Abstract

Trabajo a ciegas. Separación entre piezas 4 cm Six questions to try to understand the painting of Paco Lara-Barranco Juan Carlos Román «Painting is the beloved image that enters through our eyes and spills over the brush tip —and love is the same! Spewing, spewing, spewing is the new sperm from which all future painters of the world will be born, given that Velazquez's spewing is ecumenical». Salvador Dalí What makes a tosiriano interested in painting and overall for abstract processes? If I had to respond to that question, my answer would be what or who is a tosiriano and overall, what is the abstractive process? tosirianos aren't an evasive, interstellar species within the Independent Confederation Systems taken from Star Wars, but that is the name given to those born in Torredonjimeno, in the Spanish province of Jaén, while the abstract processes of contemporarean art was the dialectic interpretation of Tomás Barros Pardo to the abstraction that crossed the Atlantic Ocean starting in the decade of the 1950's. But, who am I talking about? It would be easy to answer that question in Torredonjimeno, since everyone know who Paco Lara-Barranco is, an artist who yearns to understand what is happening to painting until it is able to speak to us, because painting or perhaps it would be better said, the pictures who choose or adopt people with certain special capacities to perpetuate the complex art of painting. Said in another way, Paco Lara is nothing more than in intermediary step between one painting and another, or between the painting which has been made at one time and will evolve in another moment, but without ever moving. Because painting is not just color made into a cream and placed on a canvas, but it is, first of all, the voluable character of this whimsical substance in its 81 chromatic instability which is mixed or cloudy, with little or nothing able to be done. It is not possible to paint as if one were speading butter on a slice of bread, mechanically covering the surface of the canvas; painting requires a certain state of being from the artist, which might be described as being between serenity and fury; a simulated sense of control, while each brushstroke deposited enervates the picture in its anguishing need to exist. Perhaps, when talking about painting, we should agree upon the principal catagories. For painting we understand the representation through images of what we are as a society. That is why the images are grasped, captured and resulting are the partes that make up our cultural norm and the preface of a long path of emerging iconographs. Without wishing to enter into a closed and sterile debate, I share the fact that photography is a mechanical picture1, technological and popularized, since due to the multiple gadgets at our reach, we can capture images, edit them, and turn them out in a high quality and in whichever format we want. In the end, we are all painters. But the painting I'm referring to is something which makes all of us humble since, though the procedures seem simple, the result comes to us after years of arduous learning. And learning, does not mean knowing how to do something, but being able of building a pictoral image. What makes Paco Lara-Barranco produce series? Series end up being the multiple options/soluctions to a specific problem, with problem being understood as the way/s to solve the conflicts proposed the different artistic processes which intervene in the fact and act of the painter. The soluctions could be mere rehearsals or poetic contructions which will reach the category of art; and for that the method of work in a series is shown as equally disturbing and stimulating and which obligates the artist to be attentive to emergencies, productions and unexpected happenings which could be found along the way. It could be like an archeoligist which, when searching for an Egyptian tomb, finds a McDonald's billboard. Being a painter is being alert to any possible contingency or change. Abstract painting, being understood as a genealogical and established construction, has three methodological alternatives. The first one 1 Perhaps the correspondence for with in the cinema and the theater would be that the cinema is a canned and/or streaming theater. 82 consists of a complex conjunction of factors made up of the spirituality of emptiness with the search for the truth through science and language (Sol Lewitt, Ad Reinhardt, etc.). A second path has its basis in that which is iconoclatic, understanding that the memory of gestures and acts overshadow the vastness of the sublime and incomprehensible (Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, etc.). This structure strengthens abstraction remembering the principle until it becomes poetry. Finally, the third branch is found in the concreteness of the pictorial material2, its sticky, creamy and oily nature; which is admired by spectators and fans of paintings, while the question is asked; How and when did Velázquez make that brush stroke to hit the mark on the color tone and in its adhesion he makes