Abstract

PALABRAS CLAVE: PAISAJE, PATRIMONIO, ÁMBITOS PERIURBANOS, RUTAS TURÍSTICAS, SEVILLA, CARTOGRAFÍA The heritage landscapes located in the vicinity of the cities constitute complex territorial palimpsests. The landscape projects in these areas aim, among other aspects, to improve its heritage intelligibility by recognizing the relational nature of the landscape, developing integration mechanisms that allow a structured heritage interpretation of the territory. This paper presents a methodology to address this goal based on techniques of graphic analysis and expression. Specifically, a method is proposed for the definition of tourist-heritage routes that combines a descriptive-analytical phase, supported by advanced spatial analysis techniques, with a second experimental step. The combination of objective parameters and experiences of a subjective nature defines a methodological line that tries to face the intrinsic complexity of the peri-urban landscape. The method has been applied in the territorial area located at the northwest of the city of Seville. The urban expansion model of the second half of the 20th century has formed an image of the peripheral areas as lacking an identity (Koolhas, 2002; Muñoz, 2009), largely compromising their heritage intelligibility (Ureña y Coronado, 2018). It is therefore necessary to reduce the serious situations of decontextualisation and functional disconnection of many of the heritage pieces found in these environments through the development of mechanisms and project procedures that, due to the relational nature of the landscape (López Sánchez et al., 2020a), improve the visibility and integration of the heritage content into the contemporary landscape (Hökerberg, 2013; Beltramo, 2015). Under this objective, this paper proposes a cartographic method for the design of touristheritage routes. These routes are intended as resources for the structuring and interpretation of the heritage landscape; mediation tools to bridge the gap existing between the vague landscape reality and the target audience (Moulin y Boniface, 2001). They are compositional elements relevant to the recognition of the landscape because the act of moving through the territory creates cognitive connections and knowledge of the place (Turnbull, 2007). Moreover, when the heritage meaning of the landscape is conveyed in situ, the correlation between anthropic processes, heritage pieces and landscape morphologies appears to the observer with greater clarity and immediacy, favouring the understanding of the systemic and evolutionary aspects of landscapes. Therefore, the routes are a very useful resource for implementing a structured heritage interpretation from the landscape. The proposed methodology is based on graphic expression, conceived as a means of research in itself that supports the project exercise, when used as an exploration, learning and synthesis exercise. The scientific and artistic qualities of cartography (Maza Vázquez, 2015) are used to favour the interpretation of the results and thus be able to make spatial decisions for planning and the project. Although it can be easily extrapolated to 137 expresión gráfica arquitectónica 44 other peri-urban landscapes, the method has been applied specifically to the territory that extends to the north-west of the city of Seville (Fig. 1). It is a representative example of those areas located near to large cities, where the landscape diversity and the historical depth of the territory coexist with fast roads, electrical infrastructures, business parks or commercial areas that fragment the landscape and make it very difficult to see it as heritage (Fig. 2). The scope of the study contains a dense dispersed heritage network that encompasses a temporal arc of great historical depth and that has top-class heritage resources, such as the Archaeological Site of Itálica, the Chalcolithic dolmens of Valencina, the site of Carambolo or the Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo (Fig. 3). However, the heritage assets are in a situation of isolation that does not facilitate relationships with other nearby assets or with the landscape on which they are situated and, consequently, the historical connections between them remain hidden from the public. Construction of a cartographic method for the selection of routes Phase I. Descriptive-analytical approach The methodological procedure presented below is carried out in two phases. The first phase, of a descriptive-analytical nature, uses the capabilities for advanced spatial analysis offered by Geographic Information Systems, hereinafter GIS (López Sánchez et al., 2020b). The ArcGIS® and ArcMap™ 10.4.1. software from Esri has been used. Firstly, a network analysis has been performed that detects the most efficient ways to connect the specific heritage assets of the territory in terms of distance and time (Fig. 4), for which the topography of the terrain offered by the Andalusian Digital Terrain Model (DTM) of 10 metres/pixel (2008-2009) was considered, produced by the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalusia, along with average speeds of 5 km/m for a person on foot and 15 km/h on a bicycle. Although the optimisation of the walks is a relevant issue in the analysis, it is deemed essential to analyse this information together with the landscape reality of the area of study. ra, de carácter descriptivo-analíti- co, recurre a las capacidades para el análisis espacial avanzado que ofrecen los Sistemas de Información de Geográfica, en adelante SIG (López Sánchez et al., 2020b). La prime- 1 2 138 The methodological process outlined seeks to select the routes taking into account both their connecting-structuring vocation and their intrinsic historical and landscape value, therefore, the map of optimal routes obtained will then be compared with a cartography of suitable territory gradients to house touristheritage routes (Fig. 5). This map is the result of a weighted cartographic overlay of four cartographies that represent influencing criteria for the selection of routes: the visibility of the landscape (1), its pollution levels, both visual (2) and noise (3), and the historical depth of the current uses of the land (4) (Fig. 6). The weighting used in the analysis has assigned a weight of 40% to the historical depth of the territory, 30% to its visual pollution, 20% to its visibility and 10% to its noise pollution. The method allows for additional criteria to be added, as well as amendments to be made to the weights assigned in the weighted sum. The objective of these analyses is to support the architectural project exercise, an evolutionary process with an inherent subjective-creative component, which is why they must be able to take on different approaches, reformulations and adaptations. To analyse the first criterion, a study of the visibility of the territory has been carried out through GIS, completed with the analysis of the visual basins of the main slow mobility routes in this landscape (Fig. 7). To carry out these analyses, the Andalusian DTM of 10 metres/ pixel has been used again. The cartography of the second criterion has been obtained from field work and the analysis of the 2019 orthophoto of the Aerial Orthography National Plan (PNOA in