Abstract

In 2017 the building presented significant alterations, mainly consisting of large quantities of dirt, many cracks and the detachment of fragments affecting the ornamental concrete and mortar elements on its façades. This was the reason why it was necessary to develop a restoration project and the subsequent intervention on the façades. This research was based on a preliminary study phase in which the main causes of alterations in the building were identified, to evaluate the most appropriate preventive treatments for its conservation. The second phase focused specifically on controlling restoration work, mainly to verify the efficacy and suitability of the treatment applied through onsite tests and instrumental analysis techniques in the laboratory. INTRODUCTION The Peru Pavilion building at the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition in Seville (Spain) was designed in 1927 by the architect Manuel Piqueras Cotolí (1886-1937). It is notable for the presence of elements of South American indigenous and colonial architecture (Graciani 2010; Villegas 2010). Indeed, the building’s façade has been described as defining the creation of a Peruvian national artistic movement (Wuffarden 2003). The building is catalogued as a Building of Cultural Interest in the area of the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition and María Luisa Park. The entire complex and the façade are protected. The three-storey building has a quadrangular base with a main monumental door and a smaller 1a. The building’s façades combine brick walls with decorative elements in concrete and mortar, and sumptuous balconies with wooden carpentry inspired by the Palace of the Marquises of Torre Tagle in Lima (Crespo 2006). It is located next to María Luisa Park, on a plot surrounded by large grove of trees, with little sunlight and high humidity. These conditions, together with the passage of time, have directly contributed to the deterioration of the building’s façade. The pavilion (fig. Serrano. This restoration project, with the ultimate purpose of adapting the building as an administrative headquarters, included conservation and repair work on the façade (del Pozo 1987) As a result of deterioration in the years after the work carried out in 1983, further restoration work was required on the building’s façades due to the accumulation of large quantities of dirt and surface biodeposits, and the detachment of certain prefabricated concrete fragments, which jeopardised the safety of both workers and visitors to the building and also involved a loss of material that altered the original image of the building, coupled with severe chromatic alteration (fig. 1b, c, d). 1b, c, d). Una vez esclarecidas las causas de la degradación, se consideraron para la intervención y protección de los elementos y materiales de fachada los siguientes aspectos: and mechanisms responsible for degradation, as well as to determine the suitability of treatments that could be applied on the façade (Flores-Alés 2018; Guillitte 1995). The results ruled out the presence of soluble salts (sulphates and chlorides) as a cause of the degradation and confirmed the depth of the carbonation front in the concrete (5-6 cm), which reached the framework, causing its depassivation and subsequent corrosion, with the formation of expansive iron oxi-hydroxides that caused the detachments (Saetta 1993). Visual inspection of the building allows to identify severe damages by the action of water from the roof water removal systems (fig. 1b, c, d). Once the causes of alteration were established, the following aspects were considered for the intervention 1b 1c 1d 1b-1c-1d. Para ello se efectuaron pruebas no destructivas que ofrecieron resultados fiables. and protection of the façade elements and materials: -The carbonation effect was in a very advanced grade, considering impossible a mortar and concrete realkalinization treatment that guaranteed the regeneration of such a large surface and penetrated to an average depth greater than 5cm. -The steel reinforcement depassivation had a difficult solution in cases where they were not visible. -The action on the steel bars that were visible due to the removal of the concrete consisted of a mechanical cleaning followed by the application of a passivating product and the restitution of the detached material. -Considering the points described, the main purpose of the protection was to prevent the access of water that promotes the oxidation of steel. 2. OBJECTIVES The main aim of this study was to analyse the suitability of the waterrepellent treatments proposed by the management of the restoration project to select the option that offered the best performance. A series of tests were established to justify the decisions taken. A methodology to evaluate different treatments was developed and several tests were carried out to justify the selection of the best one to ensure even more that no chromatic modification occurred in the building’s façade materials. A follow-up was then carried out after its application in the building façades to assess the efficiency of the applied treatment and the conservation work performed, for which non-destructive tests were developed that offered reliable results. 3. 3. MATERIALS The materials studied in the façade of the Peru Pavilion were concrete, mortar and, secondarily, facing brickwork. In terms of the concrete elements, during the sampling process the prefabricated decorative elements were found to be composed mainly of a concrete matrix and an exterior mortar finishing layer. The mortar layer could have been used in prefabricated first of all to achieve better adaptation to the complex decorative forms of the moulds and thereupon the prefabricated elements were completed with conventional concrete (fig. 2). In contrast, the non-decorative elements (lintels, windowframes, simulated stone masonry, etc.) were built exclusively from concrete. The previous study carried out by authors demonstrated that the materials described have been fully characterized 124 LOGGIA Nº34 - 2021 ISSN: 1136-758-X En un estudio anterior realizado por los autores, los materiales descritos quedaron plenamente caracterizados (Flores-Alés 2018). Therefore, the most relevant data regarding the alteration process and the protection interventions