you think that you see flesh and not paint? This third option examines detail, the brushstroke, the greedy smear of paint, the expressive gesture which brings directionality in the splatters, etc. It is an abstraction that has grown drunk on details, with small fragments of paintings which, without being abstract, but just the opposite, allowing us to enjoy the painting in its primitive and physical essence. It is feeling the painting as a feast for the senses, almost a devouring pleasure (from Antoni Tàpies to Willem De Kooning, etc.). What does an artist whose theme is the brushstroke wish to tell us? In Paco Lara-Barranco's case it is the discursive treatment of physical material, the presence of texture of the paint and the trace of the utensils in the changing perception of the surface of the picture by means of the incidence of light. This configuration of the pictoral plane contradicts the post-pictorial norm of Ad Reinhardt about what should not be done: Nothing of texture. Texture is naturalist or mechanical and it is a vulgar quality, overall the texture of pigment or paste. Spatula, slash the canvas, blurred paint and other techniques of action are not very intelligent and should be avoided. Without accidents of automatism3. 2 Pictorial soup, as Salvador Dalí would say. 3 ReinhArdt, Ad. (1991) Art-as-art. Berkeley and Los Angeles: University of California Press, pp. 203-207. [Edition from Barbara Rose]. 83 For which we have, on the one hand, the search for the synthesis of the conclusive character, and on the other the epidermic carnality of the painting. Two questions which, at first sight, appear to touch two different branches of the abstraction tree. On the brush everything is liquid. Liquid paint has been the pocedural and conceptual theme un Paco Lara-Barranco's work; a question which aligns itself with the metaphor which Zygmunt Bauman gives to the forms in which both the collective as well as the individual must transmute themselves before an unstable and unpredictable context. That which is liquid is to be understood as a blurry configuration when faced with changing situation; and it is precisely this instability of the landscape which invites us to be flexible and fluid as an adaptable form before an uncertain context. Paint is liquid as a material, category and disciplinary surrounding and its states adapt to any sphere or circumstance, but once immobility is reached and thus dryness, it becomes a set image for the moment in which the artist must navegate or more precisely, surf. The best painting is that which has been able to adapt to the brush and the brush to the wishes of the artist. What does an artist who does monochromes want to say to us? Monochromes are the end of a project whose objective is synthesis. The circumstance of arriving to the same conclusion of reductionism and absence is thinking that less is more essential. Painting detached from theme, action, chromatic instability, composition, in short, from all that which provokes in the spectator the anxious curiosity to discover sensations through the image given shape, which would lead us to tranquility, immobility and silence. A monochromatic picture is not contemplated, since in it there exist no changes. The totality of the surface transmits just one signal, we could say that it voices just one musical note, and it is that its communicational uniformity is where it gets its strength, but also what wears it out. We don't find a story, but the literature which has been annexed to a unique and specific message. The monochrome can be seen and it is clear, it's white4 or 4 Alphonse Allais entitled, at the end of the 19th century, a completely white painting: “First communion of anemic young ladies in the snow”. 84 black5, with more motive. Knowing a monochromatic painting is giving unambiguous meaning to the color and tracing the possible imperfections (nuances) of the pictoral trace. Thus, the important aspect isn't so much the image as the material, nor does the color mean as much as the texture, and all the expressive possibilities which surround that which is specific to painting. Painting monochromes is to betray the unspeakable essence of monochrome in favor of the painting. Monochromatic painting is just an anecdote, what matters is to continue painting. Paco Lara-Barranco seemed to know this quite well if we look at his work between 2016 and 2018. He named these work processes “Non-projects and Anti-projects” and they are based on textured sections, y se fundamentan en tramas texturadas, a latticework drawn over white layers, demonstrating both the physical part of the painting as well as its base. They are works where which is real is underlined, but also limited by the paint, and to a lesser extent, by the color. The color allows us to see what the painting expresses, without the latter, the color makes no sense. Painting which are named for what they are, painted and numbered to be contemplated as experiments which under the realm of research are noted as options before a future conclusion. The color and its formal