Abstract

Our journal, “proyecto, progreso, arquitectura”, founded in 2010, is an initiative of the Research Group HUM–632 of the University of Seville and its objective is the sharing and debating of research within architecture. This six–monthly scientific publication, in paper and digital format, publishes original works that have not been previously published in other journals. The article selection process consists of a double blind system involving two external reviewers, following the usual protocols for serial scientific publications. The titles, summaries, key words and full text of articles are also published in English. “proyecto, progreso, arquitectura” presents a clear, easy and flexible structure. It deals with all the subjects relating to the theory and the practise of the architectural project. The different “open themes” that compose our editorial line are sources for the conjunction of diverse investigations. The journal is directed toward architects, students, researchers and professionals related to the planning and the accomplishment of the architectural work. EXTERNAL ANONYMOUS PEER REVIEW. When the Editorial Board of the magazine has verified that the article fulfils the standards relating to style and content indicated in the instructions for authors, the article will be sent to two anonymous experts, within the specific field of architectural investigation and critique, for a double blind review. The Director of the magazine will communicate the result of the reviewers’ evaluations, and their recommendations, to the authors by electronic mail, to the address used to send the article. The Director will communicate the result of the review (publication without changes; publication with minor corrections; publication with significant corrections; its publication is not advisable), as well as the observations and comments of the reviewers, to the main author,. If the manuscript has been accepted with modifications, the authors will have to resubmit a new version of the article, addressing the requirements and suggestions of the external reviewers. If they wish, the authors can also send a letter to the Editorial Board, in which they will indicate the content of the modifications of the article. The articles with significant corrections can be sent to Advisory and/or Scientific Board for verification of the validity of the modifications made by the author. The Editorial Board will publish corrections, clarifications, retractions and apologies when necessary. In compliance with these best practices, PPA has published the arbitration system that is followed for the selection of articles as well as the evaluation criteria to be applied by the anonymous, external peer–reviewers. PPA keeps these criteria current, based solely on the scientific importance, the originality, clarity and relevance of the presented article. Our journal guarantees the confidentiality of the evaluation process at all times: the anonymity of the reviewers and authors; the reviewed content; the reasoned report issued by the reviewers and any other communication issued by the editorial, advisory and scientific boards as required. Equally, the strictest confidentiality applies to possible clarifications, claims or complaints that an author may wish to refer to the journal’s committees or the article reviewers. PROYECTO, PROGRESO ARQUITECTURA (PPA) declares its commitment to the respect and integrity of work already published. For this reason, plagiarism is strictly prohibited and texts that are identified as being plagiarized, or having fraudulent content, will be eliminated or not published in PPA. The journal will act as quickly as possible in such cases. In accepting the terms and conditions expressed by our journal, authors must guarantee that the article and the materials associated with it are original and do not infringe copyright. PALABRAS CLAVE SIG; arquitectura del paisaje; análisis geoespacial; proyecto informado; geodesign SUMMARY In the last few decades, work with geographic information systems in landscape design has been oriented towards an extension of the architect’s usual field of analysis. The use of geospatial technologies has brought about an advanced reading of the landscape, which allows to detect previously invisible patterns, resources and meanings. Emerging lines of research, however, present more ambitious aspirations for this technology in a context of intense fluctuations caused by globalisation and climate emergencies. This text reflects on the conditions that favoured the use of geographic information systems in architectural design and planning, on the contemporary understanding of landscape and how its ideas can be transferred to the design process and upon the renewed relationship that this design logic suggests with respect to geographic information systems. In a new framework for action based on the notion of landscape as an integrating reality, a tangible expression of the interaction between society and the environment it inhabits, the use of these systems advances along the line of becoming a reference tool to generate the cross-cutting elements necessary for the holistic reading required by the landscape from a contemporary formulation. WALLISS, Jillian; RAHMANN, Heike. Landscape Architecture and Digital Technologies. Londres: Routledge, 2016, p. xvii. 2. MCHARG, Ian L. Design with nature. Nueva York: New York Natural History Press, 1969. 