguistic characterisation in Euripides neither involves a single prominent feature nor traits that are exclusively ascribed to a character or a type of character. Linguistic characterisation rather consists of a combination of features proportionately more frequent in the speech of a character in a particular interaction. This idea was advanced by Silk (1995: 2, 166-167) with regard to the linguistic characterisation of elders in Greek literature and has been confirmed in this research on a wider scale. As previously noted, there are characters in Euripidean tragedy that are types and other characters that are more individualised. Types follow the distribution patterns expected of their role in relation to the other characters in the interaction. In turn, individualisation can be measured by the degree in which a character deviates from the expected patterns of interaction. Deviant cases are not predictable and thus produce individualised characters. For instance, the Phrygian in Orestes insists on uttering approval formulae despite being a foreign low-status character. This can be considered a salient feature characterising the Phrygian as a barbarian, since the character is unable to pin down the nuance of the approval formulae in Greek. There is also characterisation by contrast in Euripides, for instance, between the rejected suppliants and the refusing supplicandi , as well as between suppliants and ἐχθροί. Inter alia, Copreus as a hostile character is linguistically presented by clusters of upgraders and the absence of downgraders in his speech. In contrast,
531 Iolaus is portrayed as a successful suppliant, as he avoids upgraders in his speech and uses most types of downgraders. Characterisation by age seems of particular importance in Euripidean tragedy. It can alter the expected distribution of linguistic traits by virtue of other attributes, such as genre or status. Examples of these include Aethra, a female character but also an old mother, as well as the tutors and nurses whose low status is neutralised by their age and their intimacy with their masters. On the other hand, both old and young characters often share linguistic traits, for instance, the higher proportion of terms of address at the right periphery. This in turn appears to be linked to a tendency to portray impetuous characters either as old or young, for example, Peleus in Andromache and Theseus in Suppliants , respectively. In the main, the traits that contribute to the linguistic characterisation of Euripidean characters operate beyond Heraclidae and a specific timeframe, as confirmed by the incorporation of later tragedies, such as Orestes , in the case studies. Linguistic characterisation, at least in Euripides, is not primarily performed by features at the level of morphology or sentence grammar. The relevant traits for linguistic characterisation work at supra-sentential levels of interaction between participants. Perhaps that is the reason why linguistic characterisation has been hitherto barely traceable. Linguistic characterisation in the context of pragmatics is not only a way of supporting individual interpretations in literary texts, but may even have implications for certain aspects of the philological method. Thus, there is a tendency to establish parallels exclusively on the strength of lexical similarity in ad-locum commentaries. If functions beyond the morphological and sentence levels are taken into consideration, many of these parallels are questionable. Thus, loci similes should not be accounted for by focusing solely on the degree of similarity between words, but also on what these allegedly same words do in a given context. Since the nineteenth century, conjectures became increasingly more frequent in textual criticism. The modus operandi that is mostly found in textual criticism of dramatic texts involves considering any apparently unnecessary line as spurious, as it is deemed to be either an actor’s interpolation or an explanatory gloss by the copist. However, a pragmatic standpoint may cast light on many apparently expletive expressions, many of which may have a characterising function.
