Holgado Ramos, Daniel; Maya Jariego, Isidro

Abstract

The parameters for betweenness centrality, closeness centrality and cliques require dichotomous data; therefore, we have converted the assessed data for the networks for familiarity, potential and lack of potential, taking as a value of 1 those values greater than 0. In the cases of the density of relationships and the clustering coefficient, we have chosen to use the dichotomous data, as they facilitate the interpretation and comparison of the results of each matrix. Source: By authors. Correlations between the networks In Table 2 we summarise the results of the correlation analysis based on the QAP procedure among the four types of relationships. This is a method for establishing and comparing correlations between dyadic relationships. Traditional statistical methods assume independence between the observations, which is not always the case with structural data. QAP avoids this problem by employing a bootstrapping method for calculating the expected distribution of correlation measures at the dyadic level between two networks, under the hypothesis of a fixed structure in each network, but with a random relationship between nodes (Hubert and Schultz, 1976). The probability of co-occurrence between relationships of acquaintanceship and collaborative relationships is close to 0.8. The perception of the potential for collaboration with other organisations is linked to the existence of the two prior relationships, although in this case with lower probabilities, around 0.4. Lastly, the perception of a low potential for collaboration is negatively related and with low values for acquaintanceship, collaboration and the perception of the possibility for collaboration. To facilitate comparison, in all the cases we apply Pearson’s correlation coefficient, despite the scales in one case being binary (collaboration network) and in two cases ordinal (network of potential and network of absence of potential for collaboration), on the basis of equivalence in the calculation algorithm with different measurement scales (Cohen et al., 2003). However, the same calculations were carried out with Jaccard’s coefficient when binary matrices were involved, and with Goodman and Kruskal’s Gamma coefficient when ordinal matrices were involved, and equiva- 96The Dichotomy between Providing Services and Supporting Social Inclusion in the Network... In this sense, the presence of actors with the capacity to mobilise, with previous collaborative experience and the resources to take on roles that generate spaces for collaboration, facilitates the creation of social capital, the consolidation of structures to spread innovations and best practices, and the application of strategies for community mobilisation (Watling Neal and Neal, 2019; Fresno, Daly and Segado, 2016; Berardo and Scholz, 2010). Limitations To evaluate the relationships between organisations, different measurement scales are used in function of the objectives of the research. Given that this can lead to limitations in the comparability of measures (Escobar, 1998), we turned to indirect strategies, such as the use of different correlation coefficients. We also standardised indicators, the calculation of which involved prior dichotomisation of the variables. However, in future research it would interesting to confirm the results of our study with another methodological framework. co n c l u s i o n s Growing social awareness of social problems and public needs and the proliferation of organisations and agencies to address these problems has led to an increase in resources aimed at community intervention. In Andalusia, for example, after the effects of the crisis and its impact in reducing available resources (Pérez and Navarro, 2013), there has been an increase in recent years in the options available for obtaining public funding for the design and development of social programmes (Maya-Jariego et al., 2020). However, this has not always led to more effective efforts to address these problems. This is, in part, due to growth in third sector activity and the emergence of new organisations that have increased the competition for resources, and even users, creating barriers for working in a coordinated manner to provide the necessary assistance. This study reveals the existence of a polarised structure of relationships among participating organisations, in function of their profile and field of action. This polarisation reflects the broader dynamics of the third sector social service sphere, and is related to the existence of a complex context of relationships between the state, the market and third sector organisations, along with the professionalisation of services and rationalisation of assistance directed at users. The existence of a group of organisations that act as intermediaries and that account for a large part of the relationships in the collaborative network, can act as a counterweight to this process of dependence on funding bodies and distancing from processes of community mobilisation.