disposition act more as a framework than as a significant entity. The painting, once colored, plays with the contours, with the same margins as the bases, as if the color were literally pushed from the picture and saw its existence at the limit and precipice of what is meaningful. What is real and its physical extensions given by the paint take control of the field of symbolism. The weight, texture, size, format and even the smell of paint are all present in a work whose inital structure are silence and transcendentalism in its apparent monochromatic configuration. That which Yves Klein referred to as: “zones of pictoral immaterial sensability”, for the feeling of emptiness which his blue paintings generated. How has Paco Lara-Barranco's new painting evolved, when he tells us that what is perceptual in terms of visibility and invisibility is the new approach to his work? The protagonism of the painting maintains its 5 On the other hand, Paul Bilhaud carried out the same outbreak, but with a black painting: “Fight between black men in a cave at night”. 85 liquid state, which results in a mobile and fluid behavior, without clinging to anything, except its own materiality. He understand painting as layers of time, so that the painting is no more than the paralysing result of temporal fluidity. An activity in which the artist surfs that which is liquid until the time (dryness) detains that moment and can define a though that has been built from discontinued periods. These new paintings initially remind us of those which were painted in white and drawn on with graphite in 2018 (Figures 1 and 2) (pp. 14-15 of this publication). At that time the painting was bordering the limits of color and incorporating a weak connection, a reticle which could organize and plan these grand extentions of nothing. Because the white monochromes take us back to the beginning, to the all and the nothing at the same time. If its diagonal lines serve to correct this sensation of prolonged paleness, the current works of Paco Lara-Barranco are based on the representation of lattice networks which might remind us of the architectonic solutions and the light nuances developed before the light projected by the sun of justice. These painting resources, built through layers of weaves that hide the light and the shadow of a painting, are built on a new skin which plays with the invisibility of the background, which may well be a figure. Since therefore the backgrounds of these new painting appear to look at us like someone who wishes to obtain much desired privacy. This visual resource channeled towards the painting has a direct example in traditional Arabic architecture known as mashrabiyas. These contstruction are windows and lookout points that are formed by lattice work and whose principal function was to let in outside air, cool it and redirect it through air currents to the interior of the room. It is the mashrabiyas, and perhaps the light-play generated in the space, together with the proportions of Andalusian architecture, the latter finding itself in debted to centuries of an inheritence of Arabic culture, which produces the image of which, in an unconscious way, nurishes Paco Lara-Barranco. Because I go back to what I said at the beginning, Paco is a paintor and native of Torredonjimeno, in the province of Jaén. 86 Life behind the lattice Regina Pérez Castillo 1. Lattice Lattice is one of the most important elements of mashrabiya, the type of lookout window which is most characteristically gound in traditional Arabic homes. This vital surface served a primordial function in Muslum architecture and, therefore, in that culture: preserve a family’s privacy. The mashrabiya was designed as a resting place, a place to get a bit of fresh air and observe streetlife without being seen. In the same way, the geometric material of the lattice kept the beautiful decorations of the interior of the home hidden, thus complying with the precepts of the Koran which condemn ostentation of riches. The lattice establishes, therefore, a game of amusement for the eye, the delight of an observer in the shadows. We are referring to the practice of voyeurism which goes beyond that which is strickly sexual and which alludes to the satisfaction of another libido, that which is visual. From the other point of view, the observed individual, who feels a certain frustration at keeping out and not being able to discover. 