was the mineralogical analysis of the cementitious materials due to the fact that indicative differences were observed between the mineralogy of the surface samples materials of the prefabricated elements and the material used in the inner matrix. To determine the previous state of the materials, concrete samples were taken keeping in mind the orientation of the façades to identify potential incidents: PPHO (concrete on the west façade), PPHN (concrete on the north façade) and one mortar specimen PPM (east façade). The number of samples was limited due to the nature of the building to avoid unnecessary damage during the drilling process. The analysis of changes in the physical properties was particularly important because these modifications would determine the condition and the suitability of the treatments proposed by the architect and the team of restorers working on the restoration of the Peru Pavilion who, after evaluating the need to apply a water-repellent treatment on the façade to limit water access (Flores- Alés, 2018), proposed three products: A. Tecnadis PRS: nanoparticulate active agents in isopropanol (5% concentration), which is suitable for porous and low porous materials and protects against the main diseases caused by the action of water and moisture (Costa 2014). C. Silo 112: product with an active base of oligomeric organo-siloxanes dissolved in demineralized water (10% concentration) (Gherardi 2017); both (B and C) are ready-to-use water repellent for protecting porous materials. They are based on a low molecular weight organ product. 4. CHOICE OF WATER REPELLENT TREATMENT To select the most suitable water repellent, the factors that were considered most decisive were the decrease in water absorption (waterrepellence), the change in colour and the variation in the water vapour permeability of the concrete and mortar. Bearing in mind that physical-mechanical degradation was only observed in mortars and concretes due to the effect of framework corrosion, resulting in cracking and detachment of material, the laboratory tests to confirm the adequacy of the water repellents were carried out on the mortars and concrete rather than on the brickwork because this was not necessary given the initial state of the latter. It was important to consider that the water repellent that offered the best performance in the deteriorated materials would provide adequate protection on unaltered brickwork. Therefore, it was only necessary to confirm that it did not suffer significant chromatic alterations. 4.1. Methodology Test pieces from the concrete and mortar controls were cut into square plates measuring approximately 1 cm thick with a surface area of 15-16 cm2. The different water-repellent treatments were applied by two layers horizontally and other two vertically with a brush on the test pieces 2. Product C showed slower absorption with the formation of a surface film due to the characteristics of the material, as indicated by * 126 LOGGIA Nº34 - 2021 ISSN: 1136-758-X 4.1. Then they were left for 20 days to ensure correct curing of the treatments (fig. 3a, b, c). At this point, all relevant tests were carried out to determine physical properties according to UNE-EN 16581:16 standard: vacuum porosity, water vapour permeability, water absorption and colorimetry. Porosity was determined by water saturation of the sample subjected to vacuum in accordance with the UNE- EN 1936:07 standard. To perform the water vapour permeability test, the wet vessel method defined in the UNE-EN ISO 12571:15 standard was applied (fig. 3d). Absorption was determined by means of a non-standardized test consisting of periodically weighing 1 cm thick specimens arranged on layers of wet blotting paper, thus ensuring that water access occurred exclusively from the underside of the specimen, avoiding its edges (UNE- EN 15801:10, UNE-EN 1925:99). Thus weight would increase with time until equilibrium was reached, at which moment the trial was deemed to have finished (Corpas 2002). An on-site colorimetric study was carried out with a Color-Pen DR-Lange portable colorimeter, using as reference the CIE L*a*b* model, to evaluate the mean values of the variations in the L, a and b coordinates, together with tone variation (VT) and overall colour change (ΔE), in order to check the colour variations using the following equations: ∆E = √(∆a^2+ ∆b^2+ ∆L^2 ) VT= √(∆a^2+ ∆b^2 ) Where, ΔL measures the difference in light and dark; Δa is the difference in red and green component; Δb is the difference in yellow and blue component. VT defines the chromaticness and ΔE was the total difference in colour. It is considered that changes greater than 5 can be perceived by the human eye, and differences of up to 10 are considered admissible (Delgado 2014). However, there are authors who consider lower limits for heritage buildings (Sharma 2005), considering the chromatic heterogeneity of the surfaces. The management of the restoration project and the restoration team accepted the criteria mentioned above. The measurements were carried out at least seven days after the application of water repellent, considering that after 24 h the treatment will be stabilised and dried. 4.2. Teniendo en cuenta la heterogeneidad cromática de LA RESTAURACIÓN DEL PABELLÓN DEL PERÚ (SEVILLA, 1927): SELECCIÓN Y ANÁLISIS DEL TRATAMIENTO DE HIDROFUGACIÓN RESTORATION OF PERU PAVILION (SEVILLE, 1927): SELECTION AND ANALYSIS OF WATER-REPELLENT TREATMENT 127 3d 4 3d. Water permeability and porosity of concrete and mortar samples 4c. Porosity and density of concrete and mortar samples for the 12 mortar and concrete samples yielded particularly high values, especially in the case of the mortar samples. The results obtained are shown correlating permeability vs porosity and porosity vs apparent density in figure 4, with mortar and concrete being susceptible to evident improvement through the application of a water repellent (Basheer 2001). This situation is entirely consistent with the diffusion of CO2 detected by the phenolphthalein test (Hous 2002) and the penetration of the carbonation front (Huet 2005), as well as rainwater penetration. Both factors favour the oxidation of the reinforcements. After the corresponding water vapour permeability test at 20ºC for 1 cm of thickness, the samples presented an average