4. BERTAZZON, Stefania; LANDO, Fabio. 4 5 4. A similar approach to integrated design can be seen in proposals by Michel Desvigne, such as the transformation of the landscape of Plain du Var (France), which proposes a re-reading of the fragmented fabric on the banks of the river Var in Nice through operations of regrouping and usage changes (Figure 8). It is a design that starts from this systematic and integral vision of the landscape by recognising the role of the river as a hydraulic infrastructure and, at the same time, as a symbol of the identity of the territory and the population that inhabits it. The central arguments of the design, the search for a spatial coherence that provokes a unitary reading of the space and the creation of a new productive landscape linked to the geography of the river, try to answer to both realities. In another example, in this case in the land surrounding the city of Issoudun (France), Michel Desvigne and his team propose the coexistence of the agricultural function and the public space in lands with a residential function, an argument that blurs the limits between urbanism, architecture and ecological interventions (Figure 9). In fact, this line of thought and comprehensive design action is very relevant in the debate on the cross-sectional practices of the architect, since it moves towards a hybridisation between architecture and the other disciplines related to landscape. The landscape thus functions as a concept that brings together theories and methodological approaches, a vector for activating design action in the territory. Because the landscape, one of the most multidimensional12 fields of study, traditionally approached by two different scientific branches-environmental sciences and social-humanistic sciences13-, has enormous strategic potential for defining a logic of holistic action. In this sense, the recent Landscape Architecture Foundation’s14 Landscape Declaration recognises the role of the architect as a vital agent in the search for balance between nature and human action. The Declaration, supported by outstanding authors such as James Corner, Marc Treib, Kate Orff, Kongjian Yu or Martha Schwartz, makes an express call to establish collaborative dynamics. THE ROLE OF GIS TECHNOLOGY IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF TRANSVERSALITY IN LANDSCAPE DESIGN. After clarifying the renewed theoretical-conceptual framework around the landscape design, we again turn our attention to the GIS. Its system of superimposition of layers, as proposed by Mcharg, did not incorporate this demanded socio-cultural plane, which was already consolidated as a fundamental dimension of the landscape. This significantly challenged the approaches that had been capable of establishing a link between landscape design and this technique until then. The methodology originated from this initial environmental commitment decomposed the territory into different strata, although most of them were essentially biophysical in nature, ignoring largely many social, cultural or economic factors. In fact, the systematic approach of GIS can prevail as long as it is able to overcome a standardised vision of the landscape and include those factors linked to the characteristic local conditions of a given environment15. It is necessary to move the emphasis from quantitative assessment to characterisation, as Miriam García and Manuel Borobio16 have pointed out. Since this technology works with geographic information, the transfer of the arguments discussed to an operational level linked to the GIS began to be developed at first from fundamentally supra-municipal and regional scales, taking shape especially in new views and methodological approaches in the field of planning. In Spain, the Landscape Catalogues pioneered by the Landscape Observatory of Catalonia17 are very valuable references, since they are based on the adoption of a holistic vision of the landscape that is able to incorporate the wide range of factors that define it. These Catalogues, supported by citizen participation processes, map the values of the landscape from all its dimensions, including historical, aesthetic, social use, natural, symbolic and productive values (Figure 10). These instruments characterise, evaluate and establish landscape quality objectives under the ultimate objective of acting as a reference for the preparation of specific landscape action guidelines. And they make use of the GIS in order to deal with the heterogeneous set of landscape features to execute, from it, spatial analyses that allow to classify the region into landscape units from a multidimensional and integrated reading. If we pay attention specifically to the link between GIS technology and the landscape design process, in recent years, the urgency of closing what many have perceived as a growing gap between GIS and design18 has become evident, making explicit the need to adapt this tool to the contemporary vision of the landscape as “a product of engineering and as an expression of collective memory”, according to Adriaan Geuze19. Already in 2001 and 2008, a joint committee