2.Expression and dimension Paco Lara’s painting takes place behind the lattice, and is, also, the lattice itself. If we abide by the second premise, this is, the surface of the 87 if the casual fall of some papers on the floor is a hint to build a newly discovered reality formed upon staring at the floor. By projecting this act in his painting he makes us partake this plastic game that originates in the intimacy of his studio. Because playing games makes us feel alive, and this artist vitality is transmitted to us. It takes us to the innocence of our infancy, allowing us to fearlessly explore all of our senses to find whatever makes us vibrate. Those vibes derived from “playing” with paint becomes even more conspicuous while working with different paintings at the same time, because everything is connected and this is how it must be. In the middle of this apparent chaos, accident and contingency, emanates a new order, a balanced plastic structure, in harmony, since the artist takes over the composition of plastic elements, in many cases driven by his intuition. Intuition was extraordinarily important in the working process of North American artist Lee Krasner. Led by her intuition Krasner built her paintings beginning with that first unpredictable stain. Michel Foucault says “there is not truthful knowledge but the one coming from intuition, this is, through a singular act from pure and watchful intelligence, and through the deduction that links evidences” (Foucault, 2009: 59). In accordance with Foucault’s doctrine, Lara-Barranco plots a path in which all paintings are connected, allowing for the total integration of all the paintings built at the same time and are part of this exhibit. An inmaterial voice In the middle of this pictorial palimpsest of chromatic, interspersed, crossed, layers, between the straight and curved line, between the tangible and intangible, where does one find the imagined? Where can the immaterial voice which the image pronounces be found or not found? This voice is a product of intuitive thought which guides the painter during his artistic adventure. Let’s think of immateriality as a pictorial fact, as a quality of the creative process, which turns into a plastic reality. From imagination to painting, from thought to reality. A reality submerged in a perceptive game which leads us to ask ourselves, do we see, or do they see us? As we look as some of his Works through that geometric lattice which traps us, we ask ourselves, which side are we one? Who is really looking? Since Lara-Barranco began in 2017 to include geometric elements in his are, the space begins to transform 94 itself. (Figures 1 and 2) (p. 27 of this publication). What has happened since then? A leap in the “color vibration” has been produced, as José Jiménez interprets the artist’s work, to the space vibration that is evident in these latest works. It is a fluid, dynamic, flexible space, which activates our imagination. Now, what we see goes beyond our sight, beyond the painting, what we see is hidden, is covered, trapped or about to be revealed. It is a mystery, an explosión of life and a daydream all at the same time. The artist affirms in his book Completing Drawing: “What you see is what you see” (Lara-Barranco, 2018: 36). That is how he defines plastic fidelity to pictorial means, in tune with the thoughts of art critic Clement Greenberg, who, in his text Modern Painting, defines the independence and autonomy of painting. Nevertheless, in this exhibition, the painting guides our eyesight through it with depth and transparency. It becomes versatile and dynamic, and its immaterial voice becomes palpable with each stroke and patch color. Mind you, it is an autonomous voice. Color and shape acquire their own autonomy, they move away from their sensitive nature to activate our artistic sensibility in a world which is becoming more and more abstract and unrecognizable. That is how Paco Lara-Barranco speaks to us. Bibliography derridA, J. (2005) La verdad en pintura. Buenos Aires: Paidós. FoucAult, m. (2009) Las palabras y las cosas. One may even ask which is the more intense pleasure: to drink, or make water?» Karen Blixen Paco Lara-Barranco has dedicated his life to an artistic ideal with a sincerity that is rare and valuable. He has searched fearlessly in whichever direction his art pulls him. But everything he does is coloured by a primary concern: the slippery temporality of it all. In the series of photographic self-portraits (Through Time project, June 10 1994—work in progress), (Figure 1) (p. 30 of this publication) for instance, one for each day of almost thirty years, is interesting on the surface as a record of senescence. But upon pondering the “more than 12,000 images”, one begins to realise that there is another layer that goes beyond the novelty of seeing a red-cheeked youth grow bald and wrinkled. It should be noted that many of these images are “black images”. The black images correspond to long periods of time in which the author did not take the photograph on a daily basis. Beyond this fact, this project emphasizes 97 the psychology of man, his personal growth, his changes of circumstance, attitude, and opinion as he moves through the phases of life, with only one thread: The discipline and unswerving belief in his art that give us a man capable of continuing a project so long. Lara-Barranco is fascinated by the passage of time, and the mysteries of that one-way voyage are nowhere more apparent than in this series of self-portraits. Another long, ongoing project that speaks of similar dedication, Carpe Diem project, (daily drawing since the 13th of September of 1993—work in progress) treats chronology and temporality not as senescence, but