Material from three Cyprian populations of this widespread Mediterranean annual proved to have chromosome number s of 2/1 = 44. This result corroborates reports from numerous countries cited in Oberprieler & Vogt (1993). Deviating counts made by Humphrie s & al. This is the first publication of a chromosome number for this E. Mediterranean species. The chromosomes during diakinesis and metapha se show ten bivalents as well as a ring of eight chromosomes, probably due to the existence of translocation heterozygosity. As far as we know this is the first ti me that this kind of chromosome rearrangements has been found in Carduus. Carduus pycnocephallls subsp. albidus (M. Bieb.) Kazmi 211 = 60.