of landscape architects and GIS experts organised workshops in Santa Barbara (USA) dealing with this topic20. It was then that the term geodesign was suggested as a useful concept for the review of the interrelations between GIS and design tasks. The term was definitively established with the first annual Geodesign Summit in Redlands (USA) in January 2010, which continues to take place every year since then21. Geodesign is recognised as an emerging field22 whose broad definition, which refers to all project work taking place in the geographical space23,aims to respond to this call for transdisciplinary collaboration from the integration through GIS of different areas of knowledge and agents related to the landscape, including the citizenry itself, and pointing towards greater involvement of society in these processes24. It is a conceptual review of those studies linked to the first advances between GIS and landscape design influenced by Professor Mcharg’s arguments. Essentially, a renewed vision of the role of GIS in landscape design aspires to make this technique a common language that encourages the constant development of cross-sectional perspectives that enrich the design exercise and give it the necessary arguments to face the inherent complexity of the landscape. By generating cross-sectional views, the aim is to ensure that landscape design is not only committed to its natural and environmental context, but also to support processes that enrich the knowledge of socio-cultural issues. The integration between disciplines within a common methodological framework points towards a new landscape science that seeks to, in the words of D. Brian and T. Oles, “adapt tools from the many fields that already work with the landscape as a major object of research, including archaeology, ecology, environmental sciences, history, planning, psychology and sociology, into an integrated science, with its own specific methods, concepts and techniques”25. The European Science Foundation and the International Programme for European Cooperation in the Field of Scientific and Technical Research have made an express call for cross-sectional collaboration in landscape research26. Initiatives such as geodesign advance the formalisation of this science since, as M. Batty27 already stated, its nature responds to the use of GIS from a multitude of thematic approaches, in order to offer a holistic reading of the landscape in which we are going to intervene. In the words of M.F. Goodchild28, it is one more step in that science-based design, since it is shown as “an interface that involves the sciences traditionally concerned with design and those that acquire and accumulate fundamental knowledge on how environmental and social systems operate”. We can thus state that, from this framework, the acceptance of GIS responds essentially to the will to make this technique the means from which to construct a practice of cross-sectional design supported by the notion of landscape. There is no doubt that this line of research has interesting aspirations. However, it is relevant to know how these processes are implemented in the real practice of landscape design. In fact, there is a general consensus on the need to go beyond theoretical-conceptual discourse in order to reflect on the real possibilities and limits of this new field of action, which has resulted in an increasingly large bibliography of practical research29, although it is important to note that we are still facing an emerging field in its experimental phase. We can find a reference to this project logic in the postgraduate programme Landscape Urbanism of the Architectural Association School of Architecture, where they aspire to improve the disciplines of spatial design (architecture, landscape architecture, urbanism, etc.) by making them more relevant at multiple scales and promoting closer dialogues and debates between the different fields of knowledge that impact the landscape. For example, the “Intertidal Mediations” project, in the area of the Tamar River, addresses landscape design as a means of achieving a balance between a community, the sustainable exploitation of natural resources and the economic strength of tourism. The proposal responds to the dimension of the problems it addresses, therefore acting from a geographical sphere around the river on which the socio-ecological system of the area of study revolves (Figure 11). As in this example, the processes developed in the Architectural Association’s postgraduate programme address design under a broad scalar view and through a comprehensive reading of territorial dynamics. The methodology proposed with this approach is based on the use of digital techniques of modelling, simulation and visualisation of the geographical space. The project is built on the basis of processes that inform, for example, about optimal locations on the riverbanks according to criteria related to tidal movements, sediment flows, slopes, etc. (Figure 12). Therefore, one of the most relevant issues regarding the incorporation of an integral logic in the landscape design process through GIS lies in the fusion of the traditionally differentiated phases of analysis, diagnosis, design and evaluations/checks. Until now, GIS had worked as a support