evolution and development (Figures 2 and 3) (p. 31 of this publication). When one enters Lara-Barranco’s wall-less studio, which occupies the entire second floor of his house, he notices the northern light flooding through the large window. He notices the smells; Linseed oil, spray paint, and something else, but I don’t recognise it. He notices the organisation, all the multifarious materials and supports in their places. But he also notices signs of labour. Paint smatters walls and floor, and a canvas, or more often, canvasses (Lara-Barranco likes to examine a theme or idea on more than one support simultaneously), are pinned to his main painting wall, while other walls hang with paintings, maquetes, sketches, photos, written snippets of ideas. Even if one stands there alone, one feels at the centre of a maelstrom of artistic creation. Lara-Barranco gropes for meaning, either psychological or philosophical, in an existential reality, and converts it to a corporeal manifestation that can be seen. Turning a thought, or a simple perception, into an object, in the hope of triggering the same truth in the mind of the viewer of that object. As he himself puts it, he does not paint what he knows, instead he, “understands painting as a process towards the unknown”. It is a risky proposition, but Lara-Barranco says that all successful art requires risk. He mentioned once in conversation with me that he had found an old journal entry of his that said: “Blindly. I work blind. Blindly we go through the world/through life most of the time”. Lara-Barranco shares with us his wonder, his confusion, and his ardour for artistic insight, and the longer one looks, the more he finds. In this, his most recent series: Between the Visible and the Invisible, Lara- Barranco uses layers, each partially obscuring the one that went before. 98 The attentive viewer is taken through time as he divines the receding concision, and like memory, the further back he goes, the more vaguely seen they become. Aside from Lara-Barranco’s more laboured works, those that take months and an infinite number of decisions, there are the light, balletic, calligraphic paintings/drawings as Painting 159 (triptych) and Painting 160 (pp. 78-79 and p. 67 of this publication), that dance across the canvas like a late Matisse, but without the figuration. They are among my favourites in their lightness and clarity, the inverse of obfuscation, they touch heart and eye with “joie de vivre” before the mind has a chance to analyse or understand. Above all, Lara-Barranco cedes leadership of his process to the process itself. He looks to the work to tell him which way to proceed. At times it makes his paintings, such as the Double Time project (June 10 1964—work in progress) (Figures 4 and 5) (p. 33 of this publication), or Painting 155 and Painting 156 (diptych) (p. 72 and p. 75 of this publication), the result of cognitive decision, while at other times the canvas speaks of his love for the labour he undertakes. The Painting 159 (triptych), already quoted, for example, is sumptuous and visceral. The textures and the movement are spontaneous, they are felt and therefore we feel their sensuality and force. A look at Lara-Barranco’s life work confirms what the artist himself will tell you: “The artist has to search, search and search, and with his work he has to continually reaffirm himself”. His future work will be unexpected, without doubt, but will build on the accumulated land he has explored and conquered. 99 Pintura 164, octubre-octubre 2021 Óleo sobre lino, 46 x 38 cm Between the Visible and the Invisible. Paco Lara-Barranco Alberto Hevia The title of the work presented by Paco Lara-Barranco in Birimbao, speaks to us about the base which the artist has found to build his works and which he offers us, and how the spectator should contemplate the existing images. The artist lets himself flow and wants to highlight the complex, existing world in this series Between the Visible and the Invisible. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Vasili Kandinsky said: The artist ought to have something to say because his duty is not to dominate the form but to make it adequate to its contents. The artist is not that privileged in life, he does not have the right to live without duties, he is obligated to do a tedious job which sometimes becomes his cross, and winds up recognizing and accepting he is not free in life, only in art1. This is a liberty, clearly present in each work and which insists upon the collaboration of he who looks at it. How? By observing it attentively. Observation is to participate in the creative process because the true work 1 KAndinsky, W. (2011) De lo espiritual en el arte. Barcelona: Paidós. 