result of 80.3 + 24.8 g water/ m2·day in the case of concrete. The absorption tests revealed that the treatment that performed best for both materials (mortar and concrete) was treatment A, with C providing good results in concrete, while B had virtually no water-repellent effect in either of the two cases (fig. 5). Water repellents applied to a porous material imply a slight colour variation in the base material (Coronado 2018). In relation to the colorimetry results, considering that the treatment had to be applied to all the elements, the change in colour would be homogeneous in all of them and therefore the difference would not be easily noticeable, even more considering the removal of the pre-existent dirt from the façade. En cuanto a los resultados de la as can be seen on figures 4a and 4b. The mortar presents more homogeneous results, also related to porosity, with an average of 94.1+15.3 g water/m2·day, although it´s difficult to find a good correlation between both characteristics. This fact could be due to the amount of pores, the influence of the pore size distribution and connectivity of voids. The average porosity obtained for mortar was 30.95% in comparison with the 23.01% for concrete. These data revealed a linear correlation between porosity and density, as was expected (fig. 4c), very similar for both materials. The phenomenon of capillary action was not observed in the building, so it should be noted that the most relevant properties for the evaluation of the treatments were impermeability to liquid water and, to a lesser extent, permeability to water vapour. To evaluate the behaviour of the products proposed for the restoration work, 9 samples of each material were selected, using 3 for each of the treatments and leaving another 3 of each untreated material as references. The behaviour of the specimens treated with products A, B and C showed that permeability to water vapour decreased significantly in the concrete with all the treatments. The changes were less noticeable in the case of the mortars, especially with product B. This effect can be considered harmful in the long term for the preservation of the material, as such a difference could lead to water weakening in the transition zone between the two materials. el mortero como el hormigón son susceptibles de mejora mediante la aplicación de un hidrofugante (Basheer 2001). 6. La variación de cm3/10 min for H-25 and H-18 concrete, respectively, and 4.0-5.0 cm3/10 min for 1:3 and 1:4 cement mortars, respectively, which are consistent with the results obtained. The waterrepellent samples of both materials showed powerful hydrophobic activity, with similar waterproof scores and values in all cases, thus confirming the effectiveness of the water repellent applied. In the case of concrete, the treatment action has achieved an average decrease in water absorption of 93%, which shows a relevant level of improvement. The tests carried out on the bricks showed small differences between the original state and the threated one, since the ceramic materials showed no apparent alteration beyond the dirt. The data obtained in the colorimetry test confirmed the effectiveness of the cleaning process. Chromatic homogeneity was also observed in the final finishes of materials on the different façades. The variations in tone VT obtained for concrete and brickwork were 0.64 and 4.1, respectively. Overall colour change ΔE was 3.8 for concrete and 5.2 for brick. According to the values obtained, and considering the chromatic irregularity of the materials, it can be observed that the variation in tone and overall colour variation were below the tolerances detectable by the human eye, thus confirming the homogeneity achieved in the cleaning and waterproofing treatment, except for the ΔE value in brick, which was slightly higher, falling within the tolerance limits indicated above (Huet 2005). This finding can be explained by the fact that facing brickwork consists of irregularly alternating yellow and red bricks, resulting in a greater difference in the L*a*b* values, as evidenced by all the pieces analysed in each façade. 6. CONCLUSIONS The studies carried out on the materials used in the façade elements of the Peru Pavilion confirmed that carbonation, depassivation of reinforcements and their subsequent corrosion were the main causes of the deterioration of the ornamental elements of the façade. These processes are affected by the environmental conditions to which the building is exposed. Knowledge of these stages and mechanisms enabled the selection of the most suitable conservation treatment for the conditions of the materials to be preserved; hence, this kind of tests applied to building with a high heritage value are necessary 136 LOGGIA Nº34 - 2021 ISSN: 1136-758-X patrimonial con anterioridad a la toma de decisiones definitivas contenidas en el proyecto de restauración, de manera que se garantice al máximo la idoneidad de las acciones de protección previstas. The test performed to compare properties such as porosity, permeability to liquid water and colour of the different treatments allowed to determine their suitability given the protection needs, in line with the assessment of the causes of damage. Based on the foregoing, scientific and technical arguments could be presented to justify the selection of a nano-particulate water-repellent in organic solvent (A) for its application on the original decorative concrete and mortar elements. The control tests performed after intervention on the decorative concrete and mortar elements, through tests that will cause minimum damage, confirmed the correct application of the treatment, its adequate level of effectiveness, as well as the achievement of a correct chromatic and homogeneous finish on the four façades of the building. The water-repellent product could not be detected in the mortar matrix by analytical techniques, beyond the detection of fluorine in its composition by SEM-EDAX. The dilution of the main reagent in solvent (<5 % weight) and, in turn, in the material applied significantly reduces its concentration at the time of any identification, so this circumstance is not unusual. It is very unlikely that the alterations that the product undergoes due to the action of environmental factors can lead to some type of chromatic alteration.