tool in the initial phases of the project and, with the progressive advance of technology, had proven to be useful in understanding how the landscape will change over time and the influence that certain transformations can have on that change. For this reason, they became valid tools for modelling and visualising scenarios of change and were added to other phases of evaluation and testing. In short, GIS had been used essentially as tools to extend the architect’s traditional observation and analysis work, without being directly involved in the design process itself30. When new disciplines and cross-sectional approaches were added to the process, the analyses came to reinforce design work, although from phases or methodological moments differentiated from the design task itself. On the contrary, the methodology proposed by this new line of work is based on a greater integration of crosssectional visions in the design through the blurring of traditional boundaries between the different phases. To achieve this objective, the work begins with the initial modelling of the existing reality, which incorporates all the variables imposed by the multidisciplinary framework and by the processes of citizen collaboration. The design process is conceived as the design of a scenario of change for this model, which creates a new model that is in turn subjected to impact assessments that enable to determine the viability of the proposal, visualised through simulations. The process is thus repeated and perfected until the final solution is achieved. By always working around the alteration and analysis of a model that integrates geographical, environmental and anthropic characteristics, the design, understood as the set of decisions informed by the geographical context that determines the way in which the space will be transformed, becomes the main resource of a comprehensive work system. Therefore, the support of transversal sciences and citizenship are part of the design instead of being a different element, since the model -the basic resource of the projectis built from the information they provide. In this way, the design arguments that are developed will come from a discussion that is inevitably linked to this information. In this new methodological approach to landscape design, the search to build cross-sections is evident: the GIS has an inherent integration potential, as it is capable of functioning as both a tool and a language shared between different spheres of knowledge and agents. One of its greatest strengths lies precisely in this quality. For this reason, it is pertinent to revalue this technique from its conception as a means of establishing integrating dynamics in our field. p.80 p.81 p.82 p.83 p.84 p.85 PROYECTO, PROGRESO, ARQUITECTURAN22_ ARQUITECTURA E INVESTIGACIÓN APLICADA. Today, architects are aware of the relevance of multidisciplinary teams and dialogues between diverse approaches, both in their professional practice and in teaching but, until now, there are no specific methodologies that guarantee a transdisciplinary project practice. Hence the relevance of recent lines of research aimed at the use of GIS in the development of new mechanisms for a comprehensive landscape project that results from collaborative strategies that review and update practices adopted. However, a question mark hangs over the future of these proposals. We have been able to verify that we are faced with a new protocol of action-that is to say, it is not a question of establishing a new discipline but rather of betting on the coordinated integration of those that are relevant to the landscape issue. Given the strong practical nature of these arguments, it is remarkable that, as of now, although the call for disciplinary and citizen collaboration is clear, an effective incorporation of the administrative and institutional sphere into these processes is still pending. Despite the conceptual progress made in defining comprehensive proposals for the transformation of the landscape, important efforts must be made to establish integrated management processes to implement these proposals. Their integral logic poses a constant crossover between diverse regulatory and administrative contexts, which makes them very difficult to be developed if there is no prior integration effort in this regard. We therefore stress the need to build a landscape policy that guarantees the viability of the proposals put forward. Only in this way can we, at least in part, overcome the inevitable utopian feeling that these proposals convey to us, which is an aspect that we must not ignore, despite the progressive prominence that the proposals are achieving. Landscape is presented as one of the most solid holistic frameworks of action and with the greatest possibilities, which would allow to build a comprehensive practice of architecture supported by the constant generation of cross-cutting elements based on systematic thinking and digital technologies. However, the development of the method must go hand in hand with the construction of a solid framework for application. The discipline and its associated fields, such as urban planning, must also play a role in this regard. 1. WALLISS, Jillian; RAHMANN, Heike. Landscape Architecture and Digital Technologies.
