Nuevos escenarios educativos para un nuevo siglo

Añón Abajas, Rosa María

Abstract

Our journal, “proyecto, progreso, arquitectura”, founded in 2010, is an initiative of the Research Group HUM–632 of the University of Seville and its objective is the sharing and debating of research within architecture. This six–monthly scientific publication, in paper and digital format, publishes original works that have not been previously published in other journals. The article selection process consists of a double blind system involving two external reviewers, following the usual protocols for serial scientific publications. The titles, summaries and key words of articles are also published in English. “proyecto, progreso, arquitectura” presents a clear, easy and flexible structure. It deals with all the subjects relating to the theory and the practise of the architectural project. The different “open themes” that compose our editorial line are sources for the conjunction of diverse investigations. The journal is directed toward architects, students, researchers and professionals related to the planning and the accomplishment of the architectural work. EXTERNAL ANONYMOUS PEER REVIEW. When the Editorial Board of the magazine has verified that the article fulfils the standards relating to style and content indicated in the instructions for authors, the article will be sent to two anonymous experts, within the specific field of architectural investigation and critique, for a double blind review. The Director of the magazine will communicate the result of the reviewers’ evaluations, and their recommendations, to the authors by electronic mail, to the address used to send the article. The Director will communicate the result of the review (publication without changes; publication with minor corrections; publication with significant corrections; its publication is not advisable), as well as the observations and comments of the reviewers, to the main author,. If the manuscript has been accepted with modifications, the authors will have to resubmit a new version of the article, addressing the requirements and suggestions of the external reviewers. If they wish, the authors can also send a letter to the Editorial Board, in which they will indicate the content of the modifications of the article. The articles with significant corrections can be sent to Advisory and/or Scientific Board for verification of the validity of the modifications made by the author. ETHICS STATEMENT ON PUBLICATION AND BAD PRACTICES PROYECTO, PROGRESO ARQUITECTURA (PPA) makes a commitment to the academic community by ensuring the ethics and quality of its published articles. As a benchmark, our journal uses the Code of Conduct and Good Practices which, for scientific journals, is defined for editors by the PUBLICATION ETHICS COMMITTEE (COPE). Our journal thereby guarantees an appropriate response to the needs of readers and authors, ensuring the quality of the published work, protecting and respecting the content and integrity of the articles. The Editorial Board will publish corrections, clarifications, retractions and apologies when necessary. In compliance with these best practices, PPA has published the arbitration system that is followed for the selection of articles as well as the evaluation criteria to be applied by the anonymous, external peer–reviewers. PPA keeps these criteria current, based solely on the scientific importance, the originality, clarity and relevance of the presented article. Our journal guarantees the confidentiality of the evaluation process at all times: the anonymity of the reviewers and authors; the reviewed content; the reasoned report issued by the reviewers and any other communication issued by the editorial, advisory and scientific boards as required. Equally, the strictest confidentiality applies to possible clarifications, claims or complaints that an author may wish to refer to the journal’s committees or the article reviewers. PROYECTO, PROGRESO ARQUITECTURA (PPA) declares its commitment to the respect and integrity of work already published. For this reason, plagiarism is strictly prohibited and texts that are identified as being plagiarized, or having fraudulent content, will be eliminated or not published in PPA. The journal will act as quickly as possible in such cases. In accepting the terms and conditions expressed by our journal, authors must guarantee that the article and the materials associated with it are original and do not infringe copyright. The authors will also have to warrant that, in the case of joint authorship, there has been full consensus of all authors concerned and that the article has not been submitted to, or previously published in, any other media. History records the pedagogical advances, which moved towards public education, and finally, to the construction of schools. Research into these events was delayed by almost one hundred years. The useful critical reflections on these would be published at the end of the 20th century and first years of the 21st, and would be combined with new concerns for progress to continue advancing, affecting the educational programmes and their corresponding architectural scenarios. The call for articles sought to bring about fresh contributions to compound the accumulated knowledge. The questions on contemporaneity and the projects for a future society, activate revisions on the educational models, and school buildings acquire protagonism as laboratories of architecture, provoking great interest. The many articles that have met this call confirm that it is time to innovate. The sad reality that surrounds us, affected by diverse political ideologies with opposed objectives, explodes, limiting social progress. The chaos and the uncertainty which has derived from the 20th century, force us to return to the origin, to review the classic methods, and to try and debate new ones. From the technical, scientific and academic sphere, the efforts concentrate on perfecting the solutions so that they serve all, with the purpose of reducing differences. Educationalists and architects have been working on it for decades, in some cases closely coordinated, as that of Hertzberger. Architects thought that architecture had a very important role in life and had much to do. Now, a sick and globalised world has the priority of regenerating nature by interventions that consume very few resources. Primary education must coherently educate in the civic values and attitudes that society needs, and train in basic abilities for that objective. We put creativity forward as an example, a skill that needs to be worked on at the individual and collective level, but which demands specific methods and consequent scenarios in each sphere. Architecture and education have a great relationship. It was understood thus in the key years, for the establishment and consolidation of obligatory education, and transcendental examples were born, some still admirable (those studied here refer to great architects, such as Asplund, Meyer, Scharoun, Lasdun, among others). However, the initial ideals were diluted, as massification forced simplification of the intense pioneering experiences. The facts incline us to think that the abandonment of intensity in architecture is one of the main causes of the loss of prestige of the