101 of art takes on its own life and becomes an independent subject as it is contemplated and interiorized by the viewer. That is why the one who feels the art as a territory of personal experience, as a lookout tower of the time that we have lived, must definitely see this exhibition. It is quite passionate, following the path of creative activity which is a signature of all of Paco Lara-Barranco’s work. Something that has been felt since the 1980s, on two basic ideas. First: the works should be as autonomous as possible from the author’s own decisions and second: the productions should be connected to the natural course of life. This, in a world of beautiful color, con the trick of hiding layers of paint which does not end up revealing itself easily, forced the viewer to follow the wonderful thread of Ariadna searching for the minitour creator in the artist’s always surprising labyrinth. And within the labyrinth we can find the strength of creation. Each work speaks, interrogates, confronts, demands that the spectator who interiorizes the painting completes the creative process. With Paco Lara-Barranco, the theory which results in his carrying out his painting opens us up to the concept and the color in such a way that it acquires almost a mathematical significance. There are lines, points, curves, but overall there is material. A material that takes up a great amount of space and a space which takes up a great amount of time to be made from oil-based paint, spray paint, watercolors, graphite, colored pencils, working on a canvas, wood, linen, according to the demands of each circumstance and open to unconventional formats, not being rectangular or square. The artist says that broaching a painting, partially covering up that which exists is a way to investigate the mystery from which each painting surges as well as a way of questioning oneself and opening oneself to the past. A very present idea, highly emphasized by the author, who considers creating a painting is creating a world and creating a world is leaving space to time, to chance and overall to the ingenuity of finding, at each moment, answers in how the coming together of that which is invisible from that which is so evidently visible. What is of note on this occasion is the way of hiding the layers. The artist makes use of parallel sections originating weaves made of latticework that in the end create a mystery when it opens up to chance and the passage of time. This is something very personal and very interesting. In 102 this construction of space, as we indicated above, a world of color stands out, made with great rigor and an extraordinary result. We know that color is an ally of light and that both originate an atmosphere created from forms and spaces to individualize each painting. Some have been made with black strokes crossed with green and yellow and reinforced with white and grey lines immersed in tones of all colors. Primary and secondary, warm and cold, eccentric and concentric. The game of a lifetime spilled over the various surfaces, daring us to describe ample layers hidden among the sections of latticework. In each painting the light reaches a mythical dimension; the painting a sacred dimension. But one must immerse himself in it. The artist risks himself with blues, risks himself with greens, risks himself with reds. More white and grey lines, fields of olive groves, rivers, roads to follow for the journey. Images of fences, cacti, landscapes, clouds, an immersion of color. Fish, dolls, birds, leaves in the wind. Lambda for thermal conductivity, alpha for beginning, more of the Greek alphabet. In the last few weeks, the lightest, the difference floating and taking up space, emerging differently: surprising. A unique sensitivity for composition and colors and the more important: the discovery of the authentic poet presenting his best poetry. Exhibition catalogue.) “Change your mind mind mind mind mind mind mind mind mind mind mind mind mind mind mind as often as you change your shirt” 110 “The artist is slightly away from the artwork. He cast a glance over the model; it may need a final brushstroke, or maybe it’s the first one that is still missing […] The dark waist, halfway between visible and invisible: arising from a fleeing canvas, it emerges under our eyes; but when he moves one step to the right, hidden to us, he will be placed right opposite the canvas being painted; he will penetrate in that region in which his painting, neglected for an instant, is going to be visible to him, without shadows nor reluctancies. As if the artist could not be seen at the same time over the painting in which is represented and that one in which he undertakes the task of representing something. It reigns in the threshold of these incompatible visibilities”. I went on investigating the idea that paintings are above all paintings. Having their own autonomy. Chance and game are essential in the way of translating paintings to the canvas surface during the manufacturing process Chance and game. — The chance and the game. — Chance and game: when changing an idea is as easy as changing your shirt. — Chance and game: because I don’t know what will be. — Chance and game: because I’ll never know what is going to be. — Chance and game: because I’ll never what is going to happen on the surface of the canvas. (21/11/2020) Any decision opens a different exploratory path. This is why art is so difficult and so easy at the same time. If you know what the painting is saying, then is easy. You allow yourself to be surprised by the brushstroke. Make it autonomous. It is intrinsically valued. Facing its autonomy leaves you motionless. For seconds. Both the upcoming brushstroke that ignores the line previously drawn either by the graphite or color pencil, that turns out to be very precise, and the other one, sloppier, undefined, erasing another line, even spattering the area, are equally important. And they get the same recognition. If you look closely, they add value to the ensemble. “Brushstroke” must be understood as an expression that materializes an Michel Foucault, “Las meninas” in Las palabas y las cosas. Ciudad de México: Siglo xxi, p. 21. 