Spanish), available through the National Geographic Institute. The cartography of the third criterion has been generated thanks to the open data available in the National Noise Pollution Information System. Finally, the cartography of the fourth criterion has been the result of a comparative analysis between the current uses of the land and those in 1956, the date of the first record of uses of the territory under study (Fig. 8). Thanks to the semantic consultation of the information available in the attribute tables of the maps of land use and vegetation cover for Andalusia, available on the Andalusian Environmental Information Network, it has been possible to identify the land uses that have not undergone changes between 1956 and today, have experienced 3 4 139 expresión gráfica arquitectónica 44 1. The contrasted analysis of the cartographic results obtained allows us to develop a first selection of potential tourist-heritage routes. Phase II. Experimental approach The second part of the methodology is experimental in nature and is based on the action of walking. As F. Careri (2002, 2016) has already drawn on, walking is a cognitive and creative instrument that allows us to deepen the interpretation of the landscape. It is, in the words of J.V. Caballero et al. (2016), “an experience that allows us to develop new ways of understanding places in a sensitive and imaginative way, in which the road is used as the guiding principle”. As pointed out by these authors, walking can undoubtedly be considered a method to get to know the territory again, as through it one can understand some of the material and immaterial characteristics of the places crossed and review pre-established mental images. In short, “the slowness, the proximity of the subject matter and the variety of sensations make it easier for the landscapes to be truly discovered by the subject, who develops, from that experience, their own interpretive synthesis” (Caballero et al., 2016). And in the experience of walking, the drawing that accompanies the journey becomes the research resource par excellence. Gracias 6 7 8 9 142 (Otxotorena, 2016) that, as stated by P. Chías (2018), is integrated into the broader category of travel drawing and constitutes a substantial part in an architect’s training and professional practice, because knowing what to see and learning to convey what is seen converge in it. In addition to drawing, photography is used as a means to complement the observation and analysis process. J.M. Otxotorena (2018) points out how this art has acquired an extraordinary role among an architect’s working instruments, given its ability to distance us from a reality that also brings us closer and helps us understand. This phase has been drawn up into three “landscape drifts” that run along the main routes selected preliminarily in Phase I: the Seville-Santiponce connection, extended towards the Itálica green route up to its intersection with Cañada Real de las Islas (1); the ravine itself, up to its intersection with the Water Route (2); and, finally, the section of the Water Route that crosses the scope of the study (3). The methodological process developed analyses and records these paths through a data collection that notes the visual and noise perceptions experienced during the walk. A system of graphic codes is used for this. These codes are drawn on to a map printed on paper, which are also accompanied by written notes, sound recordings, sketches and taking of photographs. Once the “landscape drifts” and their corresponding data collection have been carried out, the landscape syntheses are made, consisting of subjective maps whose objective is to represent the character of the landscape (Figs. 10, 11 and 12). For this reason, issues such as the chromaticism of crop fields, visually dissonant elements or landscape landmarks enjoy special attention in this cartographic exercise. Results The results obtained after the analysis indicate that, in accordance with the heritage, landscape and visual characteristics of the area, the most relevant routes are located in the countryside of Gerena and the northern cornice of Aljarafe. However, the analyses of optimal routes show the convenience of selecting some routes between the towns of Aljarafe, given their potential connector. As the characteristics of the routes differ quite a cual elabora, a partir de esa experiencia, su propia síntesis interpretativa” (Caballero et al., 2016). Diagram of the complete extension of the main routes selected. Author: Marina López 14. Map of the extension of the scheme of tourist-heritage routes designed in the territory situated north-west of the city of Seville. Author: Marina López lot in relation to their landscape value, it has been deemed convenient to carry out a route project that includes a hierarchy between them, so that the main sections are located in areas with the greatest landscape value. The first tourist-heritage route will be the one that connects the city of Seville with the Archaeological Site of Itálica, the main heritage centre of the scope of the study. The site will operate as a landmark, as the first destination to visit. The old Santiponce low road, now the camino de la Señorita, has been selected. This road has been marked on historical maps since at least 1811 and is currently recognised as part of Seville’s metropolitan green corridor. The corridor is 68 km long and its ends are, on the one hand, the town of Santiponce and, on the other, the localities of Dos Hermanas and Los Palacios and Villafranca (Fig. 13). Therefore, this connection could strengthen Itálica’s relationship with Seville and, in turn, with the localities situated in the population axis of Guadalquivir (Camas, Tomares, San Juan de Aznalfarache, Gelves, Coria del Río y La Puebla del Río). This route along the Guadalquivir also has historical value in itself, as the river is the main structural element of the territory; a determining factor in the selection of settlements and trade routes since prehistoric times. Once Itálica has been reached, it is necessary to identify the routes that connect the heritage resources and that, in turn, offer a scenic route of interest. The selection has been developed in a scaled way, firstly detecting long-distance supra-landscape trails, that is, those that exceed the scope of the study to connect the five landscape areas of the territory: the fluvial landscapes of the Guadalquivir river, to the east, and Guadiamar river, to the west, the foothills of the Northern Range of Seville to the north, the northern cornice of Aljarafe to the south and the countryside of Genera in the centre (Fig. 14). These paths, known as “spine routes” or first level routes, correspond to the routes of greatest scenic interest and have been explored in the landscape drifts. The spine routes link with the “connecting routes” or second level routes. These routes are intra-landscape, that is, they remain in a specific landscape area and their function is to communicate with each other to the Resultados Los resultados obtenidos tras el análisis indican que, de acuerdo con las características patrimoniales, paisajísticas y visuales del área, las rutas más pertinentes se sitúan en el campo de Gerena y en la cornisa norte del Aljarafe. 13
