Effects of powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis) severity on durum wheat cultivars

Abstract

Powdery mildew, caused by Blumeria graminis, is an important disease of durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum) in Mediterranean conditions. In 1999, the environmental conditions were very favourable for the development of the disease in the South of Spain and the mycelium of the pathogen was evident from February to May in almost all the durum wheat cultivars sown by Agrovegetal S.A. in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz) and Escacena del Campo (Huelva). The cultivars showed a large variation in disease severity in the field, ranging from 0 to 70%, with different values in each repetition of the same place due to the spatial irregularity of the inoculum. The yield data collected in each plot of the same cultivar in Escacena del Campo is highly correlated with his final disease severity. In Jerez de la Frontera the yield ranking of varieties is also correlated with their powdery mildew severity. We have not observed other pathogens nor environmental irregularities in the field trials, and we concluded that the reductions in grain yield are mainly caused by powdery mildew.

The ungus diagnosis was made by di ec obse a ion o he whi e micelium o e he lea su ace ollowed by obse a ion a op ical mic oscopy o he hyphae and conidia (Zillinsky, 1983). The da a analysis was made wi h STATISTIX 1.0 (Analy ical so wa e, 1996). Fi s symp oms o disease we e e iden a he end o Feb ua y in plan s wi h phenological g ow h s ages be ween 20 and 30 acco ding o BBCH scale (based in Zadoks e al., 1974 and Lancashi e e al., 1991). Conclusions Powde y mildew may cause economically impo an g ain yield losses on du um whea cul i a s g own in Medi e anean condi ions in a ou able ag oclima ic condi ions. In Je ez de la F on e a condi ions, wi h an a e age g ain yield o 3742 kg/ha ( anging om 4837 kg/ha o TDA 6 o 2910 kg/ha o TDA 19) and a e age powde y mildew se e i y o 34.9% ( anging om 3.3% o TDA 4 o 60% o TDA 12) he e is a high nega i e co ela ion be ween he wo analysed cha ac e s. Then, in absence o o he pes s and diseases, he esis ance o powde y mildew o each cul i a has been c i ical in o de o ha e a high yield. In Escacena del Campo condi ions, wi h an a e age g ain yield o 1578 kg/ha ( anging om 2229 kg/ha o SIMETO o 1159 kg/ha o TDA 11) and a e age powde y mildew se e i y o 34.4% ( anging om 0% o TDA 4 o 63.3% o TDA 7) he e is a nega i e co ela ion o he wo analysed cha ac e s in he h ee plo s da a o each cul i a , and he a e age yield inc eases om 1s o 3 d epe i ion in +22% when powde y mildew se e i y dec eases in -53.1%.