111 action. It’s the shape acquired by the matter, the color, as it takes up space within the painted surface. Sometimes good things in paintings are veiled. Something will be hidden, its contemplation denied forever. Even though you know it’s our there, hidden. Game background-figure. — Here, the “figure” must be understood as ageometric or abstract shape, as a result of any action laid out on the surface. A line is a shape, so is a dot with its roundness; a paint drag, a transparent or color solid puddle also generate shapes that are a priori not controlled by the author. — Surface painting rather than of “relational” character, were correspondence among parts as target. Randomness is valuable because of its unpredictable action on the painting. CHANCE AND GAME, OR CHANGING AN IDEA AS CHANGING A SHIRT. Paintings have become… — A slow painting process, asking for 112 time, time and more time. — A slow painting process, asking you to feel the time passing by, every second. — Listening to the dragging noise of the brush. — Look, contemplate the brush trip trying to get close, without trespassing on it, to the previously drawn either by graphite or color pencil. The painting being observed… — Speaks about painting with its own identiy. — Claims the game, randomness and the painting itself — Claims for experimentation. — Insists upon experimentation. — It’s created [the painting] with no particular end. — Color plays a principal role. — For sure, painting takes its own lead. — The method streamlines with its own existence, working (and observing whatever happens around). I adopt a non-conventional format (meaning offsetting the rectangle and going deeper in paintings with shapes). I try and question the painting by half "concealing" some parts that have been added on the top layers, during the first-work sessions. By means of parallel strips, diagonally crossed both ways frames appear as lattices would, then I draw a linear shaped drawing, perpendicular and a diagonal line, overlapping the lattice mentioned earlier. The painting consists of layers, —time layers. Actually, the construction of the painting takes a long time. It takes me months, even years. Paintings are built simultaneously. This way each painting absorbs from others. The painting that comes next, in a certain way, some of the findings in the lastest series — Completing drawing (2018) (available at https:// pacolara.es). I insist in the interferences — referring to what is hidden and what is perceivable. The entrire range of superpositions — from layers that interfere which interfere with the above — impede the spectator from being about to contemplate that which is beyond the uppermost layer of paint, from the last layer which is the closest to the viewer. When zones are forever hidden, and others remain partially visible in the development of a typology of works which are autonomous to the decisions of the author — this is like that because, really, the entire process of the painting is uncontrollable. 117 When I play with shapes — some cut out of paper others found randomly while walking —, I toss them at the background material laid out on my studio floor, I allow the painting process guides these first crutial moments in the construction of the work. The distribution of the elements, the structure, comes from randomness. The painting does not represent anything. Just the opposite, it is seen literally just the way it is: shapes and pictoral material laid over a surface that, as the same time, is the base. There are preconceived notions in that phase of the pictoral process. This way of proceeding is a way of making decisions. There is also another, the decision of “sewing” where a stitch is needed which allows a relation from unconnected parts. Then elements are added which organize the sintaxis of the painting. The intervention of the spectator in the creative act becomes essencial. Their role is not conditioned by “a concrete image” — which could be recognized —. Just the opposite, when facing the painting — by all which is hidden or semi-hidden — he who looks could be freed, given that he “sees” that which he wants to see. What surprised me most has been the spectacle of shapes and color which the painting itself gives off, fruit of the project Between the Visible and the Invisible. 9788409 443970