institutions, initiating a degenerative process. It is concluded that it is essential from the first to the ultimate stages of education, to insist on the appreciation of elegant architecture. Reading the articles assembled here, we will again meet the questions that motivated the first steps of many architects towards research. It is cheering to verify how much the means at the service of researchers have evolved. Every day, more archives and libraries are accessible telematically, networks, databases and open systems favour a more agile and verifiable knowledge. Innumerable publications on the history of education and pedagogy, and a multitude of studies and theses on school constructions, can be listed in an instant by the most powerful web search engines. It should all affect the quality and clarity of research results. The number of contributions in all spheres has increased so much that the need for some criticism and synthesis has become urgent. The pioneering accomplishments of the 19th century, evolved in the 20th century in parallel to the historical development of modernity: the initial manifestations of the first third of the century; their revision and normalisation after World War II; the crisis of the 1970s; and postmodernism. Successively, the models are losing intensity, to the extent that opportunities to experiment are reduced, immersed in standard routines of general application. All movements have an optimistic origin, enthusiastic drive, a pivotal moment and decline. Depressed by negligence, many returned to look to the past to recognize that we were neglecting quality in something as primordial as the educational space. Thus, in the 1980s, many investigations were undertaken on school architecture that began to disseminate at the end of the 1990s, and first years of the present 21st century, and which are still continuing to add new contributions. Even though, in many cases, they are reiterative, it is encouraging to find new studies that support and reinforce the same conclusions as other contemporary or preceding studies, and still more encouraging to find complementary results that are emerging as novel, conclusive and truly propositive. Recognising the time invested by the scientific community, and so much accumulated knowledge on educational architecture, the experiments governed only by intuition and publications that disclose frivolous, decontextualized images, and devoid of reflection and reasoning, are almost always disappointing, while brilliant proposals are always accompanied by in-depth research. In practice, deficiencies are observed in the transfer of knowledge between different disciplines, specifically an abyss between pedagogy and architecture is observed in school architecture. Now, the important thing for progress is not to compete, but to collaborate. Nevertheless, in a society atomized into self-sufficient specialties, obtaining these types of partnerships is more than difficult. There are large global deficiencies, evident not only in underdeveloped countries, but also in the most developed, where political leaders do not cease to demand new educational reforms, whilst arguing that there is no need for new school buildings, because of the negative population growth indices, and the number of old and large schools that remain empty. Here in Spain, and almost without financing, the enthusiasm of determined groups of teachers and research groups has contributed to form a network of physical and digital school museums, preserving and showing the environment of the state school in its dawn and its zenith. The centenaries of important education institutions, throughout the world, have encouraged a multitude of studies on educational heritage. History shows that not all the elements of the network of school buildings had the same quality level, and, with the passage of the years, even the most emblematic have fallen into obsolescence, having lost their initial brilliance. This reality even affects those areas that we have idealised, such as France and Germany, as affirmed in the article by Anne-Marie Châtelet, the prestigious researcher and professor of Architectural History in several European universities, and whose publications on school architecture are of obligatory reference. She is a worthy guest in the section entre líneas, the article gives us a concise and exemplary comparison of the French and German models in the origin of obligatory education. The particular case of Strasbourg is approached, a border city whose ownership has alternated between both countries throughout its history, which is why its study still continues to be very revealing. The present time can seem a little unfortunate, darkened by wars and catastrophes, derived from a society evolved on the basis of that education which promoted a very efficient scientific–technological culture, but also injurious when it serves a dehumanised consumer society. The problem for architecture and education begins to be serious, and certainly at global level, when multitudes of local institutions are approaching the reclamation and revelation of the forgotten educational heritage, looking insistently into the past to learn to better project the future. The results are more interesting for us when they analyse essential aspects, such as the optimisation of space, the cultural interaction between school architecture and society, the impact on individual and social health, and more. I am sure that the articles presented here offer a valid set of references. Along with new reflections on classic examples of great validity, some new alternative proposals are incorporated, as diverse as the modest interventions of improvements in some school playgrounds in Barcelona. At the other extreme are the ambitious Finnish proposals, still too recent to be sufficiently assessed, such as the Saunalahti School by Verstas Arkkitehdit. At an intermediate point, we find the indisputably brilliant Fuji Kindergarten by Tezuka Architects, which has absolutely captivated everyone. I had hoped for articles from other fields of knowledge: pedagogy, philosophy, art and so many involved with life, education and the architectural project, but that has not been the case. Therefore, I insist on opening the eyes and the mind towards any usable activity to motivate creativity, and to make it useful for the advance towards a better society. There are still hidden proposals that went unnoticed at the time, or were forgotten, and which can now be appreciated in all their dimensions. Last summer, the Andalusian Centre for Contemporary Art held a monographic retrospective on the work of Gerardo Delgado Pérez, an important Sevillian artist. Trained as an architect, he was Professor at the Higher Technical School of Architecture of Seville. On several occasions, I had the opportunity to visit the exhibition entitled “aprendiendo de todas las cosas” (learning from everything). I was fascinated by the combination of the work as never before, especially a small interactive sculpture entitled, “juguete para conchita” (toy for Conchita), a key piece to understanding the whole, and which now comes to mind to confirm that architecture can be fully found in a small educational object. Any occasion of reflection and experimentation contains great potential to contribute to the future. p.15
